Elected last spring, the Highlander cheer- leaders have achieved their utmost purpose with flying colors, that is, to build school spirit. The girls, Ruth Brewer, Susan Rice, Dottie Me- Kinley, Susan Evans, Shirley Hardin, and Roxanne Means were supervised by head cheer- leader jackie Cox and their sponsor, Miss Sut- ton. Miss Sutton has served with untiring effort as an able cheerleading sponsor since Bel Air was founded in 1957. Our cheerleaders were always on hand at all sports functions not only to cheer the team on to victory, but to lead the student body. Cheerleading camp, held for the first time at Texas XVestern, contributed greatly to build this year's cheerleaders into one of the best groups in El Paso. Jackie Cox, Head Cheerleader, focuses her attention on the exciting action of the game. Cheerleaders Promote Spirit Cheerleading sponsor: Miss Jeanette Sutton cheerleaders prepare the bus whose destination was Las Cruces. r A A ,1sw,:a1z.,san . .

At the beginning of the season, Big Red showed great promise and fine ability even though the team was inexperienced. Defeating all New Mexico foes and making an impressive showing against Big Spring gave the Highlanders the nod to repeat as District Champs. A squeak past Austin and a loss to El Paso High lowered the Highlander rating. A tie to Burges lessened the Clan's chances to get into the District playoff and victories in the following games were necessary. Beating Ieff and Eastwood by substantial margins heightened the hopes of winning the East Division. Next to play Bel Air were the Indians, and a victory was mandatory for either team to enter the playoffs. The season ended as the Indians defeated the Highlanders, 13-0. Big Red did not win the District, but they exhibited a winning spirit and good sportsmanship. Players in years to come should strive for the same goals. 9 8 2 13 Trainer jim Rogers and Coaches jim Pufal, Gene Odell and Harris Cantrell are all smiles upon receiving their letter jackets
