fa Memory of . . PRESIDENT JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY May 29, 1917— November 22, 1963 On November 22, 1963, the citizens of the United States — indeed the citizens of the whole world — lost a great friend and leader, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. This was probably the greatest tragedy and heaviest sense of emptiness that any of us in the class of 1964 have ever experienced. In the eyes of the world, here was an unbelievably great man. But possibly this feeling of emptiness is uppermost in the hearts of the teenagers of our coun- try. Here was the youngest president ever elected to that office. He was a vibrant, shining personality who pursued all his works with youthful enthusiasm. Only the words of God could express our grief at this loss so close to our hearts. But let us not live in the past, wishing that our beloved president be brought back to life through some great miracle. Rather let us look into the future, for upon graduating in June, we, the class of ' 64, shall become that future. And should one of us succeed this great man — an awesome thought indeed — we humbly express the desire that he pattern himself after Mr. Kennedy, that he carry out faithfully and successfully all those things through which Mr. Ken- nedy ' s inspiration we know ought to be done: always being loyal to our country, its purposes, and its Constitution; upholding liberty, religious freedom, and equality for all. John E. Klemack Member of the Class of 1964 2 Dedication MR. ROBERT MORGAN You have always been the guiding force behind this class, as well as previous senior classes. Through your unselfish efforts, you have managed to see that a majority of the students went on to further their educations. You have been patient and generous with your time and talents. You have gone beyond the call of duty to help our class. There- fore, with great pride and deep gratitude, we, the class of 1964, dedicate this, our year- book, to you, Mr. Robert Morgan. 4 Through the past four years at Bedford High School, you, as our class advisor, have helped us to become the future adults of America. You have given your support and encouragement to MR. CHESTER MELANSON our every endeavor. Every one of us has profited from your friendship and fine example. There- fore, with admiration, respect, and love, we, the Class of 1964, dedicate this, our yearbook, to you, Mr. Chester Melanson. yearbook Staff Assistant Business Editors MIKE KING MARY WEBBER 7 Zablc of Contents Administration MR. JOHN GLENN Superintendent of Schools Most accomplishments of man have required an expenditure of energy, an ability to achieve, and an impelling desire to improve. Each of us is endowed with much energy and ability; it is desire or initiative which limits our achievements and delimits our true capacities as individuals. This untapped reservoir of unused intellectual capacity is a tremendous waste and one which none of us can afford. The determination to harness and utilize our full capacities is a decision left to each of us. The rewards are many for those of us who apply ourselves diligently to the tasks at hand. Best wishes are extended to each member of the Class of 1964 for a most happy and successful future. 10 MR. JAMES KINNEEN Vice Principal Few of our contemporary leaders have left such a lasting impact on the minds and hearts of all Americans as did our late president, John F. Kennedy. His ideals, intelli- gence, understanding, and steadfastness of purpose pro- vide worthy qualities for each of you to emulate. From his eternal flame, light your torch of faith in the Lord, an insatiable quest for knowledge, and a respect for the dignity of all human beings. Follow and live up to these precepts so that the New Frontier will become, in reality, a land of life, liberty, and happiness for all. MR. EDWARD GILLESPIE Principal There are many kinds of pride, but the most satis- fying of all is that which stems from achievement. There is nothing quite comparable to the pride in personal accomplishment, the thrilling inner glow which comes from doing — day in and day out— to the best of one ' s ability, that which he sets out to do. The Class of 1964 has accomplished much during its four years at Bedford High School and may take pride in its achievement. In terms of personal quali- ties, this year ' s senior class has been outstanding in its ability to organize and to implement successfully whatever plans it has undertaken for the well-being of its members and the student body as a whole. You, the Class of 1964, believe in giving to the world the best you have, and I am certain that the best will come back to you. m faculty MR. MORGAN To the Class of 1964 This is the first graduating class with whom I have been in contact throughout their junior-senior high program. September 1963 marked the sixth anniversary of my employment as director of guidance services for the town of Bedford, and so I may perhaps be excused for looking at this class with a rather special sense of involve- ment. I am sure the members of this class undoubtedly have varied opinions as to my reasons for choosing guidance counseling as my profession. I personally feel myself involved in a branch of education that is completely concerned with the individual; that does not attempt to instill discipline from without but rather to build self- discipline from within: that attempts to find the locus of human value in each individual and in each situation; that stresses the need to assist each individual in finding himself as a person realizing his worth and making, within the limits of reality, effective use of this worth. In other words, in our program we try to respect students as they are and see them for what they might be. We try to be on hand when the need for support or information arises. Fundamentally, we have tried to be the friend of each student at Bedford. The value of the past six years of effort depends in major part upon what each of you beomes in the years that lie ahead. Naturally, it is our hope that somehow, in some way, we shall have been of assistance to you. Whether we were, either directly or indirectly, is a matter of conjecture. I have, however, one request of this class of 1964: if some day, somewhere, in the years to come you find a moment of time — write us and let us know what you have become and where you are going. It will be important for us to hear from you. It will give meaning to our efforts and direction to our program. We have been privileged by our involvement in your early educational experience. In a departmental and an individual sense, we wish you well.
