L ' Sports occupy an important place in the curriculum at Bel Air. Those who participate in the athletic program have quite a variety of sports from which to choose: football, basketball, baseball, track, and tennis. According to talent and experience, boys may participate in varsity, B- team, or, in some cases, freshman competition. Athletic accomplishment can be very rewarding to a determined and enthusiastic boy. Out of hard work a boy may gain a knowledge of discipline, loyalty, sportsmanship, and teamwork. This knowledge is ne- cessary not only to a good athlete, but to a good citizen as well. Sports can often be rewarding financially as well as physically and morally. Boys with character, scholarship, and exceptional athletic talent are sometimes able to pursue a higher education by means of an athletic scholarship. Participation in sports builds character as well as provides an opportunity for satisfying personal achievements. Elected last spring, the Highlander cheer- leaders have achieved their utmost purpose with flying colors, that is, to build school spirit. The girls, Ruth Brewer, Susan Rice, Dottie Me- Kinley, Susan Evans, Shirley Hardin, and Roxanne Means were supervised by head cheer- leader jackie Cox and their sponsor, Miss Sut- ton. Miss Sutton has served with untiring effort as an able cheerleading sponsor since Bel Air was founded in 1957. Our cheerleaders were always on hand at all sports functions not only to cheer the team on to victory, but to lead the student body. Cheerleading camp, held for the first time at Texas XVestern, contributed greatly to build this year's cheerleaders into one of the best groups in El Paso. Jackie Cox, Head Cheerleader, focuses her attention on the exciting action of the game.
