America's next ten years can be the richest, most rewarding
years in all history. You, whose pictures appear in this book can
and must have a part in making this an actuality.
No one can foretell the future. We may run into disasters and
complications at home and abroad. But one sure guide for all of us
is to take a sober measure of our own strength. We are by long
I odds the richest most productive nation in human history how
fo-'A' ever some Americans still haven t enough to eat or to wear or a
house fit to live in or proper schooling or medical care
According to experts if we could but step up our output
one tenth above what we might normally expect we could produce
enough in Amenca to abolish want and hunger and bnng every
human being up to minimum living standards or above My hope is
that you young folk our present inmates can help Amerlc
achieve this highly desirable goal
To the Students of Belle Fourche High School
The desire to learn is the first requisite of success Granting
the existence of this desire the next necessity is the proper tool
with which to do the work in the best possible manner Education
can be this proper tool Schooling learning and formal training all
go to help develop the individual to better adjust his living and life
to the accepted pattern of society
lf we should so imprison our minds to new developments and
worthy activities we imprison ourselves to progress and advance
ment Through education we may release ourselves from such im
pnsonment Two qualities of our personal living should be foremost
in our daily development Character and Reputation Character is
what a person is Reputation is what others think he is
lt is well to remember what a poet once said
At learning s fountain it is sweet to dnnk
But tis a nobler privilege to think

HISTORY
The senior "inmates" are receiving their parole after twelve years of hard labor, but we are just
beginning our life's journey. We feel that a commendable record has been left of our four years of high
school and that an even greater one will be made by us in the coming years.
The class of 1950 began their school career in 1938, with twenty-three out of our graduates starting
school and continuing all twelve hears here. These long-termers include: Arbuckle, Barbour, Brown,
Doody, Durr, Edmondson, Highsaw, Kissick, Long, Matson, McCullough, O'Donnell, Pridgeon, Schnitger,
Shay, Sigman, Smith, Stephens, Thomas, Tope, Willert, Wilson, and Zimmerman.
As freshmen we were the last class to be initiated -in a completely undignified fashion, including
gunny sack dresses, gym shoes, girl's shorts, and gunny sack hair. The registration of several rural stu-
dents, most of whom are graduating here, made a welcome addition to our class. Our first year in high
school, we elected Larry Ross, president.
ln our sophomore year, we made tl1e "B" which, to our delight, burned with the first match. That
year we broke the hoax on school dances by giving a"whalloping good" one. Selling candy and gum in the
halls was also a successful venture.
Our junior year we were put to hard labor! Selling hot dogs, coffee, candy, and pop at football
games involved a lot of headaches and work but we profited considerably well. In order to earn money
for the prom and banquet, we went to work selling magazines, breaking all previous records by top-
ping the S1500 mark.

Another success was chalked up when the class play, "Granddad Steps Out," was presented. A re-
peat performance was given a week later for hospital benefit.
Weeks of toil resulted in our "Southland" banquet and prom, put on for the seniors. The gym was
transformed into a huge country garden with a southern mansion dominating one end.
We helped with baccalaureate and commencement, anxious to take our place as seniors.
At last the big year arrived! WE were SENIORS! Upperclassmenl
We elected and crowned Doris Pridgeon as Bronc Day queen and Paul Pluimer as marshal in impres-
sive Bronc Day festivities.
Then we woke up - the annual was to be published by us this year!! So we went to work on it, in-
cluding an all-school minstrel sponsored in order to gain pictures for the yearbook.
The seniors took over the city for a day with Ron Wilson as mayor. A gay time was had by all and
now we feel we are capable of running our fair city.
Sophisticated seniors really lived up to the name when they had dress-up day.
University tests showed us how much we hadn't learned yet.
The juniors put on a lovely banquet and prom for us.
Sunday evening, May 2l, an impressive baccalaureate service was held in our honor.
We received our parole papers on May 25 which ended twelve long, hard, but fun-packed, years.
