Many Juniors took part in some extra-curricular actixity during l949-50. ln sports several received varsity awards, In every school activity and organization there was at least one junior on the roster. So rhomores They came timidly up the hill in September, l948. looking tere ribly small and scared, and giving promise of nothing better than getting under everybody's feet, which they did, They came back again in September, l949, some a good half foot taller, and all of them a great deal wiser with the experience of a year on the hill. Immediately they turned up everywhere'-in sports, in the various clubs. and in dramatic productions, Not in the back seats, either, but often in important positions and occasion- ally in top places. There were sophomores doing great work on the debate team1 sophomores starred in the operetta, and their blackened faces sang out in rows at the Minstrel show: the soph basketball team fought its way to city championship, and two members of this class stepped into editorial positions on the school paper. ln addition to all this, the second-year men maintain an enviable scholastic record, thus proving that school activities should not and need not crowd out the books. Freshnwn During eight strife ridden years, the one consolation embedded in the very soul of a student is that he might enter, at last, after graduation from the grades, into the vast domain of a high school. Then that first year, as all first years, fills the class with great enthus iasm and ambition for school activities Why? Because the Frosh feel separated and uncertain of their steps in this new life, and each has the desire to be. as they say, one of the boys Later in the year we find the glowing anxiety lulled and replaced by a sophisticated Hknowfit-all attitude. The atomic age has brought a new kind of class to Bellarmine4Tl-lE ATOMIC FROSHfffull of the same kind of boundless energy that character- izes the age They have already shown that energy in a willingness to dig in and contribute to the well-being of their school, and they give promise of touching off a blast of school spirit such as has rarelyibeen seen. Those words, which have thrilled Bellarmine thespians for twenty-two years. sent them out before the footlights on three separate occasions this year. It was January Thaw last winter, when William Roos' rib-tickling three- act comedy was staged in the Temple Theater. The combined cast of Bellarmine High and Aquinas Academy students gave a matinee and an evening performance on December l9, Mr. Michael Taylor, S.J., directed the play. ln this play John Callucci portrayed Herbert Cage, an author, and Donna Hess took the part of Marge, his wife. The sudden appearance of a supposedly dead country couple, Jonathan and Mathilda Rockwood, enacted by Jim Harrison and Betty Jean Plaquet, led to a gay dramatic adventure. Others in the cast were Suzanne Sheridan as Barbara Cage, Tom Koehler as Matt Rockwood, Tom Thompson as George Husted, Joann Lehman as Sarah Cage, Marilyn Thailen as Paula Cage, Roger Blanchette as Uncle Walter, Mike Mirign as Mr, Loomis Sue Backer as Frieda, and Dan Burrows as Carson, On the evenings of February l9, 20, and 2l, teeth flashed in thirty blackened laces when the curtain rose on the Booster Minstrel show at St. Leo's. Some spirited songs from this group and some fast' stepping on, the part of Terry and Tom Coleman, Jimmy Ray, Ron Jutilla, Tom Conley, Rick Bader, Bill Doonan, and John Kirk, all went to make a rousing background for the Boosters' acts. A special instrumental trio on this occasion consisted of Johnny Bartenetti, Ed Knuckey, and Joe Callucci Fiesta time was in order when Bellarmine and St. Leo's went Spanish in their annual spring musical, The Spanish 3elli,-, which was presented in St. Leo's Auditorium April 30, vlay I, and May 2. S.J., the new diamond coach, called the initial baseball practice on March 6. Forming the nucleus tor the year's squad were returning lettermen Don Martelli, Jim C-allwas, Charles Bott, and Del Michaelson. At first, furnouts were somewhat dampened by old Jupe Pluvius. but the weather warmed up true to form, and the Lions had some good sessions Surviving the cut were pitchers Charles Bott, Joe Seeberger, Don Riche, and Jim C-allwas. Don Martelli. Sid Baunsgard, Dick l-leltsley. Bob Froehler. and Jim Jolibois were outtielders. while Joe Karpach. Bill Ciallwas. Del Michaelson, Bill Kershul, Mike Strong. Ash White, and Ralph Cuelfi made up the infield. Jim Callwas was elected captain by his teammates. Unfortunately, the Cage went to press too early in the season to give any game results. All difficulties notwithstanding, his thinclads turned out every night, rain or shine, on the CPS. cinders. Carrying the brunt of the burden on this year's team were Tom Koehler, half-milerg Mel Woodke, milerg Nick Beretich, shotputg and Les I-laniger, hurdles. These were the only returning lettermen.
