We represented the U.S. Navy at the 125th anniversary celebration of C.iardini's Patron Saint Maria S.S. Raccomandata. The celebration and the town's hospitable atmosphere provid- ed a refreshing break from the rigors of being at sea We announced our arrival at C-iardini with a 21 gun National Salute The city s warm acceptance of BELKNAP'S crew was returned during the luncheons and guided tours con ducted on board for several town officials and citizens The most distinguished guest of the ship was His Eminence Francesco Cardinal Carpino, who spoke briefly with Catholic crew members while on board Our stayin Giardlnl was made more colorful by a fireworks display A tour of nearby Mt Etna an active v0lCar10 was made by some of the crew It was with sadness in our hearts that we departed For Giardini was special . . . . , iiiii ' is at r we a S aasvv
