. . g EL ADI S, l938 r l l The Student Council i The Student Council, composed iof nineteen mem- bers, carried out its regular duties e ciently this year under the leadership of Duncan Mac ae. The faculty advisors were Mrs. McMahon and Miss Archer. Miss Powell was an advisor! for the last part of the year due to Mrs. McMahon,s esignation. The Council conducted a daily gsale of chocolate 4 milk and crackers, the profits from which are its only source of fundsg it supervised the awarding of stars and Mrshvaughn Mah0n,A,B, school letters through the point system. lt appropriated funds to purchase flags for the auditorium, and! pencil sharpeners for some of the homero-oms. lt provided money for the library, the w lfare department, and the hospital room. It paid for all the class parties given by t e school, it con- ducted tournaments in chess, checkers, and ping-pong, and paid t e expenses of the track team on its trip to the Penn Relays. 1 Library Board This year, due to appropriations from the Alumni Association, School Board, and Student Council, it has been possible to increase the number of books in the library to the extent that we feel we now have a well-balanced selection. Twenty- eight magazines are received by the library, either by subscription or by donation. The card catalogue has been completed, thus simplifying thq finding of infor- mation. I Tommy O'Neill is the new junior member of the board. i Welfare Department A The Welfare Department, supervised the first half-year by Mis. McMahon and the latter half by Miss Archer, sent the pupils and teachers wholwere ill, fruit or flowers or cards. I The department had charge of all lost articles which were tlirned in, and con- ducted several successful sales of unclaimed articles. The money thus obtained was used to help finance the department. 3 The Tragic Squad The trafiic squad, an organization composed of two officers elected from each homeroom, was under the guidance of Frank Calder and supervised by, Mr. Bond. The officers performed many valuable duties, besides leading their respective classes. Among the important ones were the putting up and taking down of chairs in th-e assemblyhallg the parking and directing of traffic during spjecial functions at schoolg and the seating of pupils for each assembly. 3 The trafiic regulations are enforced by the officers and t e traffic court- made up of the captain, lieutenant, secretary, and arresting officer. his court has not functioned many times this year-the punishment meted out by ilt were too severe to be popular. 1 A 41
