Well, let's go to the movies now, and there, behind the show, Will be ,Iohn Blackiston, the man who makes the movies go, But letis look at the screen now, and what's the attraction there? Itis Walter Wilson, the hero, with his shining and smooth blond haf And who is the beautiful heroine? An actress of national fame, I-t's Louise Scarff, the May Queen, who has mad-e for herself a nan And the dark, handsome villain, a-twirling his polished and pointed Can be only Adrian St. John, with his usual boldness and dash. The singers fthis is a musical comedy we have gone to seel Are Grace Bailey and Lillian Louch, as pretty as they can beg ir es, Y a Air lr. 7 IC. mustache- And there, the skillful dancer, who taps with motion scarce seenl-? That's Alma Lowe, another star of the glamorous silver screen. Two other friends of '38 we find in Hollywood, too, But they don't act in pictures, as these other people dog Ernestine Ross is the secretary of Cecil B. DeMille, And, working for Robert Taylor, Alma Bachman gets a thri ll. Well, where, oh, where can the rest of '38's secretaries be? V i In Governor Robert Hess's ollice, Evelyn Walls we seeg Ruth McCormick is taking notes from a general tall and lankg And Martha Clark is typing for the president of a bank. fWhat bank? Well, you can guess at that, perhaps you'll have some fun, But Wylie Hopkins is the man for whom the typing's done. Letls look at the daily paper, Here isn't what we sought, DICK HOUSER PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE, IS NOT YET CAUGHTN- line 3 Lorene Ioines wrote the gripping story beneath this appalling And here is one by Mildred Duff: EXPLOSION IN A MINE , If anyone sees the advertisements, I want that! he wails, For Hannah Hirsch has drawn the pictures, do they get the sales! EL ADIOS, I938 . . . Prophecy To see the fate of ,38, we need to move about, On magic carpet travel far, and fast go in and out, Let's sail away on some clear day, at any time far hence, 0'er fields Weill fly through azure sky, and whisk through forests dense, Weill soon be whirled throughout the world, see lak-e and hill and dell, So let's ascend and hands extend to earth in fond farewell. The air is filled with zooming craft designed by Clemens Gaines, While, on the ground, itis Robert Harkins who repairs the planes, But they will have a tough, tough time, because so many Hy That they will work, day in, day out, until the day they dieg For Otis Blish and Hubert Monks are looping in the air, And Owen Edwards thrills us now with tricks we wouldnit dare, Dulaney Thomas flies across the field and comes to earth- We can be sure that they're all aviators of great worth- Sayl Who's this woman flyer with the cool, unerring eye? None other than Eleanor Hamby, can she fly, or can she flyl Now, whols this waiting on the ground, beside the Red Cross truck? lt's Ellen Archer, and we do not wish her lots of luck. If ever the aw of a classmate should an aching tooth contain, H-e rushes to Rhodes, the dentist, who pulls them without any pain. Should his bones, however, cause trouble, be he king or merely a doorman For osteopathic treatment he goes to Doctor Bess Webster Boarman. And, should he experience pain or disease in his eye, ear, nose, or throat, He'll dash to the doorstep of Patton, a local physician of note. And, by the way, the h-ospital is crowded to the brim, Can Plummer's truck have struck someone? Not that, we can't blame him No, everybodyis going there-but why, oh, why? Ah, curses! They're all becoming ill because they want to see the nurses! Appendix out, or tonsils yanked? The patients balk at neither Willem Betty Stephenson is there administering ether, And some of them have even let professional bruisers maim ,emg But, with Boyde Sheppard there-Well, say, it's very hard to blame ,eml And burns and bruises are becoming prevalent-weire sure lt's all because Miss Preston is the one who makes the cure. Yes, Wilma Greer is also there, and with her pleasant smile, Disabled patients feel as though they'd like to run a mile. The nurse in charge, who makes the rest think only of their tasks, Is Blanche Coomesg with her tact and skill, she gets whate'er she asks. Let's go now to New York, and there we'll travel up and down, Our guide will be Frank Calder, the well-dressed Man-about-town. We'll stroll now through a quite exclusive New York fashion shoppe, Investigating everything, from basem-ent to the top, And in one room we see a girl who walks across a stage- Miss Rather's modeling a gown that soon will be the rage, F-or Phyllis Hildebrand, the dress designer, had the thought Behind the gown which soon in many places will be bought. EL Aolos, I938 , , , lt's played by Mary Strawbridge, we discover at the end. Well, what comes after that? We,ll see, ,lust listen now, my friend- What makes that front-rank man fall down? says Files-on-Parade. A touch 0' sun? no, that's not what the Color-Sergeant said, lt's one of Jimmy Poole's great jokes, the best I've ever heard, And every week I listen, trying not to miss a wordf, Yvhat businessmanls the sponsor of this betterer of Benny? Whatever he is selling, two to one we don't want any, But anyone who listens wants to buy before he leaves, ltis Acme super-advertising sponsored by George Reeves. And Mabel Edwards, the announcer, with persuasive tone. Makes it so convincing it would melt a hear-t of stone. This quite efficient radio, we feel we must say here, Was built by Herbert Pennington, th-e electrical engineer, If ever we should harm it ffor it canit go wrong itselfi We wouldnlt have to place it then upon a dusty shelf. For the firm of Harkins Sz Harkins would repair it good as new, fElectricains are Donald and Winstonl. And when the bill was due, It would be paid without a bit of argument or mess, Because the bill collector would be charming Evelyn Hess. Oh, yes, we have some travelers within our famous class, And one, indeed, of '38 is a very daring lass, In fact, it's hard to find a traveling girl as bold as she: Elizabeth Wakelandis touring the w-orld in a good -old Model T. But, if we go into the wildest jungles of Brazil, W7e'll find there Louise Bayless, exploring with a will. And Esther Gilbert has a job that is with danger fraught: She's an international agent, and holds her life at naught. Some others, too, we fin-d abroad, but they hav-esettled down: Mildred Creenfield's raising tulips in a small Dutch seacoast town. ln Czechoslovakio Henrietta Pouska now does well, With Hitler menacing we hope she stays alive and well. Lucille Bachman's in Mexico, looking for Aztec treasure, Perhaps she'll find a milli-on, and from it get much pleasure. And Mary Ann Schnepfe and Alyce Dennis have reason to be gay, They,ve married army officers and gone to Hawaii to stay. And what will happen to Bel Air High School after we go away? Will it manage to live without us, or crumble and decay? Ah! let your mind be set at ease and your thoughts continue free, For Brodnax Cameron at that time the principal will be. Yes, Mr, Remboldl' the thrilling events of history will tell, And Lee Anna Knight and Alice Greer will teach the grades as well. Marie Keen has coached a girls, champion basketball team, And Martha Worthington, with cheers and pep talks, gives them steam We have two Home Ecw teachers, Eleanor Dietz and Peggy O'Neill S-o now at the cafeteria we can get a splendid meal, And then with Evelyn Rhudy teaching French and English too, We're certain that the weaknesses of our old school are few. For kindergarten pupils, too, of worry there's no need, For Edna Bedsaulis understanding makes them learn with speed. 56
