BELKNAP's visits to Sasebo in mid-December and Yokosuka, some five weeks later, offered all hands an ample oppor- tunity to observe the extent of this process first hand. As the following pages clearly show, the visit to Yokosuka provided the opportunity to visit Tokyo, Mt. Fugi ,the Great Buddha and other sights where the natural beauty and symbols of traditional Japanese culture could be seen and enjoyed.
