V 5, THE SENIOR CLASS BELGRADE HIGH SCHOOL PTGSCTIIS 1960 Panther Staff SEATED, left to right: Arnold Tholkes, Diana Hoffman, Marlene Rector, Ron Iverson, Bob Feddes Mary Ellen Miller. STANDING: Sharon Kalkas, Bruce Huffine, Juanita Theisen, Bonnie Hietala Mr Randall, Dorothy Sharp, Gail Creecy. Foreword We, the Panther Annual Staff, are proud to present to you our 1960 PANTHER. This book has caught glimpses here and there, so that in years to come the activities of Belgrade High School will not be dimmed and will not fade from memory. Inlater years, while turning these pages, if you should recall the many smiles, sor- rows, and dreams of '60, we shall be con- tent, knowing that we have done the thing we were called upon to do. Ron Iverson , Editor Dedication We, the seniors of 1960, proudly dedicate this annual to Mr. John F. Van- Daveer and Mr. Joseph H. Lutz, who have worked as a team during most of our high school years, striving constantly for the betterment of Belgrade High School. As we graduate, their teachings will be carried with every one of us, be- cause these men have helped us more than words can express. Working as a team, Principal VanDaveer and Superintendent Lutz have done their job, knowing that we, as young people today, will be the adults of tomorrow. To men who greatly deserve the honor, may this then be a token of our gratitude. We, the seniors, will surley never forget the great opportunity we were given in having Mr. Lutz and Mr. VanDaVeer for teachers, and most im- portant of all, for friends. SEATED: George Cook Winifred Thompson John Vickrey Guy Hanson Saperintendentis Message Depicting the true meaning of our present-day multi -purpose education in a picture story is a difficult task. Many ideals of the school and of its people must remain untold. The Belgrade High School Senior Class of 1960 has created a yearbook that does a remarkable job of telling a story that exemplifies the things of import- ance frorn the student viewpoint while at the same time preserving the tradi- tion of a high school annual. This book holds many fond memories for the students of Belgrade High School. It will become atreasured possession of each student who lived through the experiences of the 1959-60 school year. Class History Twelve years ago in the first week of September, 1948, thirty-five fresh, young, and new faces for the first time entered their second home, where they learned reading, writing, and arithmetic. Out of the original thirty-five, seventeen not-so -fresh and new faces are left to graduate. They are as follows: Ron Iverson, Dorothy Sharp, Bruce Huffine, Mary Ellen Miller, Juanita Theisen, Clifford Lincoln, Marlene Rector, Byron Carter, Diana Hoffman, Robert Feddes, Karen Watt, Ken Nelson, Karen Fechter, Larry Bright, Milton Prescott, Gail Creecy, and Ken Tonn. Our second year saw the arrival of Sharon Kalkas, Dan Lowe, Charles Root, and Arnie Krushensky. ln the third grade no new students came, but in the fourth grade we welcomed Patti Jones and Bud Satre. The next year Joyce Wegan and Dave Johnson joined us when we went upstairs in the old grade school. We had all looked up to the big kids and now we were with them. During the sixth grade Bonnie Hietala joined usg and in the eighth grade Gary Ward joined our ranks. After our junior high years the big day came - the first day of high school. The old gang was terrified, but hardly more so than the new students, Arleen Schell and Bob Noon. Freshman initiation, much to our surprise, was lots of fun and so was the Fresh- man return party. The following year we were in charge of the initiation festivities. We carried them out with the help of two new sophomores, Butch Bopp and Donn Bergen. In our junior year, two new boys, Larry Martin and Arnold Tholkes, became our classmates. They helped with our prom which was entitled Chinese Mardi Gras. GRANDAD STEPS OUT was the title of the humorous junior play we presented. When school began in the fall of 1959, every one of us did the same old things a little differently, for we couldn't help but think a little sadly, This is the last time, whenever we did them. We were joined by one new student, Jim Kurtz. Once again we put on a play, this time it was called FATHER WAS A HOUSEWIFE. lt was lots of fun and so was our sneak trip in May. It seems the time has come for us to put to use all that we have learned in these twelve years. We are anxious to leave school, but we are sad, too. Truly, we shall never forget these halls, classmates, and teachers, for the best days of our lives were spent here with them. CLASS MOTTO: The word American ends in l CAN.
