MR. MORGAN To the Class of 1964 This is the first graduating class with whom I have been in contact throughout their junior-senior high program. September 1963 marked the sixth anniversary of my employment as director of guidance services for the town of Bedford, and so I may perhaps be excused for looking at this class with a rather special sense of involve- ment. I am sure the members of this class undoubtedly have varied opinions as to my reasons for choosing guidance counseling as my profession. I personally feel myself involved in a branch of education that is completely concerned with the individual; that does not attempt to instill discipline from without but rather to build self- discipline from within: that attempts to find the locus of human value in each individual and in each situation; that stresses the need to assist each individual in finding himself as a person realizing his worth and making, within the limits of reality, effective use of this worth. In other words, in our program we try to respect students as they are and see them for what they might be. We try to be on hand when the need for support or information arises. Fundamentally, we have tried to be the friend of each student at Bedford. The value of the past six years of effort depends in major part upon what each of you beomes in the years that lie ahead. Naturally, it is our hope that somehow, in some way, we shall have been of assistance to you. Whether we were, either directly or indirectly, is a matter of conjecture. I have, however, one request of this class of 1964: if some day, somewhere, in the years to come you find a moment of time — write us and let us know what you have become and where you are going. It will be important for us to hear from you. It will give meaning to our efforts and direction to our program. We have been privileged by our involvement in your early educational experience.
