Mcllonnell. has added seven more here at llellarmine High School. No amount ot' 'book learning can replace experience: experience is the best teacher. And we, the class ot' ltttilt. have been the fortunate recipients of the academic wisdom garnered by Father these past twenty-six years. as through four years we were guided by the usual force and vigor that he gave in directing his students toward academic excellence: an arduous task for any man, no matter how experienced. In an age of moral, mental and physical breakdown. brought upon us by a materialistic sensate culture that can onlv rear etteminate. degenerate. ephemeral. undisciplined. irresponsible offspring, Father has kept faith with the almost forgotten proverb: as the twig is bent so grows the tree, Whether it was a scissor applied to a prim haircut befitting a girl rather than a boy. or a ruler applied to a less-than-sixteen-inch trouser cuff smacking of the offebeat culture of a modern sophisticate. or a schedule emphasizing Physics rather than Physical Ed.. or the insistance that llellarmine was primarily a school and not a social hall. nor an athletic club. nor even a Church - all was a constant. never- ending insistence on excellence: the twig must grow straight, the tree must be Jerfect and strong, the boy must become a MAN, a well-educated, God-fearing, God-loving, gentleman. With gratitude then, which experience surely will deepen, we dedicate this addition of 'l'Hl'l CAGE to him.
