Our Distinguished Herifage I I Alexander Graham Bell Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the year 1847. His family moved to Brantford, Ontario, in 1870. Bell's proficiency as a teacher of the deaf brought him to Boston, where he established a reputation as an authority on methods and techniques in this field. An early interest in the use of electricity in the transmission of sound led to experiments which culminated in his most famous invention, the telephone in 1873. During the seventy-five years of his life, Bell carved out a remarkable career. In addition to the telephone and his work with the deaf, he pioneered in many fields. He became tremendously interested in aviation, foresaw its importance, and did much to further its progress. He carried on constructive studies in eugenics, transmitted sound over a beam of light, developed the basic mthod of making phonograph records on wax discs, and perfected an electrical surgical probe. His mind was ever inquiring, and the range of his interests wide. Bell became a resident of Washington, D. C., in 1876, and a United States citizen in 1882. He served as president of the National Geographic Society and as a member of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institute. He established locally the Volta-Laboratory where he and others continued research on the education of the deaf. Here he also invented the audiometer. Bell spent much of his later life in Canada where he died on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, on August 2, 1922.

Our lives are three-dimensional. As we mature we gain a depth of knowledge, a breadth of aspiration. Many elements combine to devel- op the student into an adult with these dimen- sions. The rhyzbm of the school days ser by the teachers who guide us, the empharir placed Foreword upon the seniors to prepare for graduation, the variety found among the students and in classes, the unity of teamwork in sports and of the stu- dents who back them, and the balance between the social and the academic life which is at- tained in school activities--all merge to create the composition or whole of the high school student. Widi this background of knowledge, expen- ence, and aspiration gained during our high school years, we are prepared to search for new dimen- sions,THE DIMENSIONS FOR TOMORROW.
