Our sponsor in our Freshmen year was mrs. N. E. Lloyd. We, the green freshmen, soon came to the conclusion that we needed officers to represent us, the following officers were elected: Ulenard Leet, president, Phyllis fulkerson, 'ice-lresidentg Janet Thompson, Treasurer, Louise Payne, Secretary, Lila Ballard, Reporter. The following fall, l9h6, we enrolled for our Sophomore year, with four members falling our. Feeling a little more important, we readily elected the following officers: Glenard Leet, President Uorthy Barlett, Vice-President, Edyth Galloway, Secretary, Alice Johnson, Treasurer, Marjorie Harl, Reporter. One of the social activities this year was our class party, we were advised by our class sponsor, Mr. Charles Loyal. Our basket ball team won the indiviual sportmanship trophy in the tournament. In l9h7 we intered as upperclassmen under the leadership of Mr. Charles Loyal. We chose our class officers as the following, Jimmie Stringer, President, Glenard Leet, Vice-President, Phyllis Fulkerson, Secretary, Bobby Young, Treasurer, Janet hompson, Rep- orter. We entered whole hearthly into the activities of our bas- ketball team, with two of our junior girls, Phyllis bulkerson and Janet Thompson as cheerleaders. Also with two of our boys, Bill Cooper and Glenard playing on the first team. We ended the year happily by taking the Senior class to the Mammoth Cave, on our way home we went through the Reptile Garden,-some of the students had their pictures made with the snakes. To our sorrow, on August 29, l9h8, our dearly beloved school was struck by lightning and destroged by fire. Do to begin our -enior year we were sent to Beech rove High School. h The year of 'LB k 'LQ was the year for us. We were Seniors at last. ur goal for the future had been reached. WE had twenty- seven at the beginning of our Freshmen year, but due to marriages, engagements, moving our of the district and other reasons, there remained only nine on the final date. Mr. Norbert Ward, as sponsor helped us to elect our Senior officers. Glenard Leet as President but due to his leaving at mid-term Jimmie Stringer was elected in his place, Vice-President, Colene McDaniel, Secretary, Alice Johnson, Bobby Ball Treasure, Reporters, Marjorie Karl and Glenola Young. We sponsored the sale of candy all during the year for of our annual funds. mary Clark Payne, was elected by the Seniors and the teachers to be D. A. R. of our class. The Senior boy, who deserves honorable mention is Herbert Moss, who served in the Navy. Our High School history ends as we, Seniors, have completed our fourth year of school. We want to express our deepest appre- ciation to the faculty for their patience and untiring efforts to teach us the worth while knowledge which we will need in the future our High School days are pleasant memories and so we leave with the hope that, if God is willing, our future and the future og all the world will be happy, prosperous, and peaceful. Louise Payne Yi.,, 'YW-A-V---M , O -- 1 THE HISTORY OF CLASS l9h9 BEECH GROVE To some people, history means a series of wars, histori- cal discoveries and similar things. his is not true with the Glass of l9L9, Beech Grove. It gives us pleasure to think of our history as a series of happenings, including both work'- and play. How else could it have been successful? We do not pretend to be unusual, although we are thankful for the abun- dance of talent displayed by our class members. Inesperienced as we are, we realize the importance of working towards a goal, for we know those who do are most likely to succeed. The four years in dear old Beech Grove Aigh are happy days to remember. So let us wander back and consider for a moment the outstanding activities of the Class of IQLQ. Although we were excited on beginning our new career, there was nothing note-worthy or particularly grand about our entraice in 5eptember, 19h5. For a good beginning we chose Mrs. Leach- man as our sponsor and Glenola Young for president. . After a plesant vacation, we returned to school as sopho - mores, well recognized. We dreamed of the day we would really be seniors. Miss Hayden was our efficient sponsor for this ye- ar and Vernon Hudson was president. Now time was passing fast and we were truly njolly juniorsn. Under the leadership of Mrs. Hicks, we accomplished many things. The proceeds from the junior three-act play nThe Scarecrow Creeps and a Thanksgiving supper enabled us to take the Senior class on a trip tc the Ozark Mountains. ' Finally, after going to school for eleven years, we reached the climax. At last we were SENIORS. We presented, along with our fellow students from west Louisville, a senior play nNo Brde For The Groomn. The juniors honored us with a trip. It is now with feelings of joy and pride we say our last fa- rewell to dear old Beech Grove High. Needless to say, we hope the following classes will derive as much happiness in being a of this great school, as has been our privilege to enjoy. Sa as a fortune teller, looking into crystal globe, I turn my eyes to the future to see what this group of Seniors now will be doing in l9SMg just five short years from this date. It is now IQSH, and as I peer into my crystal globe, I can see one group standing out above the others. This group is none other than the Senior Class of l9h9. I can see a streamer sailing up the Pacific Ocean commande by none other than our dear classmate, Clyde Sandefur. As I take a closer look I see he is commanding 'The Slow Boat to China,n and for once we cannot see his mother waiting up for him. As I look Eastward, I see the Island of Okinawa and some- thing else familiarg could it be Alice Johnson? Yes, with things clearer, I see that it is she. Alice's duties seem to be two fold, one serious and the other frivilious. I can see her teaching the natives, and happy thought, Charles is her help mate. As I look back toward home I see our dear old friend Alford Ray Lloyd going from door to door campaning for the office of Governor. Now as things are growing brighter we see Alford entering his home where he finds his dear wife by the name of nNancyu very busy taking care of their family. The next morning I see byself hopping a train to Hollywood arriving at the depot I take the next taxi out to the residence of Mrs. Johnson. The maid answered the door and escorted me into the living room. Much to my amazement I found Mrs. Johnson to be the former Louise Payne. As we continued our conversation Louise tells me about our dear class mate Edyth Galloway, who is very busy as secretary of the Taylor Insurance Co. in New York. Edyth is also occupied spending nTeters' millions and also his time. As I turn my eyes toward Panther way, there is Mary Edna Clark Payne managing the old NHome Townu. Who is the fellow nearby? That is Boots-who by this time as expert ducking the rolling pin. As I go down to Madison Square Garden I see a momument erected in honor of Jimmie Stringer who has made his fortune as a comedian in ministeral shows. He is now staring with the ziegfield follies, in Panther, Ky. Ohl I can see a dignified young fellow with a mustache. He happens to be none other than Herbert Moss. Herbert tells me he is the owner of NCen1s1no Pool Hall.n Wonder if he can take time out from playing to run it satisfactory? d i , , ....-.--.2-....-F.--.. ..- -.--1' - I 1 CLASS PROPHESY-CONTINUED Now as I turn back to California I see Marjorie June Harl waiting anxiously for Jake, who is coming home from Hollywood where he is now staring in the famous picture, nCrazy Over Shortieu. I see Janet Sue Moss sailing the seven seas with Gene to see if the saying is true, HA Girl in Every Portn. Wonder if this will be the beginning or the end? Now I see Bobby Ball sitting at the head of a big executiv meeting. This time he is using his own judgment instead of going to mother for advice. And by the way booby is still looking for a wife. I can now see a common scene, a lady pushing a baby buggy with two children following her. Something looks gamiliar as I take a second glance I see that this is the former Glenola Young. She tells me that she is now Mrs. Robert Cummings and too,she is having a very happy life. With a tiny twist of the crystal I catch a glimpse of Mary Helen Miller, pardon, Nurse Miller, who is still undecided about Lee. Finally, my globe grows dim, dimmer, until I can no longer find any shadows and it is with weary eyes but happy spirits that I draw the curtain. As I peer deeper into my crystal ball, a landscape scene with a country church comes within focus. Adjusting my globe I see this church beautifully decorated for some special occasion. A happy group of people are gathered around a couple in wedding dress. Yes, you have guessed, it is our dear class mate Coleen McDaniel-now the bride of Moye Algood. So I have turned my eyes to the future and I am left with a feeling of pleasure in knowing of the success and happiness of the class of l9h9. Phyllis Jean Fulkerson , we r '-nj-r -- LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF THE SENIOR CLASS OF IQLQ We, the Seniors of Beech Grove High School, County of McLean State of Kentucky, in the year of our ord nineteen hundred and forty neine, after acquiring all the knowledge possible from this worthy institution, feel it our humble duty to make a last will and testament ot bequeat all our assests as a shining example and guiding light to those seniors yet to come. We the Senior Class leave our brains to the green freshemen, our dignified ways to the silly sophmores, and our places as Sen- iors to the Junior Class, with our best wishes to each class for many happy years to come. Ward, we bequeath our sincere appreciation for their patience and advice. To the janitor we leave all our empty coke bottles, our candy pap- ers and ice cream boxes. lo thecooks we leave all our unwashed dishes and uneaten food. The senior year, or at least we have been led to believe, is the happiest year of all. The seniors have privileges heretofore unthought ofg they are permitted to do pretty much as they please. This year, however there certainly were changes in the rules. The teachers treated us with little or no respect. One would think the faculty might have treated us with the respect we deserved but no, they assigned all kinds of difficult lessons AND expected us to prepare them. Mr. Kirkwood gave us algebra, unknowns to conquer with- out giving us an answer book to copy from. The exams we suffered through, not even freshmen could get the answers! Then there was the business of hookey playing. Just let a dignified senior turn his footsteps in another direction other than school on the school days and there was a fifteen page theme awaiting him upon his return. Now wasn't that disgusting? Can't the members of the faculty realize that traveling about the country side is educational? The freshmen! how many horrible things they have done. For example, freshmen walked in the halls along side of us instead of standing back at attention as we passed by. The sophomores were always cooking up something delicious in Home Ec. Class, but did they offer to share thier tid bits with us? No---we were forced to be content with just the smell. Our dear friends, the juniors, however, treated us half way, as befitted our station. They were educated enough to understand the meaning of the word Nsenlorn. Finally, the water in this institution would choke a horse, much less us. You have no doubt heard of uOld Faithfuln, our drinking founts are the exact replicas of NOld Facefu1.n Since we have passed through these years of misery we believe that school wasn't so bad after all, and that we could have been treated worse. So with a sigh, we leave this school to its teachers and students, for the future seniors to grumble at and to love. Marjorie June Harl H Q Herbert Earl Noss nHerbn F.F.A.
