With increased partici- pation at the Spirit Assemblies, class spirit is alive and well. New recogni- tion of spirit with the spirit shield awarded to classes and honoring aca- demic as well as athletic achievers has make the student body more aware of themselves and others. Communica- tion xia the class showcases, motiva- tional posters in the halls, and the electric message board in the Cafete- ria also conveys a feeling of oneness. The conduct of students has matured as they strive to meet these challenges. Credits ♦ :ta r Credits this school year Total Credits 9-11 2 OPENING THEME ‘ gaora SuKhtll . Math, and Science to Fine and Industrial Arts. Individual Investigation also opens the door to new areas for some. By offering such a diverse curriculum, students have to opportunity to ex- plore possible career choices or spe- cial interests. A varied student body is the result of the catering to interest. This body, in turn, teaches and learns from one another. Bedford High may be viewed as a continual learning en- vironment where each class is a new chapter. The population in the Bedford City School district at the Senior High lev- el is on the decrease. Predictions for the future estimate that the enroll- ment each year will drop approxi- mately 25 students. This year's gradu- ating class.theclass of 1988. seems to be the largest that Bedford will see in the next twelve years. At this steady rate, the senior class, with 464 stu- dents. has almost 300 more students than this year's first grade class when they graduate. For the time being. Mr. Gene Minor began his career in the Coast Guard. North Ata- lantic weather duty and Air Sea Res- cue in Hamilton. Bermuda, led him to Fairmont State College. He received his Bachelor of Arts here with a major in Biology and minor in General Science. This was followed by a Mas- ters of Education in Science at the University of North Carolina. After one year of teaching in Lorain County Schools. Moody Junior and Bedford High Schools were his workplace for the next 31 years. Finding teaching a most rewarding experience and fun in the early years, Mr. Minor feels it is the time to move on to other endeav- ors and relax. After her birth in Archibald, Ohio, Mrs. Ruth Siegal attended Bowling Green State University for her Bache- lor of Science degree. Her Masters of Arts was earned at Ohio State. Many different assignments were part of her seven years in Monroe, Michigan and 34 years here in Bedford. Enjoying the classroom the most, she continued studying at John Carroll, Indiana University, Cleveland State, Kent State, Stone Hill College in Massachu- setts and The University of Edin- burgh (Scotland). Mrs. Siegal will con- tinue to be busy with her golf game and volunteer work but plans to relax as well. ■ Jm Mr. Joel Deckman, bom in Mal- vern, Ohio, retires for the second time. The first was as a captain in the ROTC Army during his education at Ohio University. Here he received his Bachelor of Science and Masters in Education. He served as teacher, foot- ball and basketball coach, and Guid- ance counselor in various Ohio school systems while studying for his Mas- ters in Administration at Akron Uni- versity. He came to Bedford City Schools 22 years ago and has been both Assistant and Principal at Moody Jr. High as well as Counselor and Assistant Principal at B.H.S.. Mr. Deck- man will “swamp” himself in some business opportunities in Ohio and Florida after retiring. 8 BEDFORD NEWS Hailing from Masontown, Pennsyl- vania, Mr. Don Cumley has taught at BedfordHigh School since 1960. He has both his Bachelor and Masters de- gree in Education. Waynesburg Col- lege, West Virginia University, Cali- fornia State College,Pa..and Akron University are schools that he has at- tended. Looking back at a rewarding career, he feels teaching has changed and is more challenging. Mr. Gorden Parnell was bom in Dayton, Ohio. After earning his de- gree at Wittenberg College, he came to Bedford. He has taught virtually all Social Studies Courses such as Ameri- can History and Government and most recently Consumer Economics. Taking it easy, Mr. Parnell will work part-time for Holcombs and plans to travel. Mr. Jerry Galvin, a native of Ath- ens, Ohio is retiring after thirty years of teaching. A graduate of Ohio Uni- versity and Kent State with a Bachelor and Masters in Education, he has en- joyed teaching. During the twenty- seven years spent at Bedford High School, he has witnessed many changes and met many interesting people. With his plans for retirement undecided, Mr. Galvin will miss teaching. A native of Lima, Ohio, Mr. John Wolfe has educated himself and oth- ers throughout his life. Receiving his Bachelor of Science degree at Bowling Green State University, he went on to his Master of Arts at Indiana Univer- sity. Still expanding his knowledge, he returned to Bowling Green for a de- gree of Educational Specialist in School Administration. Over these 30 years, Lima, Oregon and Bedford City Schools learned from him as either teacher or principal. During retire- ment, Mr. Wolfe will move closer to his family in Northwest Ohio and re- sume his remodeling jobs, including those his wife assigns. Transferring to Oxford, Ohio, after being bom in Liberty, Indiana, Mr. Jim Rose attended nearby Miami University (Ohio). He received his Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees there and went on to teach Math. Health and Physical Education. His first five years as a teacher were split between Monroe and Urbana High Schools and the U.S. Army. Today, 32 years after entering B.H.S., Mr. Rose appreciates the opportunity he has had to work with the students and staff. Ms. Karolyn Hood came to Bedford after growing up in Moorefield, West Virginia. She began her career with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health and Physical Education from Fairmont State College. She continued her edu- cation at Kent State and received her Masters of Education in Guidance and Counseling. For thirty and a half years she has enjoyed working at B.H.S. mainly because of the direct contact it offered with the Students. Ms. Hood plans on writing and travel- ing as well as enjoying the second half of her life. HOMECOMING 11 — A CELESTIAL EVENTS On Friday, September 11. the City of Bedford was named “Capital for a Day. The Governor of Ohio, Ri- chard Celeste and his staff visited many area sites as well as the Bedford High School gym, which had recently acquired a brand new floor. Fallout, which consists of three alumni and one BHS senior, provided background music for the entering student body. High spirits were exhib- ited by both faculty and students as the band finished with the popular Beatles’ song Twist and Shout.” The governor was then introduced to the excited student body by Ms. Pearl Austin. His opening remarks, which referred to his victory over Governor Rhodes and the upcoming game versus Cleveland Rhodes, quickly won over the audience. Ce- leste’s purpose soon became appar- ent; to promote a campaign against the use of drugs. Govcner Celeste proudly displays his “Just Say No shirt given to him by the student body. Student representatives Tanya Pa- lik and Bill Brand presented Gover- nor Celeste with a Bedford Bearcat “Just Say No” t-shirt. The festivities were concluded when SADD asked students to avoid using drugs for two weeks. JUNIOR VARSITY VOLLEYBALL 67 The Lady Spikers worded hard and overcame many obstacles to attain a season’s record of 5 wins and 15 losses while going 3 and 11 in the G.C.C. The major difficulty faced was finding a place to play. With repairs being make on the BHS gym floor during volleyball season. Coach Papesh was forced to take the team to the Bedford Heights Recreational Center for prac- tices and games. Much valuable prac- tice tive and energy was lost wrestling with problems such as transportation, rescheduling officials and match sites. It deprived the Lady Cats of the luxury of a ‘home field advantage' and also caused shortened practice ses- sions. Despite the adversity and incon- venience, the varsity record showed slight improvement over last season; 5-15 as opposed to 2-19. Finding height and attempting to establish a stronger feeder program” are factors that will contribute to a more success- ful future. The 1987 team was led by senior ’Cats Jeannie Dunkel, Ronna Hurtuk and Juli Metz. Backing them up were juniors; Lisa Kxumenaker, Lori Mar- chak, Karen Shuster and Julie Weak- land along with sophomores; Terri Korzeckeva and Stephanie Dragon. Named to the G.C.C. All-Conference Team was senior Nicole Urban, 3 year letter winner and standout who rounded out the roster for the 1987 Volleyball Team. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL 1987 V ARSITY VOLLEYBALL B.H.S. Bedford achieved a solid third place by going 4-3 in the Greater Cleveland Conference. The season opened with a strong 24-14 victory over the Shaker Raiders, followed by a 21-0 ride over Cleveland Rhodes. The Cats then fell to a 14-6 defeat to the Garfield Bull- dogs. Again they bounced back and routed the Willoughby South Rebels 12-0. Other contests which tilted in the Cats favor consisted of crushing the Brush Arcs 27-7, rocking the East- lake North Rangers 14-6, and man- gling our arch-rivals, the Maple Mus- tangs, 12-7. Although it resulted in de- feat for Bedford, the most exciting and intense contest was against the Euclid Panthers, according to Coach Hodakievic. And then there was Homecoming. Bolsterred by the week’s activities filled with school spirit the Bearcats once again put up their defenses but fell short with a 26- 14 defeat to the Mayfield Wildcats. Coach Hodakavic summarized the 1987 season by commenting, “It was successful cause of the way the players came together.” He emphasized that some of the high points of the year were how the players developed week after week and how the passing and running game was well balanced. Top runner Kevin Denk led the Varsity Bearcats by consistently plac- ing third in his better meets. He was followed by Senior Jeremy Lord who placed 21st out of 82 runners at the U.S. Cross Country Invitational. Garth Peterson ran his best time against Maple at Stafford while Jef- frey Dunnigan set forth his personal best against South. Lord and Peterson were almost able to shave a minute off last year's time as Denk and Dunni- gan showed improvements near 30 se- conds. Team efforts were exemplified in the Coaches’ Classic where the 'Cats placed 9th out of 18 teams, and against Shaw where the boys’ team dominated second through fifth place to crush their opponent 23-33. Individual efforts by Sue Snow and Lisa Gillen were also commendable as they were the only female runners last season. Sue and Lisa placed 13th and 15th respectively at the U.S Cross Country Invitational out of 74 run- ners. Sue was the only varsity runner who competed in all of the meets. Pitted against the area’s number one team, St. Joseph, the Cats succumbed 91-47. However this is the first time in school history that a Bedford Basketball team has reached the Regionals. Midway thru the season Coach Kennedy talked to the players and said, “You can be as good as you want to be.” And in explaining the second half turnaround he commented, The big difference is that the players, in addition to working hard, now believe in themselves and began to play with consistency.” Bedford finished fourth in the G.C.C. losing three games by a total of five points. Their strength in the league was exemplified in the fact that they beat both league leader Euclid - ranked 2nd in the city - as well as G.C.C. runner-up Mayfield. The team’s leading scorer was 6-1 senior forward Darren Cooper who averaged 18 points per game. At one guard was 6-1 senior Mark Massey who averages 12 points. “He takes on the responsibility of 'floor general’ out on the court,” said Ken- nedy. Tory Rollins, a 6-3 forward-center was the team’s leading three point shooter, averaging 12 points per game and his rebounding being a key in the tournament success. Leighton McCoy, a 6-2 junior, did not shoot much, but was a standout in both the rebounding and free-throw departments. In the district title victo- ry over Shaw, he hit on 11 of 15 foul shots. Keith Sizemore was the other back court player and the junior was a stan- dout on defense. Sam Dickerson, a 6-6 junior, and first substitute added both scoring and rebounding. Wright natatorium there is a showcase which periodically displays these constant efforts to excel. Inside the coaches’ of- fices there are not just one, but several team pictures labeled “G.C.C. Cham- pions,” the most recent 1985-86. The natatorial record is dominated by Bedford swimmers and is frequently changed, displaying the hardwork and dedication of our aquatic students. Morning practices, some beginning as early as 6:05 in an unheated pool also show the efforts of dedicated team- work, illustrating that swimming is more than just an after school sport. Bedford High School has a tradi- tion in winning and that tradition in the swim team. The swim team, de- spite the fact that this was the fourth head coach in four years, has faithful- ly kept its tradition by finishing sec- ond in the Greater Cleveland Confer- ence. Highlights include beating close rival Euclid this year. Mentor, which has never been strong in the G.C.C., turned out to be more of an obstacle than anticipated. The swim team has a tradition of winning. High expectations, hard work, dedication, and past examples to follow have made our swim team immensely successful over the years. Where is the enthusiasm and support for this WINNING team? Congratulations on another out standing year! SWIMMING 95 ’TALENTED’ GIRLS SWIM TO SECOND PLACE IN The Girls’ Varsity swim team had an outstanding year. They won all but one of their Conference meets, finish- ing a strong second in the G.C.C. The Girls were again the overall team champions in the Lions Relays and triumphed over Euclid, winning the heated meet by two points. At the con- ference meet, however, the Girls were defeated by Mentor by another two points, just missing the co-champions title. At the Conference meet, the squad of Julie Presby, Lisa Gillen, Kathy Ambroziak and Jenny Balogh swam a strong second in the Medley Relay. Kathy Ambroziak placed first in the 100 yd. Butterfly and second in the 100 yd. Backstroke while Nicole Ur- ban placed fifth in the 100 yd Frees- tyle. In the 400 yd. Freestyle Relay, Jenny Balogh. Lynn DeLuca, Lisa Gillen, and Nicole Urban took fourth place. Lisa Gillen displays interesting breathing techniques during the 100M breastrokc. The team was led by seniors Kathy Ambroziak, Nicole Urban, Gina Mir- acle, Cindy Mazer and Jeannie Dun- kel. As head coach Mike Madden stat- ed, “The girls’ team had a lot of talent in it, a big part of its success came from some new freshmen and some senior swimmers who came back after taking a year off.” VARSITY GIRLS' SWIMMING B.H.S. He accre- dited their conference standing to their hard work and enthusiasm. The boys went undefeated in the Greater Cleveland Conference and only lost three meets to teams outside of their conference. All of the boys swam their best times this year and some cases swam better than I ever expect- ed,” said Madden. The boys won against Mentor in a dual meet, but yielded to them at the Conference meet. “In the end the team ran into a game of numbers in which Mentor came out on top, but only because they had more people on the team to score points in the conference meet.” Seniors Shawn Berry, Chad Bryant, Matt Gerwin, Rick Jewett, Rob Prather, and Steve Rzeszut led the team to the co-champion title. The overall record was 15 wins and 13 losses, while the conference record was an even split; seven wins and sev- en losses. We lost to Holy Name in the Sectional Finals 10-9. Holy Name then went on th the State Finals in Columbus. John Moore recieved the Eagles Award, and was named to the All G.C.C. team and played in the Greater Cleveland All-Star game after finishing a three year varsity career with a .335 batting average. Mark Woodard and Mark Massey also par- ticipated in the Cleveland All-Star game following in the footsteps of their Coach R. LoefTler, who played in the first All-Star game in 1958, as a senior from Bedford High. Junior Chris Benny had a fine season win- ning four games with a 3.07 ERA. Matt Blackburn lead the team in hit- ting with a .396 average. Foreign ex- change student Akira Takayama learned to hit American Pitching fin- ishing with a.315 batting average and doing a good defensive job at third base. Lack of hitting and team speed plagued the girls this year who finished with a 2 - 12 record. The end of the season marked the end of a three year varsity career for co-cap- tains Juli Metz and Nicole Urban. Both girls will be missed next year. The core for next years team should include LeAnn Cumley, Karen Hol- derman, Megan Tulloch, and Terri Korzekwa. All four girls were starters this year. Much work is needed for next year, but Coach Bistritz is confi- dent the girls want to and will im- prove their record. GIRLS' VARSITY SOFTBALL FRONT ROW: Nicole Urban. Ronna Hurtuk, Jeannic Dunkcl. VARSITY SOFTBALL 103 LADYCATS TRACK The Ladycats were twice blessed this season with a large number of tal- ented underclassmen, as well as a small, but dedicated, experienced and skilled contingent of senior track vet- erans. Nika Newsome, Kim Drayton, and Lisa Harris led the running events, while Helena Spry and Pam Bouyer set a good example in the field events for the 12 juniors and sopho- mores and 16 freshmen who contrib- uted to this year’s varsity track squad. Hampered by poor spring weather and track conditions, the ladycats suf- fered through the 1st half of the sea- son with a 1-3 record. As our spring weather heated up, so did the Lady- cats’ performances, as they bounced back in the 2nd half of the season to even their dual meet record at 4 - 4, and finishing 4th at the G.C.C. meet. In the conference meet alone, 23 “Red Dot,” or personal record perfor- mances, were made in a single day! The season didn’t end here, how- ever, Kim and Nika blew by their dis- trict and regional competitors and earned a trip to Columbus for the State Meet. These two 4 year track athletes represented B.H.S with dis- tinction, and were perfect examples of the dedication, hard-work, and disci- pline that must always be the founda- tion for successful Ladycat track squads. Larry led the team with a total of 130 points followed by Chris with 89 points. The team was comprised of a nice mixture of veterans and rookies. A total of 14 seniors who were on the team for three or more years provided leader- ship and stability to the team. Twen- ty-eight newcomers to the Bedford track program, 22 of which lettered, added to the stmgth of the team and a nucleus for a strong track program in the next several years. Coach Kimber- ly commented: “This was the largest and most talented group of freshmen and sophomores since the class of’85 which went undefeated.” High points of the season were a 2nd place finish in the Hendrick’s Re- lays at Cuyahoga Falls; dual meet vic- tories over South, North, Mayfield, and Maple; a 4th place finish in the G.C.C.; and a 6th place out of 16 teams in the Cleveland Hts. District Meet. Other outstanding perfor- mances that highlighted the season were Conference and District Champ Chris Hicks in the shot put, the Con- ference and District Champion 400 meter relay team of Chuck Bailey, Rob Grider, Robin Duckworth, and Larry Smith, and Regonal qualifiers Rob Grider in the 100, and Larry Smith in the 200. The 400 relay team posted the best time in the Cleveland area and one of the top in the state, and looks forward to a return trip the the state finals in Columbus. BOYS’ TRACK B.H.S.
