ASSISTANT EDITOR EDITOR . . . Solly Smith Corol Yavorsky ARTIST . . . Charlotte Giuntr BUSINESS MANAGER . . . Chris Deevers PHOTOGRAPHER . . . Howard Cihak Baroque is a style of art or architecture, irregular in form, characterized by the use of curved and contorted figures. With the assistance of our school rulers,” we form varied fields of inter- est in education and extra-curricular activities. . . . Offering invaluable knowl- edge, books help us curve our thoughts and ideas into constructive and worth- while purposes. . . . The gavel symbolizes student leadership of our many clubs. . . . Representing a striking” athletic department, the bat and ball portray our six main sports. . . . And the graduation cap shapes the last year for seniors at Bedford High School, for 1962-63. We hope the contorted forms of Baroque will recall memories and become more meaningful as they revolve around the Baroque-contorted clock of 1963. e of Contents The Baroque Era Faculty and Administration Underclassmen 2-10 11-26 27-56 57-76 Organizations Athletics Seniors Patrons and Boosters Index 77-100 101-133 134-136 137-143 2 3 On September sixth Bedford streets buzzed with boosters as our Buck for the Bearcat teams canvassed the area to raise money for our athletic department. This was the kickoff in spirit that prevailed throughout the season. Football games were the highpoint of each week and were attended by the students in rain, sleet, and snow. After the home games, dances were held in our cafeteria; here, after a victory we celebrated, or after defeat, danced our blues away. Homecoming, the climax of the season, will never be forgotten. As the football players walked off the field for the last time, the music of our marching band faded away and football season was over. Our band music was transformed into dance music in girls’ minds as they decided which boy to ask to the Harvest Hop. Soon the night of the dance arrived, and our cafeteria was adorned with emerald decorations, streamers, and pumpkins. Pumpkins! It was Halloween time — time for witches and goblins. But the seniors know it wasn’t a witch or goblin who had fun painting the rock in the park and more fun washing it off ... 4 Our school went Oriental as the Friendship Club play Lost Horizons was presented. The scene was the exotic land of Shangri-la where time slows down and life is prolonged. But time sped at a fast pace in Bedford as Thanksgiving swung into view and gave us a chance to show our gener- osity by providing food baskets for needy families. The short Thanksgiving vacation was enjoyed by all students, faculty, and administration. Everyone came back rested, refreshed, and well-fed. After vacation the cheerleaders held the traditional hoop as the mighty Bearcats broke through the ring and bounced into basketball season. As the cork was pulled from our spirit jug, spirit rushed out creating an atmos- phere of excitement. More baskets were made and points were compiled as the season soared on. Our league-leading Bearcats continued to remain on top of the totem pole of teams as the season drew to a fast-paced close. . . . 5 Tender moments at the Christmas Formal. Closed! School was closed for four whole days as win- ter weather played a trick on Mr. Heskett. Next came Christmas vacation, but there was still excitement and anti- cipation as visions of formals (not sugar plums) danced through girls’ heads. The Christmas Formal finally arrived and fulfilled all expectations. Soft fluffy formals floated like dancing snowflakes over the floor amidst the Key Club decorations. A warm, homey fireplace added to the Christ- mas atmosphere, and the Christmas tree in the center of the floor completed the holiday gaiety. All good things must come to an end, and the Christmas festivities termi- nated as school re-opened. Exams were soon upon us, and it was hard to believe the year was half over. What a way to end January — exams, grades, and a lot more snow. . . Seniors caught in contemplation during government exam. y . . . . Follow the yellow brick road. The faculty, accompanied by Friendship mem- bers, followed this road as they explored the Many Shades of Friendship.” They were in search of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow at the Friendship Club Tea. To help the faculty swing into the mood of the theme, entertainment was presented including the vocal version of Over the Rainbow.” This annual Tea is an excellent way for students to become better acquainted with the faculty. February, the month of hearts and flowers in honor of St. Valentine, was also the time for Dog Patch,” the Sophomore Class Party which preceded the Senior’s Party, Dreamland,” held at the turn of the month. Thus February, a short but active month came to an end. Senior Play Cast — Row 1: Carole Lockwood, Mrs. Kelley - Adviser, Tim Dodds, Sally Smith, Barb Hrach, Bill Kaczynski, Leigh Orrill, Rich Stanovich; Row 2: Jayne Motsinger, John Barbena, Lenore Karpiak, Corliss Tay lor, Ken Flick, Suzanne Kulik, Rita Berry, Chita Tanch oco, Jim Poulson; Row 3: Patsy Dickson, Jim Zahand Ellen Simione, Dick Hora, Elaine Ugulini, Dave Nofzi ger, Chris Jakubecz, Dave Wheeler, Betty Gott. . . . What egg-zactly was the effect of the Senior Class Play, The Egg and I”? The effect was hilarious and resulted in a successful comedy. The audience rolled with laughter as the McDon- ald family moved from their city home with all the modern conveniences, to an old-fashioned chicken ranch. The McDonalds, their neighbors Delicate Daisy and Mr. Mannic Depressive, Fish- face the Indian, and a host of other characters performed an egg-ceptional play production. The juniors, with effervescent enthusiasm and vivid imagination, swirled us back in time to the continent of Africa for our prom, the setting be- ing the mystical land of Egypt. For the seniors, it was the last big event before graduation. We en- joyed the peaceful scene along the Nile, so artis- tically created by the hard-working Junior Class. 8 Industrious juniors prepare for prom, 'Kimet. With April showers came recognition of our scholars. These students with qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character were inducted into National Honor Society. This im- pressive program also served as an incentive and goal for underclassmen. In May, senior awards were presented to those seniors who excelled in various school subjects, athletics, and other fields. This assembly was a hint of the fast approaching graduation. For the sophomores and juniors another year is completed and vacation is the reward. Come next September we will be back at Bedford. But for the seniors, our life at Bedford is ended with graduation. The seniors solemnly march down the aisle, and walk across the stage for long awaited diplomas which are received with mixed emotions. These diplomas represent the end of the seniors’ high school days and a key to a new future. 9 FACULTY The Rulers’ of Bedford High construct the guiding lines that form the basis of our future voca- tions. The teachers sometimes toil over a foot of preparation and teaching in order for students to gain an inch of knowledge. How- ever, with our faculty’s patience and interest, we have gained an immeasurable amount of experi- ence which will benefit us in fu- ture years at home or at work. ADMINISTRATION Bedford City Schools have met the grow- ing needs of the school district, and its in- creasing enrollment through the efforts of our capable administrative staff. Dale D. Heskett, Superintendent, together with As- sistant Superintendent Frank H. Brown, and William Dillard, Director of Secondary Ed- ucation, administer the various affairs of a thriving, growing school district. . . . DALE D. HESKETT Muskingum College B.S. The Board of Education is responsible for policy, budgets, buildings, bonds, etc., in running the school system. As the school year ends and most of the faculty breathe a sigh of relief, the work is just beginning for our principal W. A. Vorlicky and the assistant principal W. W. Shipley. The smooth operation of Bedford Schools is partly at- tributable to the skills of administration and high school secretaries. This efficient group of women put forth great effort so that the paper work will show the results of ed- ucational effort. The maintenance of our buildings is a very important function in a school. Operation of auditorium lights, ad- justment of microphones, and cleaning of halls and class- rooms, are just a few of the jobs the custodians must per- form. A split lunch period enables all students to eat in our modern cafeteria. The pleasant aroma that seeps thru the doors of the cafeteria into classrooms during the morn- ing hours, indicates that the cafeteria staff is hard at work. is GLEN E. BOTDORF: B.S. We have written pages filled with memories and experiences. All our stories are different, with numerous plots, varied moods and feelings, and different accomplishments. None of the characters are alike for we have separate ambitions, goals, and interests. Each of us plays a part in our school life whether it be a leading or supporting role. Our pages, chapters, and titles are diversified, but the setting and the scene are the same — the 1962-63 school year at Bedford. The eighty-four upperclassmen in membership, under the direction of Mr. Thomas Shellhammer, combine talent and diligent effort to attain the high level of accomplishment we enjoyed during their various performances. The choir was heard in the thrilling Christmas Concert, the National Honor Soci- ety Induction, Spring Sing, at Baccalaureate and Com- mencement. Selections by the A Cappella Choir were broadcast on Cleveland’s WJW radio in March of this year. Leading this active group were these officers: Margie Foreman, President; Karen Taylor, Vice President; Suz- anne Bella, Secretary; and Ken Flick, Treasurer. A Cappella members qualify to audition for ensembles, one of which is the Madrigal Singers. These ten students performed with exceptional finesse at numerous engage- ments. The Madrigal Group also had the opportunity to appear on television on the Mike Douglas Show during the Christmas season. The six young ladies in Girls’ Sextette are also chosen from choir on the basis of an audition of voice quality and blend. Providing fine entertainment for all, these vocal groups are an attribute of Bedford Senior High School. In six days these high-stepping musicians, under the direction of Mr. Du Vail, created the precision routines you saw before the kick-off and at half-time. Home- coming ceremonies acquired traditional splendor from its superb performance. The annual candy sale helped provide money for uniforms and music, with the Band Parents lending a helping hand. ATHLETICS We passed first base, surpassed second, and swung around third to come through with a homerun — the Bearcats score again. Yes, the score went up another notch, yea team! No hurdle was too tall for our team to overcome. We pinned our opponents with effort and made a touchdown in team- work. This spirit was also re- flected in the stands as we backed our Bearcats win, lose, or draw. FOOTBALL From the 90 degree heat of mid-August afternoons to the cold, wet evenings of November, football was king at Bedford High. Starting the season with two victories in three games, the Bearcats hoped for a championship team as they played their first conference game against Maple Heights. In a driving rain and a sea of mud the Cats’ offense stalled, enabling Maple to walk off with a 28-2 victory. The following week, our Homecoming game, Dayton Wilbur Wright defeated Bedford 2-0. Once again foul weather covered the field with haze as the dreams of a champion- ship began to fade. The next three outings found the Bearcats un- able to mark up a conference victory. Despite this year’s disappointing record, spirit is already ris- ing for next season. Returning sophomores and juniors ar , deter- mined to touch up” on touchdown performance and get on top. For the first time since the sport came to Bedford, the Cross Country team blanked the opponents, this year achiev- ing the feat twice. Physical fitness being the ultimate goal of our physical education depart- ment, boys were kept on their toes with calisthen- ics, seasonal sports, tumbling, and an intra-class wrestling tournament. Boys’ leaders assisted gym teachers with responsible student direction. This year’s crown is shared with Eastlake North, who fought for Bearcat stew after their first loss to us with three overtimes in the game. They edged a close 49-47 victory over Bedford in our last con- ference For the second consecutive year, the Saturday night blues continued to haunt Coach Rose’s cagers. Three of the five season losses came on Saturday eves, dimming an otherwise glowing sea- son record of 11 wins, 5 losses. VARSITY WRESTLING The 1963 squad of Bedford grapplers gained a split- level 5-5 record. Losses in tough matches with Cleveland Heights and St. Joseph after three successive wins put the team on the skids. The mid-season losing streak reached four meets before the victory drought was ended with a 36-5 conquest of Midpark. We ended the season with a conference win against Berea, 22-13. Two conference champs starred on this year’s squad: co-champ Tom Bogucki, a sophomore in the 112-pound class; and Jim Smith, senior heavyweight. The coach is Mr. G. Beshara. Although compiling only a mediocre season record of 8 wins, 8 losses, this year’s team showed every indication of blossoming into a title con- tender next year. Lack of experience hurt the squad on many occasions this year as the Sox learned that it takes runs to win a ball game. The pitching staff, questionable at the season’s begin- ning, proved to be the main bright spot as it came up with many fine efforts only to be defeated by the lack of offensive power. Six returning starters plus strong pitching should put Bedford on top. Lack of offensive punch caused Greensox losses. TRACK Following a championship season is no easy task, but was one which Coach Robert Stabile was happy to accept. The undefeated squad of 1961 hit the high point in recent track history and was bolstered by many outstanding seniors. Their departure left a spirited, but undermanned, squad. Working hard, and hopeful of another top year, the squad struggled through a tough schedule. Finishing with a two-win, seven-loss record the team was unable to do as well as it had hoped, but did gain valuable experience. Spirit among the tracksters is still high and returning lettermen allow for a pleasant outlook for the year 1963. Rich Johnson thrusts shot-put. Experience gained by trackmen despite record. The termi- nation of this season is also the time for the senor class to loosen its roots and look to a flourishing future. Our senior class now leaves the teachers, underclass- men, clubs, and athletics of Bed- ford High. We’ve gained a firm foundation for the future, and have great expectations. We are proud to wear the graduation caps of 1963. Senior Class Officers: Charlotte Giunti, Secretary; Ed DePompei, Treasurer; Miss Siegel, Adviser; Chris Dcevers, Class President Nikki Maggio, Vice-President Nikki Maggio Edward DePompei Our years at Bedford have drawn to a close. For some, the years crept along, but for others they seemed to fly. Regardless, our vast reservoir of experiences mounted. In the tenth grade we were officially initiated into the sophomore class by crawling under the rope. Next we ordered and proudly displayed our class rings. We then poured our enthusiastic energy into our junior-senior prom Brigadoon.” Time swept along as we whirled through our senior year. Thus graduation has come, but . . . ’'May we always keep our memories As a treasure of the past And our lives bring honor to thee When we’ve reached our goals at last.” James Alexander k Margaret Anderson 102 Chris Deevcrs Charlotte Giunti Carol Adamcek Glenda Arnold T H E C L A S 5 0 F 1 9 6 3 Diane Balogh Suzanne Bella Charles Beshara Stanley Bieliclci Rita Berry 103 James Bulanda Carlton Buck Sandra Cash man Terry Byrne dim William Cameron Linda Comiskey Richard Carlson Patricia Daniels Robert Carpenter 104 s E N I O R H A L L O F F A M E Gloria Gallese Timothy Dodds HALL OF FAME Candidates for the 1963 Hall of Fame were selected by a group of teachers on the basis of character and service to the school. He has excelled in basketball and baseball, and participates in Var- sity B activities. Eddie is a prominent figure in the Senior Class and is considered Mr. Person- ality-plus by both male and female admirers. 107 PATRICIA NAVARRA Pac is quiet, considerate, and content. We soli-, cited patrons, composed copy, pounded typewriters, did paste- ups, and worried about ever-pressing deadlines, wondering if we could possibly finish before Christmas of 1963! Somehow, by combining frustrations, late hours, hard work, and the fun and comradeship that come with them, we completed our 1963 yearbook on time and in high Baroque style.
