BaTTLEGROUP 60.3. Cruiser Destroyer Group Two Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Group TWO, homeported in Charleston, SC, is responsible, under Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, for the training, readiness and material condition of two guided missile cruisers, twenty-six destroyers and frigates and one destroyer tender. Additionally, he is the local representative of the Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Group TWO is also assigned as a seagoing Task Group Commander under Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and Commander, SECOND Fleet. In that capacity, the mission of the command is to provide naval sea control and protection of shipping in the Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Group TWO acts as a Task Group Commander under Commander Striking Fleet Atlantic for operations and training as a NATO Commander. In this role, he is responsible to the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic and the Commander in Chief, Western Atlantic, for the protection of military convoys and merchant shipping in the Western Atlantic Ocean and along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard. When deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Group TWO serves as a Battle Group Commander under Commander, SIXTH Fleet. Chief of Staff Captain William R. Westerman, USN was born 25 February 1936, in Ann Arbor, Michigan and was graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1953. In November 1956 he enlisted in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program and was commissioned an Ensign and designated a Naval aviator on 3 July 1958. His first commissioned service was as a pilot in VA-83, upon completion of Flight Training with VA-44. In December 1962, Captain Westerman was assigned as the first Pilot Training Officer at VA-42 for the new Grumman A6 Intruder. He was transferred to VA-85 in January 1966 and deployed to Vietnam onboard the 55 KITTY HAWK. In April 1966 Captain Westerman was shot down over the Tonkin Gulf while flying an A6 Intruder on a combat mission. Captain Cruiser- Westerman assumed his present duty as Chief of Staff, Destroyer Group TWO in October 1982. Captain Westerman is authorized to wear the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Purple Heart, and the National Defense Service Medal. He is married to the former Anne Sugent of Nor- folk, Virginia. They have two sons, David and Scott. CAPT W. R. Westerman
