The squad lived football for five straight days, culminating with a multi-team scrimmage against three other Cape teams. The week proved too much for cap- tain Dave Barrett who dislocated his shoulder on the second day and missed over half the season. The offense was led by Chuck DePriest, who ran over the opposing team during the first league game to give Bedford it ' s first win of the season. The following week, class C Maynard found a few weak spots in the Bedford defense and went home with the win. The next league y game against Westwood was played in near freezing weather, but the Bucs were prepared and did all of their scoring in the first half. This proved to be enough and I i 60 Bedford went on to win. Bedford then traveled to Lynn- field and lost a tough one to their strong opponents. The following week, Bedford came home to meet Lincoln- Sudbury. Steve Wood led both the defense and the of- fense to a warm-up win in preparation for the Wayland game. Wayland was the big game of the season. With a win over Wayland, Bedford would probably end up Dual County Champs. However, this was not Bedford ' s year. Bedford ' s Bucs came back in the second half from a 6—0 deficit with a touchdown by Steve Wood. Way- land made a last minute drive, and combined with a few Bedford mistakes, took the victory out of Bedford ' s grasp. The following week, Bedford returned home to a tough loss against Westford. The final game of the season against Burlington took place on Thanksgiving Day. Burlington proved too much for the Bucs and took the Turkey. The season was over, but on Winter Sports awards night, five Bedford stars received league honors. Paul Higgins was voted first team tackle for his excellent line performance. Joe LaDow was voted first team end for his pass receiving excellence. Steve Wood was voted first team quarterback for his outstanding leadership. Lamar Wells was voted second team center for his out- standing job as a defensive middle guard, and Chuck DePriest tied a Wayland back for second team honors as fullback. These men represent the fine Bedford team on the Dual County League All Star Team. BASKETBALL The Bedford Bucs, under coach Keith Adams, started their ■ason early with lots of running and weight lifting. At press me, the Bug ' s record is 5 wins and 7 losses. The season was a t disappointing as the Bucs had had thoughts of making the ech Tourney. The varsity squad was led by their two senior co- ptains, Joe LaDow and Joe Dooley. Two juniors who showed fomise for next year were Dan McDonnell and Dan Santos. The Bedford Junior Varsity has a record of 11 wins and 1 loss, of press time. The young Bucs were led by the scoring feats of ill Waterman and Mike Elias. SPRING WINTER TRACK Coach Powers proved he is a man for all seasons by coaching both Spring and Winter Track. Spring Track sports such events as the pole vault, high jump, long jump, 100 yard dash, 220 yard dash, the 1 mile and 2 mile, the shot put and the discus. The Winter Track Team had its best season in 4 years. Some of the pace-setters were Dave Thurlow, Brian Lewis, Karl Gerdes, Jim Giencke, Ken Durkin and Mark Burmeister. ' 1 I CROSS COUNTRY The Bedford Cross Country team compiled a record of 6 wins and 8 losses this year. This record does not seem too impressive but then again, it is hardly a fair reflection of the individual efforts of each team member. After the normal work-out of 5 miles, many runners could still be seen doing extra work on their own. During the meets they not only had to concen- trate on their running, but also on the condition of the various courses. Throughout the season the Bucs ran in rain, mud, sand, 90 degree heat, freez- ing cold, and dark forests. The tortuous courses averaged 2.7 miles but our antelope-like runners always finished in fine style, making Bedford one of the most respected teams in the Dual County League. Nip and puck is definitely not the expression to describe their skillful strategy. The senior members of the group include Mike Lane, Tony Baudanza, Gerry Han- rahan, Gary Kennedy, and Bob Landfear. Even though Bedford will lose these fine players, next year ' s team is sure to put the freeze on the op- ponents. This year they have had scrimmages against two colleges and the state champions of Marble- head, whom we defeated. The team, coached by Mr. William Keup, has really increased its sharpness and moved up with the big towns. Seniors that will be missed are captain Dave Crook, Ed Keyes, Mark Letizi, and Bob Dishman. The team also boasts such members as Bob Crook, Gary Fogg, Dave Blacksmith, and Bob Stitt. We are thankful that the School Committee enabled us to build our range in the Bedford High School. This has enabled us to practice every day and it is a big help to the program. 75 SOCCER Despite the fact that the Soccer team had a dis- appointing season, they managed to set a new record for the number of wins for a Bedford soccer team in one season. There one and eleven season did not show the true potential of the team. They were a young team and most of the players have played very little soccer prior to playing with Bedford. The high scorer for the team this year was that budding superstar, John Hafer. He piled up five goals for the season and was nominated for the Dual County League All-Star team along with Jim Hodgkins. 76 GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Tiiii: AUTS MADRIGAL MUSIC GIRLS ' ENSEMBLE 88 CHOIR BOYS ' ENSEMBLE I STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE Bill Henrickus, George Hutchinson, Mike Kineen Nanqr Bergin, Karen Le. tizi, Elizabeth Michaud Beate Klein, Marcia South wick, Mark Burmeister Debbie Rue, Bob Sachs, Sue Barrett, Sue Kenney, Janet Rice, Jean Tatosian Valerie Bean, Ed Scheipers Dorrie Saunders, Kathy Stidworthy, Frances Mon talto, Lynn Beaumont, Les lie Dolan, Karl Gerde: Ed Keyes. I Graduation is often thought of as a terminal period in one ' s life — it is the end of formal education for many; and the end of adolescence for most. The atmosphere is filled with nostalgia and the feeling of finality. Your high school years are a thing of the past. I hope they have been fruitful and have helped you to begin your new lives as adults. I can leave you with no more poignant a commencement message than the thoughts expressed in the words of the philosopher- poet Emerson. Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it well and serenely and with a high spirit to be unencumbered with your old faults and problems. Mr. L ' heureux Assistant Superintendent In my years in education, I have come to realize that one must have goals and objectives in life, and to achieve these in recognized terms of success requires some sacrifices, a strong ambition, and a true desire to accomplish these ends. The Roman philosopher, Seneca, reminds us that if we do not know to which port we are sailing, no wind is favorable. Best wishes to all graduates in your future endeavors! Mr. Glenn Superintendent 110 Your four years in secondary school have presented many opportunities, challenges, and problems. We have attempted to provide you with the mechanism to make decisions wisely. There is no doubt you will be confronted with many situations which will require you to draw upon this mechanism. The decision you make will be a result of your education here and at home. Choose wisely and draw upon all your resources to make a wise decision. Mr. Gollis Principal Each of us I suppose, can be thought of as living in two worlds; our own personal, intimate one with its complement of friends, problems, attitudes and other complex social ties; and the larger outside world replete with its more than ample share of problems. I now suggest to you as you graduate from high school that there has to be a significant influence of one on the other. If we all make an effort to keep our own individual world in order, with generous portions of patience, kindness, toler- ance and love, our combined influence has to have a profound effect on the larger world, which sorely needs it. Good luck to each and every one of you. Mr. Melanson Acting Principal Happiness for humanity lies, not in control of others but in control of the self. Your graduation from Bedford High School implies that you have learned certain arts and sciences. Have you also learned self-control.- ' Mr. McCauley Assistant Principal 112 I thank you for the opportunity that I have had to assist you over the last four years. Now it becomes your responsibility to take your place in society for the benefit of all. Move ahead with determination and a questioning spirit; however, do not dedicate your lives to change for the sake of change. Beware of tearing down without a plan to rebuild. Use your efforts and resources wisely, and the world may benefit from your success. Mr. Ambrose Assistant Principal The graduating class of 1971 sincerely thanks you, Mr. Ambrose, for donating your time and effort over the past four years. Your role has not always been an easy one but we hope that at the same time it has been rewarding. Thank You. Why must that he so very difficult? 143 At times, in unexpected moments, a man can see his life in a series of reflections and recognize how much of himself he owes to all the people he has loved. N Therefore, putting away falsehood, let every one speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger . . .
