Our purpose has been to portray you at work and at play, thereby enabling you to re-live these events in your school life. We feel that our annual has caught the spirit and sparkle of our new school. Therefore, we have chosen the theme, The Forward Look in the Shadow of Tradition. We, the seniors, give to you our dreams and our traditions of the past, knowing that you will fulfill the aspirations we have begun. Our good wishes go with this book. HOWARD For your untiring efforts to produce a sense of fair play and sportsmanship among young people 5 For producing the backbone of school spirit 5 For your desire to build up the minds and bodies of future generations, For your expert academic instruction, And in admiration and respect for your example of firmness Without harsh- ness and friendship Without familiarity, A We, the Class of 1958, do dedicate this, the first edition of the Bluefield High School Beaver , to you, COACH A. T. HOWARD. 5 FACULTY Our teachers, who carry on the tradition of our high school's past, work daily to give us the knowledge of years gone by and the training needed for the years to come. In the English department we find Miss Lec Fretwell, our assistant principal, busy with her business English classes, Her students are always eager to have some seeds of knowledge imparted to them. We'll have our spelling words now since you don't need the time to study them, we hear Mrs. Mary Wellman say as we pass room 111. Mrs. Wellman teaches the seniors the do's and don'ts of grammar as well as the Shakespeare's and Chaucer's of Eng- lish literature we have all come to know, even if not to love. Room 110 is the scene of many activities. It is here that Miss Mary Winter teaches her English classes, sponsors the Na- tional Honor Society, and helps coach the annual. This year our school takes on the forward look'l as we initiate many new teachers into our school program. The English department gained Miss Mary Blankenship who has sophomore classes and who also sponsors the annual, and Mrs. Mary McDaniels whose room on the second floor already promises to become a center for English classes. The instruction in ,languages is placed entirely in the hands of three teachers - Miss Katherine Gonano who brings Mexico alive with her teachings of Spanish, Miss Eleanor Jennings whose familiar Jacti gummum in corbula sunt, adds a little variety to the well- loveld tales of Julius Caesar, and Mrs. Margaret Pharr who draws France just a little closer to t e . S. Miss Ruth Bartlett is still producing the best cooks and the finest seamstresses around. All the girls are acquainted with Miss Jean Hamilton, their physical education director. Her stern teaching procedure has proved most successful in making all the girls physically fit. Mr. John Chmara teaches boys' physical education and world history. There goes Mr. Chmara, is the remark made daily by suddenly interested fans of world history. Mr, Bob Hedrick, also new to the high school this year, teaches business math and physical education besides help- ing to coach the football team. Mr. Ivan Repass is the head basketball coach and is the bravest man at school for he also teaches driver training. Our music department is in two sections-vocal, under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Shelton who makes Melody Magic one of the highlights of the year, and instrumental, undeg the guidance of Mr. Robert Wright who has made our band one of which we can be prou . Miss Margaret Honaker, who teaches business math, is one of the two additions to our math department. Also a newcomer is Mr. Millard Young who instructs plane and solid geom- etry. Mr. Robert Perry is still racing his algebra classes to see who can copy down a problem faster. This is also true of his physics classes. Tradition prevails in the science department as we continue to have an outstanding group of teachers in this field. Miss Ruth Smith teaches her biology classes among other things, the importance of knowing the anatomy of a frog. There is enough power in that explosive you're holding to blow up the entire school, is still the gentle reproof Mr. Fanning gives to all his chemistry students. Mr. E. G. Bailey is a very capable biology teacher and is also the bookkeeper of the Athletic Association. Mrs. Edytha Kercher puts the new light and airy art room to good use. Her effectiveness as an art teacher may be measured by the many excellent drawings in her room. Mrs. Ker- cher also teaches English. How now, brown cow ? can be heard outside Mrs. Mary Dean's speech class as she makes an effort to impress upon her students the importance of 'proper enunciation. The National Forensic League and the National Thespian Troupe are also under the leadership of Mrs. Dean, Miss Henrietta Bruce and Mrs. Virginia Smith use proper teaching measures to encour- age more speedy and efficient typing. Many a careless typer has been helped by the invaluable advice of these two teachers. Miss Mary Parmesano teaches business students typing and shorthand and takes an active part in all the activities of the school. Miss Louise Light enlightens her students in the subject of sociology and economics and provides a very interesting course for all who are required to take it. The South has never lost a battle when Mr. Howard, an American history teacher and the football coach, begins the study of the Civil War. Now sophomores, watch closely how to use the card catalogue. Every year a new group of sophomores is instructed in a special course on library usage and book care. The little lec- ture is given by our librarian, Mrs. Virginia Foglesong, who makes it a point to guard every book in the library with utmost care. Our Bible classes were in for a treat this year when they found their new teacher, Miss Carolyn Johnson, Miss Johnson's room is always open for guidance and counseling, and quite a few people profit from the help she gives daily. The Bible Club and morning devotions are also Linder the watchful eye of Miss Johnson. I4 Y Our tribute to the Board of Education who made possible our new building. 7 Mr. Lambert Arrington is our new principal, but he is really no new-comer to our school. He served as a coach on the faculty of Beaver High School from 1943 to 1950. He returned as principal this year, a job he has held in other parts of the county. Already he has made an impression on all of us who have come in contact with his com- petent leadership. In the little time he has been with us as our chief executive he has proved himself an able and Well qualified man, capable of handling the duties connected with his job. Mr. Arrington has Won wide popularity among the students, showing vvholehearted in- terest in each of us. Another quality We all admire is his ever-present smile and his natural friendliness toward everyone. His day is never too busy to prevent his Walking down the hall to mingle with the students. Yes, in the future, the up and coming classes of Bluefield High School are certain to be as fond of Mr. Arrington, as are we-the Classes of '58, '59, and '60, CUR PRINCIPAL Mr. Lambert Arrington 4 ,ff , , 9 ' ' , V zz, ,, ' 4 . In the years she has been with the administration of our school, she has done her duty Well, never forgetting the interests of the students under her guidance. Miss Fretwell is al- ways ready to lend a helping hand to anyone-confused sophomores, restless juniors, or over- anxious seniors. Her guidance and practical advice have, perhaps, endeared her to us more than anything else. It is she who watches our grades and activities to make sure that we're traveling the right road. It is to her that we take OUII unsolved problems and it is she who always solves them for us. Our years in high school, both Peaver and Bluefield, and our future in all fields of life are influenced by our friend and assistant principal, Miss Lec Fretwell. 9 -1 f 'Fig A Nw fit fi 'F Y' . OUR SECRETARY Miss Joyce Price, a graduate of Beaver, handles all the duties of the office secre- tary. Not only does she file grades, carry on the school's correspondence, work on seniors' transcripts, make announcements, and sell school suppliesg but she is a friend to all the students as well. It is our hope that the future students of Bluefield High School will have the opportunity to know and love Miss Price for many years to come. I 1-tis, it M , ,mm 'J This year our cafeteria is in good hands. Well- balanced meals, the result of careful planning have been the delight of our student body. We say thank you to the lunchroom Workers and Mrs. Edith Francis, for they have made ourcafeteria a pleasant and satisfying place to eat. I5 CLASSES When we, the seniors, entered high school we trudged up a long hill-to Beaver High. It looked pretty big to us that first day, for we were frightened. Once inside we were herded into the auditorium and found seats reserved for us on the shelf. Everyone seemed to be getting such a kick out of seeing us peep over that rail, wouldn't they have been surprised to learn just how much we enjoyed it too? There isn't one among us now who would not say those were the best seats in the house. Filled with spirit and resolved to be sophomores to the hilt, we yelled with fury at pep assemblies, attended en masse the football games, and weren't con- tent just to support the team here at home. We got on that bus and traveled to Welch and then we all swam back. Remember? Prim Priscillas, John Aldens, Y-Teens, F.T.A., F.N.A. soon began to realize that we were as valuable members and as hard workers as anybody else. Some of us joined the A Cappella Choir and such an experience that was! Remember those Melody Magic rehearsals and that trip to Pocahontas? We had a full-fledged cam- paign to elect sophomore class officers and they led us through the annual party. We stood on the balcony of the gym and looked in awe and wonder as once more, and only once more, the reigning royalty of Beaver was crowned in splendor and gaiety at a carnival in a Land of Dreams. On the last day of May we all looked in wonder as the dignity of the seniors crumbled before the aspect of leaving Beaver High School forever, It was just the end of another school year, our sophomore year- AND THE BAND PLAYED 'DIXIE' ! We became juniors, we had taken a step up the ladder. Now we could turn in our seats and display thumbs down at the balcony. Jumping right into the swing of things we elected officers for this was Hour Junior-Senior Prom. We sent our representatives to the Student Council and they looked vaguely familiar to each other. Some of our members played varsity football this year and our faculty gave it all a try, too. Remember Coach Elvis', as a cheer- leader- Our team is RED hotlv A part of us elected intermediate algebra for our schedules and barely came out aliveg some of us took chemistry and Mr. Fanning barely came out alive. We saw our names mentioned more often in the Chatterbox and the Beaver Press , we sang solos in Melody Magic this yearg we saw our names posted as having won parts in the Three One-Acts , we were a big part of Beaver High School. In the spring we worked all day at a rummage sale and then danced all night around a Carousel We sat with baited breaths as the National Honor Society members came into the audience with their unlighted candles, fourteen of the girls were given invitations to be on the Laurel Chain, and we began to sell boosters to be on the annual staff for the following year. We served seniors at the Senior reception and thought about next year at this time , we ushered at graduation exer- cises and saw ourselves made officially Seniors.'i The next fall term we were new seniors in a new building with a new name. The soph- omores began the year of assemblies on the ground floor, which gave upperclass dignity quite a blow. Now they too must sit out a term on the shelf. The juniors still resent hav- ing to wait for the seniors to leave the auditorium but we had to do it too, remember? We all had to be initiated into the cafeteria routine, and the seniors came out on top again, we were excused from class five minutes early to get in the lunch line. We had bonfires to work up steam for our ball games and one in particular built itself up into a Pep Parade. Sixty cars stuffed with loyal Beaverites wound their way around town shouting for Beaver to beat Princeton. The Tigers won the game but they could never beat us. We lived an exciting year filling all the offices and duties and accepting all the honors given members of a senior class. We were officers of the Student Council, we presented our beauty for the Homecom- ing, Queeng and a part of us were crowned and announced as Beaver royalty at the Spring Festival. We even ruled the city for a day on Student Government Day. At last, we were the stars of the Senior Class play, we were the honorees at the Senior reception. We chose calling cards and invitations for graduating exercises, we were fitted for caps and gowns, and we marched down the aisle. but this time the band played Pomp and Circum- stance. We learned that time honored procedure accept the diploma with the left hand and shake hands with the right and after we had pulled it off perfectly, we went out to celebrate. And so we leave-we see the 'Forward Look shining from the eyes of the Class of '60, we have noticed a Shadow of another school and another day on the countenance of the Class of '59g but we, the Class of '58, take with us our beloved Tradition,', the memories of two years at Beaver High School. Well, we certainly don't want any dull Beaverites, and so we have a Well-rounded schedule of clubs for those who are interested and willing to put forth a little effort. Do you really want to know why we lose sleep? It is probably because we took the gra- cious invitation extended to us at the beginning of the year and joined the Y-Teens, or perhaps, the Prim Priscillas, or the John Alden Club. Some of the boys may have written a good theme on the subject service and were accepted for membership in the Key Club, a service organ- ization sponsored by the Kiwanis International. For anyone who is athletically minded, there is the Boys' Beaver B , or the Girls' Athletic Association, and for those girls who work especially hard, there is the Girls' Beaver B , For service above and beyond the call of duty and for scholastic achievement, a per- centage of the senior class is voted into the National Honor Society. From this membership is chosen a committee to put out the Chatter Box, a single sheet of Beaver news that no one would dare miss. The Beaver Band and the A Cappella Choir are our two outstanding musical organiza- tions. The friendships and the interests formed during one's membership in either of them is certainly worth all the hard work put into their performances. They are both well-known through out the community for their fine work and perform for many activities, both in school and out. With an eye to the ever-present future one may join the Future Teachers Club, or the Future Nurses Club, or the Future Engineers Club. Each of them provides excellent voca- tional guidance plus interesting activities and trips. Membership in the National Quill and Scroll is the reward for those with a special talent for writing and editing. We think maybe everyone would like to belong to the National Thespian Society, an honorary society for those taking parts in the productions at the Beaver Theatre , for who hasn't imagined an Oscar-winning actor or actress on any stage? And for those who can calmly get up to make an interesting speech, there is the National Forensic League. The Latin Club, or Junior Classical League, and the French Club serve to further enlighten their members on the culture, the history, and the tradition of the peoples whose language they study. If you attended the Bible Club meeting this year you were informed on a great many interesting subjects. You might have heard a discussion of the various religions or the stand of the Christian world takes on the complex problems of fascist government or even a Christian outlook on morals and principles. Any problem you might have will gladly be dis- cussed and maybe even solved at a meeting of the Bible Club. We even have a system of student government-the Student Council. Everyone in school is well represented and all complaints and suggestions are carefully aired at its meetings. So, you see, we are busy Beavers here at Bluefield High School. sz ORGANIZATIONS 1 '15, The Student Council Officers are Raymond Mariotti, treasurerg Phyllis Webb, secretary Judith Bressler, vice-presidentg and Bill Cole, president. 53 THE STUDENT COUNCIL Left Row Row Row bmp, to Right: 1: Kathy Arney, Rebecca Holt, Shelby Davis, Hope Crickmer, Phyllis Webb, Norvell St. Clair, Patty Edmonds, Judith Bressler 2: Doug Katz, Judd Sutherland, Gayle Sisson, Peggy Tucker, Stuart Graham, Emily Siko, Betty Nelson, Patty Borden, Jerry Milchin, Bill Cole 3: Raymond Mariotti, Jim Henderson, Bill Noell, Zan Campbell, Tom Murphey, Jerry Helms, Wayne Booth, Stanley Smeltzer, Pete Belcher, absent when picture was taken, Bobbie Gage To belong to a Student Council is known as one of the greatest honors one can receive during his school days. It is through this organization that each pupil in the school is represented. To be this repre- sentative is a grave responsibility. This year the Council was instrumental in bring- ing about the success of the Open House held to acquaint our community with the new facilities of our building. Some members served as guides through the school while others were busy outside, coping with the parking problem brought on by close to one thousand visitors. We also helped to establish the Student Council organization at Central Junior High School. The Second-hand Bookstore was operated by the Council and it also furnished student announcers for the public address system, as it has done in the years past. The 4'Beaver Chest program this year was high- lighted by speakers from our community represent-' ing the various organizations to which we contribute. This seemed a busier year than ever for the ituiilent Council and its faculty sponsor, Miss Louise ig t. Y' 1 THE NATIONAL THESPIANS The National Forensic League and the National Thespian Society are both sponsored by Mrs. Mary Dean, head of the speech department. The National Forensic League has been organized at our school since 1930 and the many trophies in the cases will attest to the fine record maintained throughout the years. To become a member, one must earn thirty points as figured by Forensic standards. The chief function of the club is to send represen- tatives to the Forensic Congresses held each year. This year, at the Elizabethton, Tennessee Congress, two of our speech team members presided as chair- men for the houses. The National Forensics also represent Bluefield High School at speech tourna- ments throughout West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. The National Thespian Society is the honorary drama society organized since 1929, which makes it one of the oldest clubs here at school. Members must have worked on production for at least two one-act plays or have participated in the same number of presentations. The Thespians sponsor the Three One-act Plays presented each year. Seniors, juniors, and sophomores are eligible to try out for parts in these plays and all performances are equally enjoyed. THXGWH 'MV The Bluefield High School Band is one of the best known musical organizations in this area and is well publicized through their excellent work at all football games in the fall, and the orchestral work at all basketball games during the spring of the year. They were on hand at the dedication of the Bluefield Post Office this year and they furnished the music for the Wel- come Home celebration for Junior Miss America , Phyllis Whitenack. The band is under the able direction of Mr. Robert Wright. To finance their trip, this summer the band sold personalized toothbrushes and delicious chocolate candy. They also held the annual Tag Day along with other bands in this area. They certainly are an important pa-rt of our school life and spirit. THE FUTURE ENGINEERS OF AMERICA 60 The Y-Teen organization at Bluefield High is one of the most active. Membership is open to any girl enrolled in the school and usually includes a large percentage of the enrollment. One of its standard activities is the Potato Chip Sale each spring. This year the proceeds from the sale went toward a Y-Teen room in the proposed YW and YM building to be constructed in the near future. We have the honor of being the first group to contribute. At the spring convention in Norfolk, Virginia, Scarlett Davis served as executive secretary for this year, and Stuart Graham was elected for that position for the coming year. In the latter part of this month the choir holds a clinic, at the Trinity Methodist Church, to prepare for the strenuous season ahead. The early fall months are taken up with assembly programs, presented here at school. Some of the most enjoyable times of all come when Various choir members teach the student body fun songs. 1.1 1 t V Q0 18 nw swf' X -.J 1 Patricia Sinkford, Paulette Mitchell, Delores Driscol, Judie Gilmer, Susan Dodd, Nancy Brown, Mary Frances Horgan, Sue Elsner, Melba Morehead, Robert Owens, Jordan. Members are kept busy for weeks, learning the music, finding the props, and getting together the costumes. After Melody Magic come the special Thanksgiving and Christmas programs, And in the spring the County Music Festival and the Choir's own spring concert. The expert and energetic director behind all these activities is Miss Elizabeth Shelton. ll Accompanists, Loleta Johnson, Janice Ken slnger, Patty Jo Edmonds ACTIVITIES One almost can't help going to school for three years and not become interested in at least one activity. But there are those who find themselves interested and participating in almost all of them! We have an honor for those people here at Bluefield High, the Who's Who at Beaver. And so we have introduced our Activities,' section of the book with a picture of those students. The selection of Who's Who is sponsored by the Student Council and is based on a point system set up by that body. Susan, Banks, and Judith are exemplary of the many activities which a Beaverite may join and for which a Beaverite may work. The Homecoming Activities this year were delayed and postponed because of the Asian flu and the West Virginia weather until we got down to the last game of the season. But then it was carried off in the best of traditions of glamour and mystery. The candidates were voted upon by the football team, varsity and junior varsity, and the presentation of the queen was made by Prin- cipal Lambert Arrington. This year's Home- coming Queen was Miss Patti Murphey, and her attendants were the Misses Patty White and Phyllis Webb. It's the best show I can remember in all the years I've seen it. It was really a big, big musical this year. Those were the comments made upon seeing the 1957 version of Melody Magicf' It was bigger and better and proved the hard work of Miss Shelton and her devoted A Cappella Choir. There were many senior tears shed for the occasion, this being their last, and many exultations on the part of juniors and sophomores, having been a success in their first production. The annual staff this year had a tremen- dous job - financing the yearbook. They spent one entire day contacting the business- men of Bluefield, Graham, and Princeton for advertisements in the annual, and many an afternoon and Saturday went into the job also. But there were good times too, for example, when they had their party for having gotten 31,000 worth of ads in one week. That just shows how hard they all worked. This year the radio program Time for Beaver was moderated by two students and was a lively show each week. There was always a studio full of guests, and they provided many interesting sound effects, like that merry Ho, Ho, Ho at Christmas time. We all got right into the swing of politics when the Student Council announced the or- ganization of Student Government Day. Candidates were nominated by petition and each was given a chance to view his ideas in an assembly held for them previous to the election. There were going to be quite a few changes made and all the nominees, of course, thanked their friends', for their thunder- ous ovation. And then in the spring of the year came the chance for some of the seniors to really shine for all their hard work in the three years past. The annual staff announced the election of ten Beaver Citizens, chosen for their outstanding citizenship in school and community. The Prim Priscillas, the John Aldens, and the Y-Teens sponsored the elec- tion of thirty-seven Second Milers, the reward for service above and beyond the call of duty. Nancy Jean Wilkinson brought speech glory to the school when she won the I Speak for Democracy contest and brought us the beautiful trophy now in our case. Patty Jo Edmonds, Steve Dixon, and Jane Harrington put themselves in the national scholastic limelight winning a National Merit Scholarship. And it was Jane who entered national competition for the Betty Crocker Search for the Homemaker of Tomorrow. We sent seven of our rising juniors to Jack- son's Mill this summer to participate in the annual Boys' and Girls' State camps. But it was Miss Phyllis Ann Whitenack who really put us on the map by coming home from the Azalea Trails Festival in Mobile, Alabama, with the title of Junior Miss America. And of course, there were many others, the D.A.R. Citizenship Award to an out- standing senior girl, the announcement of the literary works being published in Laurel Leaves, the presentation of the Sports- manship Medal given by the G.A.A.-Beaver B's for the example of good conduct and sportsmanship shown by a senior girl. All these make up a part of our happy three years in high school and we, the seniors, hope that others may take the same interest and work as hard as we did on all the activities. ACTIVITIES - .. ,. Howard's team, playing for the first time under the title, Bluefield High School Beavers, felt the effects of the 1957 graduation. Lacking experience and weight, it was all the Beavers could do to hold their own in their games let alone, win them. When the season ended we had won over Welch, tied with Graham, and lost our other seven games. The Beavers roster boasted eleven seniors, this number included backs, Banks Hudson and Jim Jarrett, center, Scott Honakerg guard, Henry Haw- thorne, end, Larry Eaton, and tackles, Howard Belcher and Morgan Moore. Seventeen juniors went out for the team this year, some of them playing varsity football for the second consecu- tive year. Outstandingly good football was played by backs, Ronnie Lovell, Jim Honaker, and Judd Sutherland, guards, Bob Harry and Ronald Mariotti 5 center, Jerry Milching end, George Simons 5 and tackle, Lewis Caldwell. Some sophomores who showed prom- ising gridiron skill were backs, Bill Kinser, Doug Katz, Steve Wantling, Jabo Williams, John Walker, and Butch Farley. This year the schedule presented some new challengers to the Beavers football team. We played Logan and Matewan for the first time. And our game with the traditional foe the Beckley Flying Eagles was cancelled because of the flu, which plagued the area teams this year and caused many games to be cancelled or postponed. Basketball got off to the traditional start with the Alumni game, played during the Christmas holidays. The loss must have set a precedent, for the season ended with 5 wins and 17 losses for the Beavers, The varsity basketball team this year included only four second year men, Ronnie Young, Larry Eaton, Ray- mond Mariotti, and Bob Jewell. The other Beavers were George Simons, Jerry Stanley, Larry Graham, Zan Campbell, Doug Katz, Bill Kinser, and E. J. Morris. Coach Ivan Repass was assisted by the two new physical education direc- tors, John Chmara and Robert Hedrick. The track season had not gotten underway when the yearbook went to press and so the few shots we have are of those men that Mr. Howard feels Will be representing the school in this event. Also in the spring, a sportsman's fancies turn to baseball. The Beavers will be coached this year by Mr. Repass and Mr. Chmara. A lot of interest has been expressed in this sport and we are looking forward to a good record set by Bluefield High School's baseball club.
