The operation of the machine shop, which manu- factures items for the entire eng dept, such as valve stems, gears, bushings and just about any item the ship may need fwithin reasonj to keep operating, is the responsibility of the Machinery Repairmen. While tending these boilers, the BT'S are helping to make steam to run the engines, evaporators, laundny, galley and even the ship,s whistle. But of course, where there's fire there,s soot, S0 what they can't remove and place on BUSSEY'S deck by blow- ing tubes, the BT's scrape off by hand every 600 hours.
