Vern Sablotny Ray Gliha John Moore FOOT BALL August 20th the coaching staff welcomed a group of football candidates whose inexperience was offset by their enthusiasm. In a preseason preview the team held Lakewood, the Lake Erie League champions, to a scoreless tie. Opening the schedule Ravenna and Mentor cooled the Bearcats enthusiasm with second-half defeats. John Hay proved to be our only victim. The colorful homecoming festival paled and faded in the rain as Garfield won the first con- ference game. Injuries to key experienced personell and the evident lack of experience caused the collapse which resulted in four more league game losses. The coupe-de-grace was administered by the Berea Braves, who in the last game of the season, cinched their championship and handed the Bearcats their worst defeat. One hope for next year is that the large group of boys who weathered the storm and have one or more years to play: the second hope is a fine group of boys from the freshmen team.
