Chase Captain Henri B. (Bert) CHASE was born in Kilmarnock, Virginia. He earned his BS degree from the College of William and Mary and his MS degree from George Washington University. In 1955 Captain Chase entered OCS, receiving his commission in September of that year. Subsequently, he attended Navy Flight School and received his wings of gold in March 1957. His duties have included exchange duties with the Royal Navy at RNAS Lossiemouth, Scotland; RNAS Yovilton, England and aboard HMS EAGLE, East of Suez. Captain Chase is a graduate of the Royal Navy Fighter Weapons Schools and the British Tactical Air Strike Force Course. He has attended the Naval War College, been assigned as the Tactical Air Analyst to the Secretary of the Navy, served as the Director, Naval Aviation Safety Programs, Naval Safety Center, Norfolk, Virginia and commanded Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED FIVE, Attack Carrier Air Wing SIX, Light Attack Wing ONE and USS GUAM (LPH-9) prior to assuming command of USS BELLEAU WOOD on 24 April 1982. Captain Chase ' s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and various campaign and service medals. He is married to the former Miss Genny Clark Bowling of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Daytona Beach, Florida. LaPlante John Baptiste LaPlante was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on 6 June 1940. Following graduation from Severn School in Annapolis he attended the U.S. Naval Academy. He was commissioned in June 1962 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. His initial sea duty was in USS FOX (DD779), an Atlantic Fleet destroyer, as CIC Officer. Following a tour as a student at the U.S. Naval Destroyer School he served in two Pacific Fleet destroyers, USS SAMPLE (FF1048) as Operations Officer, and USS DUNCAN (DDR874) as Weapons Officer. In December 1968 Captain LaPlante took command of USS SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY (LST1122), homeported in Guam. SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY wasanactivated in September 1969 and Captain LaPlante ' s next assignment was as Commanding Officer of a sister ship, USS FLOYD COUNTY (LST762), homeported in San Diego. He next reported to the U.S. Naval Academy where he served in the office of the Commandant of Midshipmen. This was followed in June 1972 by a tour of the U.S. Naval War College as a student in the College of Naval Command and Staff. During the tour he earned a Master of Science Degree in International Affairs from the George Washington University. In September 1973 he returned to the Pacific Fleet as Executive Officer in USS SAN BERNARDINO (LST1189). He was then ordered to the staff of the Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, where he served as Current Operations Officer during 1975 and as Aide and Flag Lieutenant from February 1976 until February 1978. He then served as Commanding Officer in USS THOMASTON (LSD28) from May 1978 until June 1980. He reported to USS BELLEAU WOOD (LHA3) in August 1980. Captain LaPlante is married to the former Phyllis Elaine DeBartolo of Youngstown, Ohio. They have two children and reside in San Diego. 93 a! Gimber Captain Harry M.S. Gimber was born in San Diego, California. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1957 and was assigned to the USS WATTS (DD567) where he served until December 1959. Subsequently, he attended submarine school in New London, Connecticut and then was attached to USS CORSAIR (SS435) and USS TENCH (SS417) where he held a variety of billets. Captain Gimber then attended U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey for two years and received a Mechanical Engineering Degree in June 1965. Captain Gimbers next assignment was in USS BARBEL (SS580), homeported in Pearl Harbor, where he served successively as Operations Officer, Navigator, and Executive Officer. From January 1968 through May 1970 he had a tour on the Staff of Career Planning Board, Bureau of Naval Personnel. Following a brief period as a COMSUBPAC Command Center Watch Officer he returned to sea in April 1971 as Commanding Officer of USS BLUEBACK (SS581). In July 1973, he began a three year assignment in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, first as an assistant to the Chief of Naval Personnel and then as Head of the Washington Placement Branch in the Officer Distribution Division. From December 1976 to April 1979 he served as Executive Officer, USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC19). His next assignment was Plans Officer for the Commander THIRD Fleet in Hawaii. Following the Senior Officer Ship Material Readiness Course in Idaho, Captain Gimber assumed command of USS OGDEN (LPD5) in Nove mber 1980 in Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines. He relinquished command in August 1982. Captain Gimber assumed command of COMPHIBRON FIVE, 7 September 1982 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Captain Gimber ' s decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with bronze star, Navy Achievement Medal and various unit and service awards. Captain Gimber is married to the former Maxine Reynolds of Bellingham, Washington. (Oh please, let there be) There are times when even a bulk mail advertisement would suffice to lift my dragging spirits because at least, my name is on it and I haven ' t been totally forgotten. Sometimes when days have stretched to weeks with no mail ... no word from the outside world (is anybody there?) . . . I ' d give my paycheck for one personal note that tells me someone knows I ' m here and cares enough to share. Whoever it was that said that mail is a big factor of morale . . . has got that right! Only those who have been so isolated and cut off from loved ones . . . really know the full impact of that reality. Thanks for trying to cheer me up but no, I don ' t want to share your hometown newspaper ... I want my own . . . my own paper, my own special care package, my own letter from . . . whoever!
