New goals to reach, new fields to explore, New friends to find on this unknown shore, And so we depart with a nod and a smile And say, farewell for a little while. May not our time in vain pursuits be spent, We to whom such happiness has been sent. May we hold as our aim a shining star And look up to it as it gleams afar. Should we turn back or keep our pace? Should we stumble or win the race? ’Tis not the easiest path we want Where joys and pleasures and luxuries taunt. Give us the hardships we must endure, Temptations calling and sin’s proud lure. We'll ignore these vices and prove to you That to the highest principles we will be true. Always at the close of a year To some this parting will bring a tear. We cover what we feel with a smile And say, farewell for a little while. May we as we journey along Face this new life with a happy song. May we joyfully work and joyfully give And learn to hope and wisely live. The time has come to say goodbye To our dear teachers and Bedford High, And thus we part with a nod and a smile And say, farewell for a little while. By ELEANOR MEapows. As legal representative of the Senior Class of 1939, I have the privilege and honor of producing and reading their last will and testament, as follows: We, the class of 1939, in sound and healthy physique, do hereby make this our last will and testament. We hereby declare all previous promises to pay, wills or testaments made by this class as null and void. It is with heartfelt pride that we step into a life unknown in possession of inval- uable knowledge gained in Bedford High School. Thus to the entire faculty, being responsible, we leave our deepest love and appreciation. To the Class of ’40, we leave the seats in assembly, of which we were so proud. To the entire enrollment, we leave our goal of high attainment, toward which they in future years can work. Each article here listed is bequeathed to the below individuals, according to the terms of this will and testament. I, Charlie Yowell, bequeath my athletic ability to David Draper. I, Imogen Claytor, leave my ability to argue to Jean Delaney. I, Dean Karnes, bequeath my title as the “most bashful boy” to Hugh Simpkins. We, Alvin and Lucile, bequeath our enjoyment of our senior year together to Jimmy McIver and Virginia McClintock. I, Margaret Turner, bequeath my girlish figure to Anne Miller. I, Jack Catlin, bequeath my love for the fairer sex to Hugh Mackey. I, Fred Powers leave my title of “sweetest” boy to John Turner. I, Nellie Hatcher, bequeath my ability to get along with the male population of this institution to Viola Shrader. I, Ethel Stanley, do bequeath my ability to get straight “A” average to Frank Johnson. I, Thurman Coleman, do bequeath my height to Weldon Rossazza. Thus on the 31st day of May, 1939, we make our last bestowals in any form or fashion. Kent NicuHots, Testator. JUNIORS OFREIGERS GAMIEL DRaPER . é ; : ‘ ; . President Davip DRraPER ‘ : , ; : . The collection of snapshots were taken by Charles Garrette and Charles Reynolds; art work was handled by Kent Nichols and Ethel Stanley; Katherine Truxell and Nellie Hatcher assembled and labeled the various organizations. To the following the Peaks Staff wish to express their kindest appreciation in helping get out this volume: Mr. J. L. Borden for his assistance and cooperation. Mr. J. A. Baseball FOO BEDFORD 0 WILLIAM FLEMING 21 Bedford suffered a bad case of nerves in this opening game by dropping at least five scoring touchdown passes. Gamiel Draper’s passing was sensational. BEDFORD 25 CHRISTIANSBURG 0 On a wet field Bedford ran up the highest score of the season. Capt. Jack Catlin was the outstanding player in this game. BEDFORD 14 ALTAVISTA 0 The line play of two Senior linemen, Kent Nichols and Alvin Thomas, began to assert itself in this game. BEDFORD 12 LOW MOOR 12 Low Moor and Bedford fought it out to a 12-12 stalemate. Bedford as usual stuck fast and hung on against a much heavier team. Watts Gills played one of his best defensive games in this one. Fronié row, left to right—-Charlie Yowell, right end; Beauregard Parks, right tackle; Kent Nichols, running guard; Ed Powers, center; Watts Gills, left guard; Alvin Thomas, left tackle; David Draper, left end. Back row, left to right—Gamiel Draper, halfback; Jimmie Mclver, blocking back; Jack Catlin, quarterback; Sherrill Coleman, halfback; Coach Painter. ie 1, 1 BEDFORD 12 VINTON 12 In this never to be forgotten game Bedford rose to supreme heights to stop the unbeaten, unscored on, untied Terriers. Once again it was Gamiel Draper pitching and Jack Catlin catching perfect football passes that told the story. On the defense Ed Powers, offensive center, stood out while playing defensive end. Charles Yowell, offensive end, often hit the Vinton safety man the instant he received Catlin’s booming punts. BEDFORD 47 GEASSSI Ra 6 Big Beauregard Parks stayed in the opponents backfield this game to help make this one of the most successful of the Otter’s Home Coming encounters. BEDFORD 0 LEXINGTON 6 Bedford without the services of halfback James McIver and with Gamiel Draper playing with a dislocated shoulder offered stubborn, if not sufficient opposition. BEDFORD 19 BUENA VISTA 6 Sherrill Coleman, David Draper and Lewis Zimmerman deserve the plaudits for this game. Sherrill took over the quarterbacking duties when Catlin was injured early in the game. David was converted into a halfback to replace the injured Mclver. Lewis filled David’s place on end in the manner of a veteran. First row, left to right—J. D.
