T Ca ge 1963 BELLARMINE HIGH SCHOOL Tacoma, Washington DEDICATION 'l'o his nineteen years of experience as Principal at Seattle Prep, Fr. Christopher J. Mcllonnell. has added seven more here at llellarmine High School. No amount ot' 'book learning can replace experience: experience is the best teacher. And we, the class ot' ltttilt. have been the fortunate recipients of the academic wisdom garnered by Father these past twenty-six years. as through four years we were guided by the usual force and vigor that he gave in directing his students toward academic excellence: an arduous task for any man, no matter how experienced. In an age of moral, mental and physical breakdown. brought upon us by a materialistic sensate culture that can onlv rear etteminate. degenerate. ephemeral. undisciplined. irresponsible offspring, Father has kept faith with the almost forgotten proverb: as the twig is bent so grows the tree, Whether it was a scissor applied to a prim haircut befitting a girl rather than a boy. or a ruler applied to a less-than-sixteen-inch trouser cuff smacking of the offebeat culture of a modern sophisticate. or a schedule emphasizing Physics rather than Physical Ed.. or the insistance that llellarmine was primarily a school and not a social hall. nor an athletic club. nor even a Church - all was a constant. never- ending insistence on excellence: the twig must grow straight, the tree must be Jerfect and strong, the boy must become a MAN, a well-educated, God-fearing, God-loving, gentleman. With gratitude then, which experience surely will deepen, we dedicate this addition of 'l'Hl'l CAGE to him. VERY REV. JOSEPH l'. LOGAN, bJ President Religion 4 Philomathca K Booster Clubs FR. LEON P. The Irish ended a four-year famine with their resounding and rough victory over the Lions. The Lions escaped a shutout thanks to a short punt in the 4th quarter. The Bells took the ball on the Irish 25 and tallied when Ralph Riden, promising Sopho- more, threw a 5-yard pass to John Matz. Joe Lynn put in the night's top defensive effort. Luckless Pat Larkin also was commended. As it turned out, Larkin played most of the game with 'a broken wrist, and this lightweight, fleet-footed All-City-Halfback-hopeful saw his High School football career abruptly ended, two years in a row now was his speed lost to the squad for most of the season. The Lions had two TDs called back be- cause of penalties, also they were stopped on the O'Dea five early in the game when a 4th down pass into the end zone went incomplete. STADIUM 20 - LIONS 6. Despite the score, the game was a closely fought con- test. The Lions' scoring drive in the 2nd period was set up by a poor punt which travelled only 10 yards before going out of bounds at the Bells, 38. On the 3rd play Mackay threw to Joe Lynn in the right flat. The fleet Junior cut to his left and outraced the defense 53 yards until he was caught at the 7. Mackay then flipped a jump pass to Matz for the TD. Halfback Joe Lynn was a stand- out both offensively and defensively for the Lions. SEATTLE PREP 14-LIONS 6. Pat Kennedy intercepted a Prep pass late in the first half to set up the Lions' score. An 11-yard aerial from Riden to Tomko and a 12-yard run by Joe Lynn off right tackle were the big gainers in this drive. Mike Mayer ran the ball over the one to score. LIONS 19-BLANCHET 13. The Lions, out for their first win of the season, up- set the Blanchet Braves in the trans- planted homecoming game , postponed from the night of the Hurricane winds, Oct. 12, to the afternoon of the 13th. After spotting the Braves a 6-0 lead in the first period, the Bells marched 78 yards for the tying TD. John Matz, who netted 101 yards in 19 attempts and thus became the newest member in the ex- clusive 100-Yard Club , crashed into the end zone from the Blanchet 8. Steve Kneeshaw kicked the go-ahead point. In the third period Mel Mackay connected with end Dick Tomko with two tosses for 52 yards, Mayer hit the end zone from the one. After the Braves tied it up in the 4th, Mayer intercepted a pass late in the game on the Blanchet 49. He and Matz advanced the ball to the 11, from where Mackay found Mayer all alone on a double-slot pass pattern and flipped the winning aerial to Mike in the last 15 seconds of the game. VICTORY! LINCOLN 40-LIONS 0. Lincoln, No. 1 in the state AP poll, promptly polished off the Lions for their 4th straight win of the season and the 100th win for Norm Mayer as coach at Lincoln. The Lions made only 5 first downs and netted 56 yards rushing, 27 yards passing. E. BREMERTON 24 - LIONS 12. The score was even, 12-all, going late into the 4th quarter, but a fumble gave the Knights the break for the winning TD, and an intercepted desperation pass ad- ded the clincher soon after. Behind by 12 points at the half, the Bells took the kickoff and rang up a score on a 60-yard drive spurred on by a great 30-yard ef- fort by Joe Lynn into pay dirt. Early in the 4th quarter the Lions went 85 yards in 11 plays-a 16-yard run by Mayer, a 10-yard pass from Mackay to Duren kept the movement alive-with Matz bulling over for what was then the tying TD. WILSON 27-LIONS 0. The Lions, the City league's most successful team thru the air so far, had their air attack bottled up by the Rams a-nd were able to hit only four out of 18 passes for a meager 29 yards. John Matz with 83 yards in 18 trips proved to be our biggest ground gainer. LIONS 20-MT. TAHOMA 0. Once again, VICTORY! Very early in the game, on a 4th and 7 situation, Mike Mayer took a hand-off from Lynn to notch the Ist tally 16 yards out. Mack- ay's pass to Tomko was good for the PAT. In the 2nd period, the Lions drove 69 yards for the second TD, Riden diving over from the 2. The last-score, in the 4th, showed some fancy tricks by the Bells. Ruffo took the snap from center and handed the ball to Lynn. Lynn shoved the ball to Mayer who lateralled back to Ruffo. Gary, now out in the flank, zipped a 50-yard pass to Tim Duren who went over to score. Mackay's pass was good, again to Duren, for the PAT. 5 t in 5 xx fn 9 Q if Y' ' ' 562, ,76m51f!, Xx77A2 5M13W gow? ' UL. In the first contest of the even- ing, Lincoln defeated Mt. Tahoma 21-13, and in the second Wilson routed Stadium 22-8. Beliarmine then defeated Lincoln 16-13 to go into the finals. The Lions took an early 8-4 lead and held off two Abe at- tacks to post their first victory. Bill Wynkoop had seven points and Dick Anstett had five. The Wilson game could be termed the real cliff-hanger of the night. Bellarmine again took an early lead and remained comfortably ahead until early in the second period when a Ram surge led by forward Cary Birchier narrowed the lead to 26-24. The Lions, however, showing amaz- ing accuracy at the free-throw line held their own and finally sewed it up on Anstett's conversion of a free throw shot with 40 seconds remain- ing. Wilson almost ruined the Lion victory when, with 11 seconds remain- ing, the Rams stole the ball, but a shot by Jeff Hale rolled out, and the Bells got the rebound. The final score was 34-33- Anstett had 12 points and Jack Banz had 9. Ron Urquhart, Bellarmine's new hoop coach, was carried on the shoul- ders of players and fans alike to the center of the floor where he re- ceived the coveted trophy. 052 f 1 fy' N5 I ,. 5 in gsiyr 1 Q .v, , 5-78,0 2. .
