The representative governing body of Bedford High School is known as the Szudenr Council. At the beginning of the school year each home room elects two delegates, one boy and one girl, to serve as their representatives at the bi-monthly meetings. This year's President is john Boruff and the spon- sors :ire Miss Newsom, Dean of Girls, and Mr. Baldwim, B. H. S. principal. The main project this year was to build spirit among the students. Other functions of this group are: f: assist in yell-leader election, sponsor the annual Homecoming. and aid in the selection of convocation programs. At the beginning of each year a picnic is given in honor of all 9B girls .incl all girls new to the school. At this picnic the girls are given folclers that explain the full meaning of Tri-Hi-Y. The group is busy throughout the year with many activities. They sell pencils in the office from which they net a small income. They have solcl more than -4,200 pencils this year. The group also solcl W7 beautiful corsages for wear at the Sectional anti Regional tournaments. Service projects of the year incluclecl the distribution of Heart Funcl collection containers ancl the collection of approximately 2,000 pouncls of chilclrens clothing for clistrihution to the neecly of our own ancl other countries. Frienclship projects inclucle the presentation of a small gift to each teacher on his.or her birthtlay .intl the sponsorship of the annual Mothers Day Tea for which a program is presented .incl refreshments are servetl to the mothers of all high school stutlc-nts. OUR SCHOOL PAPER Like ,lack Benny, The Stone City Student is celebrating this year its 59th birthday, The paper was founded in IQIS by Merle AI. Abbett. who was at that time the high school principal. Its first editor was George Armstrong and Howard Allen, now Dr. I.. H. Allen, was its first business manager. The I957 Student is fortunate in having a new office, Room IU, which is used for nothing but a publication center for the paper One side of this room is covered with pictures of pep- sessions and other school activities that have been taken by I-aVonne Uratzer and .lim Robbins with the excellent camera furnished them by the Bedford Daily Times-Mail. A mounted moose head. nicknamed Moosie , is the mascot of the staff. No one knows where Moosie came from, but his spirit of curiosity and daring rules the Student this year. This is the first year that it has been possible for pictures to be used in the school paper and they have added greatly to the schools enjoyment of the publication. The Editorial staff actually writes Llp the yearbook. Each section is done by .1 group of students headed by an editor and his assistants. The job of the Business staff is to collect advertisements from Bedford businessmen to finance the publication of the yur book. Their work is .1 very important part of the Pioneer staff. For the past fourteen years Mrs. Helen Chandler has had the direction of this group and under her leader- ship many memorable productions have been pre- sented for the pleasure of the public, Membership is based on tryouts. Any member of the three upper classes may apply for membership. Outstanding plays presented in the past few seasons include The Bishops Mantle , Line of Scrimmage , and Foot- loose. Tl-IESPIAN TROUPE No. 609 Thespians have been operating under their local charter since 1947. Membership requirements are set up by the National Council on a merit basis. Aims of this group are: to establish and promote standards of excellence in all phases of the dramatic arts and to create an active and intelligent interest in drama among students of the secondary schools. The Thespian banquet, an annual affair, is open to alumni and serves as a time for the initiation of new members. The old projection room has been converted into the food storage room for the cafeteria. Miss Maish and Mrs. Graham check supplies. The stack of ovens in which all breads and meats for the schools are prepared turn out some luscious ford. Mrs. Graham and Mrs. Colglazier inspect the turkeys for that special Christmas feast. Since all food served at Stalker. lunior Hiuh and High School is prepared in the high school kitchen. the menu committee, representing all participating schools, meets each second Tuesday to plan the menu for the next two weeks. BUILDING IMPROVEMENTS Among the many changes in our school this year are the change of the library into the projection room and the old shop room into an exceptionally pleasing typing room, liv hanging black-out curtains in the old library area that space was made into an efficient visual education center and is used many hours each day. Bedfords GAA was organized in l942 by Carolyn Dejean and is now directed by Mrs. Virginia Hodges. GAA activities .ire divided into two sections, organized and unorganized sports. Organized sports meet once a week under the supervision of Mrs. Hodges. Unorganized sports are carried out after school hours and are generally given credit by .1 signed statement of time. GAA meets every Wednesday after school and plays basketball and volleyball alternatively for a twelve week period. A point system is used in determining the number of activity points a girl may earn during a school year. Ten points are received for six weeks of play in organized play. Five points are received for six weeks of unorganized play. A total of l50 points entitles the girl to a Block B and a total of 250 points entitles her to an Old English Besides working hard in their sports, this year the GAA girls had time to relax and make red and white shakers for the sectional.
