These Gunner's Mates are responsible for the efficient operation and maintenance of the ship's guns. The task of inspecting, testing, re- pairing and replacing is a tedious and never ending one: but when the time comes to shoot and the com- mand Commence Firew is given, all the hard work and greasy hands are forgotten in the pride of watching the swerving projectiles rush out to meet the target. Such is the life of a Gunner,s Mate, and Third Division on the USS BELLE GROVE. We came, we saw, we shot .... The maintenance of installed auxiliary machinery and equipment such as the port and starboard cranes, boat engines, steering gear, steam heating system, refrigeration equipment and last but not least, our pet, the ship's whistle. The operation of the machine shop, which manu- factures items for the entire eng dept, such as valve stems, gears, bushings and just about any item the ship may need fwithin reasonj to keep operating, is the responsibility of the Machinery Repairmen.
