K. Kowalski LCDR The Supply Department is support. Its success is chiefly measured by the ability of other departments to perform their missions. In the area of material support, a simple look at the myriad of machinery and electronic equip- ment aboard BELKNAP shows just how monumental the task of effective support is. Processing an average of 700 requisitions each month, the Storekeepers must insure that each is accurate and that the usage data is properly recorded for determination of stock replenish- ment and future demands. A wrong number on a requisition, or a failure to accurately project usage, can mean the difference between up and down for the ship's systems. Schuck LT Regardless of what the ship may be doing, underway or inport, one requirement never changes. The crew must be fed. The Com- missarymen and Food servicemen see to it that, whatever the circumstances, the crew can count on three lor fourl wholesome, appetizing meals a day. Due to their extra effort and skill, Chow time has always meant more to the crew of BELKNAP than just a full stomach. The Ship's Service division is tasked with providing the crew with essential services and lux- uries which ease the inconvenience of living aboard a ship at sea. The laundry is in operation 24 hours a day to provide service to 400 customers who are a source of the most challenging assort- ment of dirt and grime going. Although the barber's chair is as forboding to some as the den- tist's, the ship's Barbers managed to give some 4,- 500 professional-looking haircuts during the cruise. The Ship's Store was one of the few places on board where one could get away from it all. During the cruise BELKNAP's department store afloat sold approximately S120,000 in merchan- dise, from 5ct Tootsie Rolls to S5576 tape decks. The Welfare and Rec Fund was kept fat by the coke machine, the original four buttoned bandit. One team in the department reported a dis- tinct boost in their popularity twice each month - around the 15th and 30th. When deployed, the functions of the Disbursing Office expand con- siderably, with foreign currency sales, bill paying, and allotment changes galore! Yet, the DK's managed, with efficiency and accuracy, nearly 5600,000 in disbursements during the cruise, in- cluding a well-deserved pay raise. Throughout the cruise, the Stewards provid- ed the officers with appetizing meals, upkeep of spaces, and those personal services which allowed the officers more time to attend to their duties. Expertise and ingenuity were the words as the Stewards added special touches such as potato flowers on the many occasions that BELKNAP hosted foreign visitors and dignitaries. The cruise for Supply? A challenge and hard work.
