J, .44 -yd-1 The picture above and the following article appeared in Ray Sanchez's daily column, By the Way in the El Paso Herald-Post and is reprinted by permission. Never before has a new school come into District l-AAA varsity sports with such a stir as Bel Air is creating in basketball. And the man who must get most of thecredit is a handsome young man with ice water in his veins. I-Ie's Gene Odell, former Ysleta High and Texas Western College athlete. Odell is alrnostas much fun to watch as his Highlanders. Actually, there's seldom anything to see-but that's the thing that makes Odell such a standout. Gene stood up a couple of times during the Clan's game with Ysleta High last week, and even may have muttered aword or two. Of course, Ysleta is Bel Air's biggest rival and it wasa red- hot battle. Usually, however, Gene just sits there calmly, whether the Highlanders be far ahead, far behind, or tied. Players on the bench and spectators may be on their feet screaming but one would think Gene was 100 miles away the way the tension all skims over him. Many comments have been overheard about the gent. Our correspondent who covered the Alamogordo Tournament was slightly flabbergasted. Why, the officiating was terrible and there was a lot of fouling, he says. Yet Gene never lost his composure. His team lost, yet after the game Gene went up to the winning team and offered his con- gratulations warrnly. We've seen very few good sports like him. Yet Gene is a shrewd coach. He can pick his boys and knows the game thoroughly. Combine that with his easy yet respect-demanding manner with the kids, his understanding and his coolness and it's easy to see why Bel Air foes are going to be in for rough sledding. fl Li ,. una 2 F , Q 'E' kg, gl?
