America's next ten years can be the richest, most rewarding
years in all history. You, whose pictures appear in this book can
and must have a part in making this an actuality.
No one can foretell the future. We may run into disasters and
complications at home and abroad. But one sure guide for all of us
is to take a sober measure of our own strength. We are by long
I odds the richest most productive nation in human history how
fo-'A' ever some Americans still haven t enough to eat or to wear or a
house fit to live in or proper schooling or medical care
According to experts if we could but step up our output
one tenth above what we might normally expect we could produce
enough in Amenca to abolish want and hunger and bnng every
human being up to minimum living standards or above My hope is
that you young folk our present inmates can help Amerlc
achieve this highly desirable goal
To the Students of Belle Fourche High School
The desire to learn is the first requisite of success Granting
the existence of this desire the next necessity is the proper tool
with which to do the work in the best possible manner Education
can be this proper tool Schooling learning and formal training all
go to help develop the individual to better adjust his living and life
to the accepted pattern of society
lf we should so imprison our minds to new developments and
worthy activities we imprison ourselves to progress and advance
ment Through education we may release ourselves from such im
pnsonment Two qualities of our personal living should be foremost
in our daily development Character and Reputation Character is
what a person is Reputation is what others think he is
lt is well to remember what a poet once said
At learning s fountain it is sweet to dnnk
But tis a nobler privilege to think
