Designed to operate independently or as a unit of a force, the Ship is the cornerstone of the amphibious assault. L Helicopter Carrier m M frnt i Kt Commentary: A Newsman ' s Opinion The thing is, hehcopters are different from planes. An airplane by its nature wants to fly, and if not interfered with too strongly by unusual events or by a deliberately incompetent pilot, it will fly. A helicopter does not want to fly. It is maintained in the air by a variety of forces and controls working in opposition to each other; and if there is any disturbance in the delicate balance, the helicopter stops flying im- mediately and disastrously. There is no such thing as a gliding helicopter. This is why being a helicopter pilot is so different from being an airplane pilot, and why in general, airplane pilots are clear eyed, buoyant extroverts, and helicopter pilots are brooders, introspective anticipa- tors of trouble. They know if anything bad has not happened, it is about to. -Harry Reasoner I i Amphibious Assault Ship I Boat Pron Boat Operations: Half of the Two- Pronged Capability Hospital Ship: Largest Hospital Afloat From Surgery At Sea . . . . . . B K H P Ih k I AIMD ' s primary function is to provide support for the embarked Marine Composite Squadron and the ship ' s helo by performing intermediate level aircraft maintenance which is defined as check, test and repair of components and accessories. When the workload is broken down into facts and figures it equates to 1787 components inducted and 1271 repaired and returned to a Ready for Issue (RFI) condition; during the WESTPAC cruise we have increased our repair capabihty by 15.6%! This has enabled our supported squadron to meet 95% of its commitments. During the recent COMFAIRWESTPAC mid-cruise inspection, AIMD received a comment from the inspection team saying that BELLEAU WOOD is the best LHA LPH they have inspected in WESTPAC. We are proud to have contributed to the common goal we are all working for: to make BELLEAU WOOD and her embarked Marines the best in the Navy and the pace setter for the rest to catch ... if they can! Executive Department From day-one of the WESTPAC, Executive Department personnel worked together to perform their daily functions and added spit and polish to an already brilliant shine. Men worked in a combination of several office spaces, each having its own importance to the crew. These spaces include: Captain ' s Office, Personnel Office, Educational Services Office, Combat Cargo Office, Post Office, Comm and Career Counseling office Command Master Chief, Print Shop, Legal Office and Master-At-Arms Office. WESTPAC ' 84 was an eventful cruise for many shipmates in Executive Department. Long days and even longer nights saw many personnel turning and burning to get the work load done. Despite the workload, crewmembers still found time to enjoy each and every port visited by BELLEAU WOOD. Some highlights of the cruise included: tours of Hawaii, the night-life in Subic City, the frigid cold of Korea, shopping bargains and a wedding in Hong Kong, purchasing cassette tapes in Singapore, the exciting beaches in Thailand, the friendly people from the land down under and the intriguing culture of a modern-day Japan. WESTPAC ' 84 gave the men of Executive a chance to experience the lifestyles and cultures of many lands. A challenge of exploration set in each time the ship pulled into a new port. At times, the steaming hours between ports were long. There were times when one felt that they would never see land again, but the thoughts of home kept him going: looking forward to seeing a long awaited USA. I ' ' T LIBERTY!
