As we mature we gain a depth of knowledge, a breadth of aspiration. Many elements combine to devel- op the student into an adult with these dimen- sions. The rhyzbm of the school days ser by the teachers who guide us, the empharir placed Foreword upon the seniors to prepare for graduation, the variety found among the students and in classes, the unity of teamwork in sports and of the stu- dents who back them, and the balance between the social and the academic life which is at- tained in school activities--all merge to create the composition or whole of the high school student. Widi this background of knowledge, expen- ence, and aspiration gained during our high school years, we are prepared to search for new dimen- sions,THE DIMENSIONS FOR TOMORROW. Enfor fo Loom Depart fo Serve Our Distinguished Herifage I I Alexander Graham Bell Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the year 1847. His family moved to Brantford, Ontario, in 1870. Bell's proficiency as a teacher of the deaf brought him to Boston, where he established a reputation as an authority on methods and techniques in this field. An early interest in the use of electricity in the transmission of sound led to experiments which culminated in his most famous invention, the telephone in 1873. During the seventy-five years of his life, Bell carved out a remarkable career. In addition to the telephone and his work with the deaf, he pioneered in many fields. He became tremendously interested in aviation, foresaw its importance, and did much to further its progress. He carried on constructive studies in eugenics, transmitted sound over a beam of light, developed the basic mthod of making phonograph records on wax discs, and perfected an electrical surgical probe. His mind was ever inquiring, and the range of his interests wide. Bell became a resident of Washington, D. C., in 1876, and a United States citizen in 1882. He served as president of the National Geographic Society and as a member of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institute. He established locally the Volta-Laboratory where he and others continued research on the education of the deaf. Here he also invented the audiometer. Bell spent much of his later life in Canada where he died on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, on August 2, 1922. Dedication Mr. Lemuel A. Penn In memory of the late Lemuel A. Penn, whose exceptionally brilliant career came to an end at its zenith, the Class of 1965 sincerely dedicates this, THE VOCAT. Not only was he a leader in his community, but he was also an outstanding educator and administrator in the D. C. Public Schools. Mr. Penn served as teacher at the lfhelps Vocational High School and at Veterans High School Center. He was principal at Veterans High School Center and later became principal of Phelps Vocational High School. He contributed much to the success of vocational training as Director of Vocational High Schools, the Evening Adult and Summer School Programs. As director, Mr. Penn planned for an educational program responsive to the needs of the Community. He was a man of courage, ability and integrity. He was a man to be admired. T! Baltimore PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE ENTER TO LEARN DEPART TO SERVE To the class of 1965, congratulations and best wishes for a long, prosperous and healthy -life. The faculty has attempted to give you the knowledge and skills so necessary for a young man entering the world of work, the armed services or the field of higher education. During your three years at Bell Vocational High School, you have lived as a citizen in a small community of 500 students and teachers. Many of you have served with distinction as members of the Student Council, Bell Chorus, Cadet Corps or Athletic Teams. This participation was excellent training for the day that you would graduate and become an Alumnus of Bell. How well we taught, how much pride of school, community and coun- try we instilled can be answered only by how much you continue to grow morally and mentally . . . If, when you leave us you become an alert member of your community who contributes to the continued improvement of our city and country-then, your teachers at Bell have done their job. GOOD LUCK AND GODSPEED! Our Counselor Mr. John H. Will Counselor Mr. john Williams lends n helping hand' to student Ralph Bullock. Students at Bell find ready help and answers at the counselor's desk. Here they receive individual help in under- standing themselves in respect to their interests, strengths, aptitudes and abili- ties, ns well as, their limitations. Aid is given in placing students in profitable work situations on a part time basis while attending school, as well as per- manent placement after graduation. ioms It is with a feeling of pride and satisfaction that the counselor extends congratulations to the graduating class of '65. Your class is by far the largest since the founding of Bell Vocational High School. With the emphasis today on automation, it is even more necessary that you continue your study and on-the-job-training to meet the increasing requirements of the future for skilled mechanics. I hope that each of you will achieve a greater measure of success in your chosen occupation than you ever real- ized was possible. John H. Williams Counselor ' f'e !.C ' Q-...,..5. not X. . Qualls, reading the plays of the opposition as they came out of the huddles, was the key to the Bell defense that allowed its opponents an average of a field goal per game. With his quick football mind and fast reactions, he often bodily moved his mates in position just before the ball was snapped. During the season, Qualls recovered four fumbles from his linebacking position and got the big one which set up Bells only touchdown in a 7-6 squeaker decision over tough league rival, Roosevelt High. Qualls is surprisingly quiet, unassuming, almost bashful, off the gridiron. His good character and leadership abilities are unquestioned. As an offensive center, Qualls doesn't know the meaning of a bad snap, never experiencing one in almost 600 times of handling the ball.
