Ronnie DeFord, Sally McDoxvell, Don Albietz Linda Little, Martha East, jean Paul, Sarah Kremp, Phyllis Espy, Sammie Houston, Lavonne Gratzer get ready to distribute an issue of The Student. The students of Bedford High School had not attempted to publish a school paper until the year 1918. In that year, through the efforts of Blaine Guthrie, editor-in-chief, and George Armstrong, assistant editor, The Stone City Student, a semi-monthly publication came into existence. Mr. Merle J. Abbett, then the High school principal was the faculty advisor. In 1925 a change in faculty advisors gave Miss Imogene Chase full charge of the publication. A journalism class was estab- lished by Miss Chase and a great part of their work was given over to the editing of The Student. The Student took first prize in the state contests held in 1925, '26, '27, '29, and '55 under the advisorship of Miss Chase. The purpose of the paper is, as it always was, to reflect the spirit of the school both in academic work and the numerous activities of students and teachers. The editors of the Student who are remembered through the years for their accomplishments are Blaine Guthrie '18, Arthur Hughes '19, LaVerne Ramage '20, Willian McFadden '21, Paul Cook '22, Mary Elizabeth Plummer '25, King Trainor and Ralph Sappenfield '24, Betty Cook '25, Loren Hanner '26, Artemus Blackwell '27, Ruth Pitman '28, Fred Cuddy '29, Robert Ringold and Ruth Dinah Black '50, Har- riet Jenkins '51, Class '52, Frank May '55, Margaret McClelan '54, Fred Hutton '55, Geraldine Shaver '56, John David Bailey '57, Eddie Butler '58, Eva Davis '59, Tom Meglemre '40, Rebecca Harris '41, Patty Kibler and Margaret Davis '42, jane Marshall '45, Mary A. LaVonne Gratzer, Shirley Brooking, Howard Duncan, Steve jones, lohn Pless. Mr. Coombs, Ronald Bell. Marilyn East. Barbara Blackwood. Eddie Ellison, Roger Chase, Don Smallwood, Bob Motsinger, Bob McPike, Dodd Edington. This group, one of the largest organized clubs in Bedford High School, was started in 1948 by Mr. Carpenter and was taken over by Mr. Coombs, present B.H.S. science teacher, in 1955. The members meet every other Monday night and strive to have an appropriate speaker at each meeting. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors make up the body of this extremely large club. and are welcome to join at any time. DRIVER 3' TRAINING CLASS The drivers training class was established in 1948. Vernon Crane has been teacher of this subject since it was established. This class meets 5 days a week and counts W credit toward graduation. The main goal of driver training is to cultivate in high school students safe driving habits. Pat Walker, Tom Thomas, -Iudy Kirk, Marie Lynn, Mr. Crane seated, Nancy Stough, Linda Scifres.
