ELK GARDEN P. T, A The Elk Garden P. T„ A, was organized in i 936 BY LIrSo Charles Vv ' „ Bordurant and she became the chapter’s first president. The first school lunch PROGRAM IN THE COUNTY HAD IT ' S BEGINNING AT ElK Garden under the leadership of Mrs. Bondurant and, Through the efforts of parents and teachers, stands TODAY . Mrs. Vi alter P. Stuart was vice president at THIS time and became THE 2n D PRESIDENT OF THE CHAPTER IN September of i938 with Mrs. Garnett Smith as vice-president. During thei r term a piano was purchased for the auditorium and cement walks WERE MADE. In ApRIL OF I940MRS. SMITH TOOK OVER THE DUTIES OF PRESIDENT, FINISHING THE UNEXPIRED TERM OF Mrs. Stuart, who moved away from the com- mon ITY AT THAT TIME. !n September of the same year Mrs .Smith became PRESIDENT, WITH MrS. JOE LEANORD AS VICE-PRESIDENT. During this period much progress was made. The LUNCH ROOM FOR UNDER NOURISHED CHILDREN DEVELOPED INTO A CAFETERIA WITH ALL NECESSARY EQ,UIPMENT. Religious education was begun in the school and MANY BOOKS WERE ADDED TO THE LIBRARY, MrS, SmITH IS NO LONGER WITH US BUT HER MEMORY IS HELD SACRED AND HER influence WILL ALWAYS BE FELT IN OUR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY. In April of i 942 Mrs. Joe Leanord was elected PRESIDENT, WITH MrS. J EFF TaYLOR VICE PRESIDENT, Still sponsoring the school lunch program, rel igi ous EDUCATION AND ALL PROJECTS OF THE EARLIER YEARS, THE GROUP ALSO COOPERATED WITH THE WAR EFFORT IN EVERY POSSI BLE WAY. Mrs. CJ«ff l Taylor succeeded Mrs . Lewiard as PRESIDENT IN SEPTEMBER OF I 944. DURING THEIR TERM OF LEADERSHIP, PARTICULAR EMPHASIS WAS PLACED ON THE BEAUTIFICATION OF SCHOOL GROUNDS AND FIRST AID EQUIPMENT WAS PURCHASED,
