PATERICK, ADVISER 3 gil. mn, ---- l have a special announcement at this time. How many times have students and faculty heard this statement coming over the P. A. System near the end of a class period? lt is perhaps the most familiar statement uttered by Mr. Linn, our principal. Coming to Beaver High School as principal in the fall of 1943 climaxed for Mr. Linn a long career as teacher and principal in the Beaver School System. After graduating from Grove City College in 1924 he took up duties in Monaca High School as a social studies teacher. He moved to Beaver in 1927 in the same capacity. ln his first year here he also acted as Senior sponsor. After several years in the high school he was transferred to the iunior high school, then located in the Ft. Mclntosh Building, and stepped into the role of principal. When the depression made it necessary to close the Market St. Building and move the ninth grade to the high school-Mr. Linn came too-as assistant to the principal, Miss Mary McKinley. Several years later he was again sent to the Mclntosh Building as principal where he re- mained until his election as high school principal in the summer of 1943. ln the meantime he had continued his advanced edu- cation and had received a M. Ed. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. During these years he has worked constantly for the better- ment of the educational program, the curricula, school spirit, and every phase of high school life. Education is a very serious busi- ness with him as shown by his sincere statement of regret when a boy or girl decides to leave school before completing his high school course. Likewise he is ever on the alert to commend and congratulate those who have achieved some measure of suc- cess. Not only in Beaver but throughout the county his interest and leadership in educational advancement has been recognized by his participation in the affairs of the WPlALp as president of the Secondary School Principals of Beaver County and by his active part in the Beaver County Schoolmen's Club for many years. Such untiring, unselfish service is typical of Mr. Linn. The citizens of Beaver, the many students who have come under his influence as teacher and principal, all owe a sincere vote of thanks to him for his many words of encouragement, his friendly advice and wise counsel through these years. We, the class of 1953, consider it our pleasure and high privilege to dedicate this Shingas to our teacher, principal, and good friend- MR. CHARLES S. Fatafzick ffm. 5 pm If there is one man who deserves credit for his tireless work on behalf of the senior class, it is the sponsor. He seems to spend all of his spare time advising and enthusi- astically guiding the class through its many projects and activities. Mr. Charlesworth, with his warm friendship and winning per- sonality, has sparked our class to a success- ful wreath campaign, an all-out ticket sale for George Washington Slept Here, a lus- cious banquet, and a beautiful senior dance. He has been much more than just a sponsor, he has been a friend and asso- ciate, winning the respect and cooperation of the entire class in every project and ac- tivity. We, the class of '53, appreciate the friendly advice and wise counsel of our class sponsor, Mr, William L. Charlesworth. Over the past thirteen years the name, W. W. Paterick, has become synonymous with the production of outstanding year- books in Beaver High School. It is hard to imagine editing a Shingas without his able assistance. From the first baseball picture taken in the spring until the final deadline of March fifteenth, he attends to the hundreds of details that go into the successful publishing of an annual. Because of his help and encouragement the sales staff hit a new record of nine hun- dred books sold this year. For handling so capably our most important project while in high school, the class of '53 says, Thank you, Mr. Paterick, you have truly given us a lasting account of our days in B. H. S. MR. Throughout the state, as a result of recent legislation, school districts have been combining into what is referred to as Jointures, or Joint School Districts. This merely means that boards in local districts have decided to join together for cooperative efforts to improve the financial, educational and administrative functions of the entire area. From this iointure will grow, in many in- stances, the Union District. The Beaver Area, comprised of Beaver and West Bridgewater Boros, Boro and Brigh- ton Townships have now formed a Jointure. A SHINGAS FOR ME-IN '53 . Such was the slogan of the Shingas Staff this year. With our sights set on the production of 900 books our salesmen went to work. After a slow start sales picked up and by the end of the second week our goal was in sight. To the wonderful support given us by the students in school was added the ever-increasing response by the alumni, businessmen and School Board members. Thus the class of '53 can boast the highest record ever set by any class of Beaver High. Not to be outdone the editorial staFF went to work in earnest. Picture schedules were set up, contracts signed for printing and covers, plans developed and production went into high gear. By the end of January two thirds of the book had been completed and was in the hands of the printer. By March l all that re- mained was some proof-reading. Thanks to the fine cooperation all around our book was ready for distribution early in May. To keep the students of B. H. S. informed concerning school affairs, to keep the commun- ity informed about activities of various high school groups the Echo Staff of i952-53 did an outstanding iob of liaison between the school and community through the pages of the Beaver Valley Times. Appearing eight times during the year as a mimeographed paper thanks to the Office Practice class and Mr. R. G. Smith, the Echo tried not to miss a bit of gossip, sports items, club news or all school news that's fit to print . The ninth or Senior issue was printed and included the Senior will and prophecy- highlights ofthe year and outstanding accom- plishments of the Senior Class. Among the noteworthy accomplishments ofthe Echo Staff was another fine Heart Hop held on Valentine's Day. The innovation added to this year's Heart Hop was a King and Queen of Hearts. These two were elected by the couples during intermission. A tour of the valley schools by staff members resulted in suggestions for improving the Echo in future years. Popularly known as the M. A. C., the club sponsored a fund-raising square dance in December and the annual trip to a musical program in Pittsburgh in the spring. Sponsor of the group, Mr. A. Linn, is one of the newest organi- zations in the school, formed just two years ago. The main purpose of the club is to instruct and guide the future teachers of America. In carry- ing out this objective, the students enjoyed ob- serving classes in session and discussing any question they might have with the teachers. The seniors were given the opportunity to visit and receive help from the various teachers of the Beaver School District. 41 Juiwuz, Although the club is made up completely of girls, anyone interested in nursing or any field of medicine is eligible to join the Future Nurses Club. Under the guidance of the school nurse, Mrs. Helen McAleer, the girls choose hospitals in which they would like to train by visiting the various hospitals in the district. Practical information and helpful guidance was offered to the girls by the many nurses who spoke at club meetings. Next pleasel If you attended any of the big high school dances this year, you probably saw enthusiastic Camera Club members busily snapping the pic- tures of all the dancing lads and lasses. Then, too, the Camera Club's Photo Contest created quite an interest from the student body. The competition was keen and the Club members produced many outstanding photos, some of which are displayed in the Shingas. The Camera Club takes charge of operating the movie proiection machines and assists the Shingas Stal? in the developing and printing of pictures to be used in the yearbook. The Girls Athletic Association, sponsored by Miss Genevieve Gates, held its meetings and tournaments during the activity period each Monday and Wednesday. Soccer, played in the fall, was followed by those favorite in- door sports, ping pong, paddle tennis, and badminton. November came along and so did volley ball. The volley ball teams fought vigorously to gain the championship title at the annual volley ball tournament. After the Christmas holiday the basket- ball season went into full swing. Swimming suits were taken out of moth balls and every- one went in for a dip at the G. A. A. swim- ming party that was held in New Brighton Y. M. C. A. building. U Commander Reber and his Rangers did not communicate with outer space this year, but they did have a club to be proud of. The Senior Science Club, open to all chemistry and physics students offers an opportunity for ex- periment and research in these fields. As one of their outstanding proiects of the year the club visited the Westinghouse Plant in Vanport. The Westinghouse en- gineers might have had some expert advice in the field of science had they asked for it, however, since they did not, members of the Live Wire Beaver High Club were able to 46 fluff concentrate on learning something about the processes and products of Westinghouse. An- other interesting experience was the visit to the Science Club Fair in Pittsburgh. Monthly meetings of the club were interesting not only because they provided entertaining experi- ments and movies, but also because ofthe re- freshments that followed. Linn, the Presidents Council is organized each year as a medium for discussing the activities of the high school. The council is composed of the editors, leaders, and presidents of the various high school groups. At their meetings the members of the Presidents Council have an opportunity to exchange ideas and to dis- cuss the many problems and accomplishments of student organizations. Knuncll The Student Council, organized for over twenty years, strives to promote and improve the worthy ideals of scholarship, citizenship, sportsmanship, and better relations between the faculty and student body. The Student Council sponsors the selling of candy at home basketball games, the annual trimming ofthe Christmas tree placed at the entrance of the high school, and the successful Amateur Show. The induction ceremony of the Alpha Chapter presented in February was an out- standing assembly. Presented by the eight members selected at the end of their iunior year the program was very impressive. Dick Smith, the president, presided and welcomed the guests. Devotions and the pledge to the flag were led by Darla Hall and Bill Cupps. Gay Barley voiced the spirit of the group in a song entitled Let's Sing, Let's Play, Let's Work Together. The introduction of the four members who portrayed the four objectives of the So- ciety was made by the president through the following: for Service, All down the endless years the wheels are run By little things. Linn, principal of Beaver High School presented Miss Esenwein, sponsor of the Society to the assembly and guests after which he commented briefly on the selection of candidates and presented the newly elected members their certificate of membership. Toni Trent then introduced the guest speaker for the day, Morgan H. Sohn, iudge of the Court of Common Pleas, Beaver County. His excellent talk dealt with the relationship of these four qualities to life itself. He capa- bly pointed out their importance for good citi- zenship. One of the highlights of the choral program is the selection of several of its out- standing singers to represent Beaver High at the Midwestern or All State Chorus. It started the year ot? with a bang by breaking one of its traditions, the HI formation, hailed in the 'l95'l Shingas as traditional was finally re- placed by H EL LO formation. For a long time this had been an ambition and goal of the band, but it had had only enough musi- cians to make part of the word. Their other formations were the envy of the other bands in the county. Nobody will ever forget the Hawaiian show fthe maiorettes were dressed in hula costumes complete with grass skirtsli or the circus that the band brought to Gypsy Glenn Stadium. But perhaps the show that the band will remember most vividly is the 54 show with the exploding tuba. ln the midst of the half-time formation Joby Fisher's tuba began to act up. lt skipped a beat now and then. Suddenly volumes of smoke and sparks came pouring out of the bell of the horn. Joby staggered out of formation. Drum ma- ior Jack Erath stopped the band and ran to his assistance. By this time Joby was fiat on his back. Mr. Cornelius ran onto the field to see what was the matter. He motioned to- wards the stands. Out on the field came two maiorettes with water bucket and stretcher. They put out the fire fa smoke bombl with the water, loaded the tuba onto the stretcher, carried it off the field, and returned with a shiny new tuba. They revived Joby, gave A5'anaL 6' C5 him the horn and went on with the show. However the band's activities have not been confined to the football field. When football season terminated they retired to their sound proof band room to practice for the spring festival. Beaver sent five representatives to Mid- western Band this year. Dick Smith, James Torok, lvan Peters, Lee McDonald, and Janice Hughes. James Torok was to represent Beav- er at State Band. The annual band banquet sponsored by the band mothers was a smashing success. Turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, apple pie, and milk comprised the de- licious feast that highlighted the banquet. The senior, male members of the band refused all food and nourishment for three days to prepare themselves for this, their last band banquet. Most of them, however, still couldn't finish their third piece of pie. Mr. Paterick as master of ceremonies was his usual congenial self. Mr. Cornelius made a short speech complimenting the band as being the best in the valley, and Mrs. McCleery presented letters to the iuniors, and numerals and statuettes to the seniors. Murray Cornelius, has chosen a variety of music that will not only give the members experience in playing with others, but also will acquaint them with all types of music. By becoming more acquainted with all types of music, the orchestra members appre- ciate all types. During the year the orchestra has played for both Junior and Senior Class Plays and contributed to the success of the Music Festival. JILQ. Ufrqaniaia, The organists who spend many hours practicing in order to play so well at our as- semblies never have received the full recogni- tion they deserve. They have contributed greatly to the success of our assembly pro- grams throughout the year. Waddell jnnflvall, GROVE CITY Coach Pete Kane took the wraps off his '52' football squad in the opener against Grove City. A fumble on the opening kickoff set up the first Grover touchdown. Thompson dashed over from the four yard stripe. Then on the opening of the second stanza Norm Lengyel scooped up a Grover fumble and thundered 75 yards for the tally. A safety made it 8-6 Beaver. Then in the fourth quar- ter Thompson again scored for the Grovers from the 12. That ended the scoring at 12-8 in favor of Grove City. Our first game Iostl MOON TOWNSHIP Beaver entered the second game without Fritz Kirchner and Bob Richards who were in- iured in the Grove City tussle. Deyton of Moon, after racing 60 yards, posted the first tally on a pass. Adding the extra point, Moon players set the score at 7-0. They added another T. D. in the third quarter to make it 13-0. Camp- bell added two touchdowns in the final quar- ter and Lengyel tacked on an extra point to give Beaver a 13-13 tie. On a fake punt in the last 10 seconds of play, Moon passed and Hanson, gathering it in, galloped the whole way to make it 20-13. HOPEWELL In two plays after the kick-off Marovich went the whole way to make it 6-O Hopewell. A safety added in the second stanza gave Hopewell an 8-0 lead. Early in the fourth 58 Lengyel powered over from the two yard stripe to make it Hopewell 8, and Beaver 6, but that was all so we lost our third one. MIDLAND Ouch! This one really hurt. To make a sad story short Midland scored seven touch- downs and two extra points for a grand total of 44 points. Steffine posted the first Bobcat score on a romp in the third stanza. Lengyel added the extra point for our first 7. Lengyel posted another tally for our final score to make it another loss to the tune of 44-13. NEW BRIGHTON To add insult to iniury, New Brighton romped over us with 5 touchdowns and three extra points for 33 points to our score of 0. Campbell passed the Bobcats to the New Brighton 25. Steffine, then, carried to the 14, but his fumble allowed New Brighton to re- cover and to end our scoring threat. FREEDOM After six line bucks Ciani took a handoff and roared into paydirt for the first Oiler score. The extra point try failed and Freedom had 6. Beaver drove to their opponents 29 where they fumbled and Freedom recovered to start off the fourth stanza. After a long march Golletti sneaked across for the final tally of the game. With the extra point added, the score read 13-0. j1mt6alL Bwzquet 7952 y MONACA Well at least we scored in this game. The Indians threw the tomahawk at us for six touchdowns and four extra points-a grand total of 40. Campbell passed to Lengyel for our first score and the score stood at 13-6. Matthews plunged over from the one yard stripe after a 72 yard drive in the last quarter. The final score stood at 40-125 seventh straight loss. CORAOPOLIS Cory gathered in three touchdowns and three extra points in the second, third, and fourth stanzas for a total of 21 points. Beaver tied up the score in the second stanza at 7-7 59 when Steffine and Campbell carried to the six and Campbell streaked around right end for the tally. This made eight straight defeats with only one chance to redeem ourselves. We kept our fingers crossed. ROCHESTER Well, we uncrossed our fingers now, because we lost both the game and our treas- ured Oaken Bucket. Rochester cashed in on 7 touchdowns and 4 extra points for 46 points. Beaver's lone touchdown came in the final stanza when Dick Hult gathered in a T9 yard pass in the end zone. The extra point was added and we had our only 7 points. The final score stood at Rams 46, Bobcats 7. Ulm, Bob Richards Center-It was Bob's spirit that kept the boys on the ball during the Grove City game until he was injured in the third quarter. Bob was a two year letterman. Larry Farmer Encl and Co-Captain of the team-Larry an- chored down one end position and played fine ball on both ofliense and defense. He is also a two year letterman. Frank Steffine Fullback and Co-Captain of the team-He was noted for his hard driving smashes off tackle which consistently gained yardage. Mike Zachodni End-lt was Mike who was the brick wall when the opponent tried to go around his end. Dave Winborn Tackle-Dave was plagued by iniuries all year and saw very little action but when he was in the game there were no gaps in our line. Fred Kirchner Guard--When this boy was at guard many an enemy failed to gain yardage through his position. Neal Mabin Halfback-His fine punting got Beaver out of many bad situations and put the opponent back deep into the shadow of their goalpost. Jack Waddell Manager-Jack was right there on the field in every game with his medicine kit and towels, repairing all those iniuries and bruises. His fine services were appreciated by the team. 6 s. Cheerleaders come and cheerleaders go, but six that we know will live long in the mem- ory ofthe high school students of 1952-53. lf WPIAL awards were given to cheerleaders, these six, led by Kathy Schneider, would rank at the head of the list. School spirit in Beaver High reached the highest level possible in spite of the fact that neither the football nor basketball teams were having winning sea- sons. The student body caught the enthusiasm of the cheerleaders in the pep meetings and supported the teams to the last whistle. I., and a visit from a for- mer Russian Countess now a waitress at Child's Restaurant were only every day occurrences to a family as eccentric as the Sycamores. Es- sie Sycamore took ballet lessons for years and never learned a thing, but then Boris Kolenkov, the instructor, was a friend of the family so she continued, Grandpa Vanderhof never paid his income tax because he didn't believe in it, and Penelope Sycamore tried everything from raising snakes in the living room to chiseling a statue of Mr. DePinna, the hired man. But the unpredictable Cor- nelia Otis Skinner and her amiable friend Emily Kimbrough did iust that. The results of the adventures on board were hilarious and included: two money belts that wouldn't get lost, a slight tussle with the measles, and a mon overboard . After arriving in France the adventure never slackened for the girls, though privileged enough to sleep in the famed Cardinal Richelieu's bed, found it already occupied by bed bugs! The iuniors, under Mrs. Beulah Cook's able direction, scored a hit with their first taste of the theater. With pomp and ceremony, Queen Dorothy and her court: Maid of Honor, Dol- ores Mott, and Attendants, Pauline Benson, Sally Fife, Yvonne Heath, Sally Hughes, Nancy McCoy, and Doris Smith created a picturesque scene as they proceeded to the royal throne. Leading the procession were tiny flower girls: Grace Fusco, Patty Kountz, Carolyn Swager, and Amy Teapole, Crown Bearer, David For- rester, and Sceptre Bearer, William Rowse, Jr. Thomas Brown and William Shoup served as train bearers. Following the processional, Dorothy was crowned May Queen of Beaver High School. The program, Cavalcade of America, fea- tured the growth of different types of dancing in our country. The colonial years featured the customary Maypole dance and the Minuet, the national era was portrayed by the Texas Schottische, Blackhawk Waltz and Air de Bal- let, our modern era consisted of the Charles- ton, and a square dance which brought the May Day to a grand finale and with the re- cessional, another successful May Day came to a close. Girls' physical education instructor, Gene- vieve L. Gates, directed the program, the script was written by Beulah V. Cook, and the Beaver High School Band, directed by A. They iust couldn't get rid of me no matter how hard they tried. Everywhere they went I was right there too. In case you still don't get the drift, this is the way it really happened ----- One late summer day when I woke up I found someone writing on my cover-B. H. S. The next day as I was carried up the steps of my new home I found out that those letters stood for Beaver High School. As my soph friends and I hunted for the right rooms we passed 213 where we heard, SpelIed for- ward or backward, it's Reber . . . At the end of the first week, a tough football sched- ule was pasted on my cover. lt really must have been tough. Final total--6 losses, I win, 2 ties. All over my pages were secret football plays. The players studied me from the top of my margin to my bottom line. Then I came into my glory. Patty Anzio, our lovely football queen, used me as a dance program at the soph's first big fling of the year, the Football Dance. Then I was tossed aside for two glori- ous weeks. Big snow . . . Enough said. On top of that, Christmas vacation came a few days later driving all thought of study from my pages. Santa brought me ten new pages and a brand new cover. I went back to school to start basketball season feeling like a new girl. My pages were soon covered with Silas Marner, sections of the earth worm, and plans for the coming Heart Hop .... What are they going to use me for next! There I was, carry- ing my pages full of notes for the spring fes- tival .... The next thing I knew it was April ln Paris, and my first high school Prom. I, little Lucinda Looseleaf, was squeezed be- tween some forgetful soph's compact and comb. Before I could quite catch my breath, I was being pushed into the soft lining of a velvet evening wrap. I really saw the world as a soph because at the Senior Dance I found myself spending the evening in a Japanese Garden. But later I had one very big dis- appointment. The Senior Day I had waited so long for never came. Firecrackers blew up the works, .... Dance steps for the United Na- tions May Day were soon written on my last line of page one, thus ending my busy sopho- more year and beginning my glorious sum- mer vacation .... ACT II Lucinda Looseleaf, that's me, a iuniorl A middle man. Not the boss yet but still not an underclassman. I really had a big time that year . . . As mascot of the O.H.G., I fid- dled while the outhouse burned at the Mid- land bonfire. But Midland won. We had a pretty good season though. Total-5 wins, 4 losses. We beat Rochy, I4-0, making us the first to win the Old Oaken Bucket. What a gala time that assembly was. I beamed from cover to cover as I rode down the street in the football captain's pocket , . . Back to normal but not for long. National Cat Week hit high school with a bang. Everything from heels and bow ties that light up to patched levis and cowboys Cheaper By the Dozen, our first attempt at drama was a huge suc- cess. I stood bravely by in the hands of the prompter, Carol, as the play came to its grand finale . . . Then on to basketball. We were climbing the hill to glory with only one loss, but we slid back down when Midland beat us once more. We fought our way to the top only to be beaten by Freedom in our last game. I was so mad, I almost flipped my pages. Oh well, better luck next year . . . Wasn't that jazz music I heard coming from the auditorium: It sure was. None other than the Collegians. I almost split my covers laughing at the teachers in the trial of the Senior assembly . . . I nearly singed my pages when I got too close to the fire in Hades. . . . Then report cards came . . . No red marks on my pages this time. lt's sure a good thing this year is over, l'll need all summer to recuperate. ACT III Check this cats. Big wheels at last. The seniors and I, little Lucinda, came waltzing up the stairs full of ideas on how we would run this school. Jeepers, we really started out the school year right. Assembly and then dismis- sal at 3 p. m. Noticed four new teachers, not at all hard on the eyes, and new fountains in honor of Carl Murray. The new fad was catty cars with Hollywood mufflers. Look out for your life . . . Football season opened. Go, go daddy -oh was heard everywhere. Too bad they didn't do it. Need I say more? Yes I do. For- get about the Rochy game. There goes a Flamingo!! No, it's only a football sailing for another touchdown. Rochy's of course . . . Down, boy, down. There's plenty for every- one. Although they didn't do too well at foot- ball, they certainly made up for it in eating and eating and eating. Won't they ever get their fill. Watch the birdie. Shingas pictures were being taken. Since when did girls belong to B. A. C. Dig this man. Maybe school is not as bad as we thought. Teachers' conference at New Castle. And a few days later, an assem- bly on Big Ideas . . . Oh Happy Day? Re- port cards. No red marks though. Just all F's . But the Blueiays soon cheered us up at another fine assembly . . . Here comes the showboat. The fifty-three showboat. No we're not crazy, it's just the Shingas skit. A Shingas for me in '53 was heard everywhere. You guessed it. Shingas soles had started. At last! Nov. ll--A Holiday! But not for the band. They made up for it, though, when they won S25 in Midland. Boy what an assembly this morning. We thought we would be half asleep but Wil- liam Shudden soon woke us up with his tales of India. Elephant tails and tiger tails. The next tale we heard was the Junior Class play skit. Congrats, Juniors. Hope you have the same success on opening night. Final produc- tion, Our Hearts- were Young and Gay. Critics seal of approval. Congrats to the sophs', too, on a swell football dance. From under the queen's throne I watched dancing feet glide to heavenly strains. For details about the Thanksgiving as- sembly, ask some Tri-Hi-Y member. As for me, let me at that turkey. lt's a good thing I had two days to recuperate. We got back to school just as another six weeks bit the dust. Well, basketball season came and our football iinx tagged right along. But for three nights the iinx took a rest. We won! We won! I wonder if that S10 I slipped the ref helped? All ioking aside we did beat Leets- dale once and Freedom twice. Zingl Duck! That was too close for com- fort! Keep your seats, it was only Jim Lynch showing his skill at archery. Boy I'm glad my mom doesn't own a bow and arrow!! Cause, Worry, Worry, Worry, report cards again. Some kids get A's, some kids get B's, and then -there's me. Some characters must be wor- ried about a different thing. Fess up! Who did it? The vandalism, I mean. Row, Row, Row your Boat. Does anyone have an extra pair of water wings? Pretty neat this swim- ming to class. 'Twas the week before Christmas and all through the room, not a creature was stirring 'cept Cliff with his broom. The books in the lockers were closed very tight, marked, Not to be opened, for sixteen nights. When down at Peaks there rose such a clatter, I iumped in my unit to see what was the matter I came to a stop slid ten feet in snow, while the kids down at Peaks shouted, Go daddy-oh. A young hotrod driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment the cops all would kick. Mistletoe was hung in the back booth with care, in hopes that the girls would soon all be there. lt's Christmas they shouted as they danced round a chair, everyone down there had neither worry nor care. A Hollywood muff1er was heard on the street, we all rushed outside to find a rare treat. No school till next year! As he peeled out of sight, Merry Christmas to all, and to alla good night. Here we are again. Oh well, it couldn't last forever! lWhy not?i To top it off, Rochy finally beat us! Hang your head in shame. Ditto goes for the rest of the basketball games that season. Oh well, there's always base- ball. Jan. 20. What a memorable day. Yea Ike! A president could get elected every day for all we care. School got out at 11:30 and reconvened at 1:30 but who went back? Burp! Excuse me. Guess I ate CFD my lunch too fast. Ditto goes for the band banquet the following night. I'll bet l gained two pouncls. Oh well, this doesn't happen every clay. Then on to the Heart Hop. Comic Valen- tine verses were soon written on my pages and then rewritten on cardboard plaques and pasted against the walls of the gaily de- corated gym. Forgotten behind one of the plaques I carefully watched as the dancers waltzed to the strains of Vic Trola and his hot platters. A few days later I found myself once again in the gym rooting with all my might but to no avail. Once more we found defeat at the hands of the East All Stars. Why don't you believe me I think we should win, quoted direct from the basketball players. That seem- ed a pretty popular song that week. Our talent for the amateur hour was also caught croon- ing that tune. It lsn't Fair. Here it is re- port time and l'm Sorry again. The finale of our high school career was George Washington Slept Here. It was a big hit and certainly shouldn't have been the last. Come to the Mardi Gras was echoed through the halls. The Tri Hi Y out did themselves in a spectacular vision of fairy land . .. Did you dig the music at the Spring Festival too? Maybe it's iust because we're seniors that it sounded so swell. The same seems to go for everything in this last hurry scurry year. It's no April fool that we haven't any school. For six wonderful days we planned and wore our new Easter cluds. Now do you believe in the Easter bunny? Bye, Bye Blues. I think l'm going to pass. Just got my report card and much to my surprise, I got something besides an F . lD's show a little improvementi Tom, Dick, and Harry were being writ- ten on my pages. l was held by a pretty Senior at the Junior-Senior Prom. This time, posing as a program, I had been able to smuggle into one of the most important dances of my life. Didn't you enioy it too? Now as we are coming into the home stretch, I realize all that high school means to me. May Day, ldora Park and Baccalaureate Services are just a few of the things l will never forget. Can any Senior ever forget the last assembly put on by them- selves. We, the Seniors and I, got out at 10:30, free to do whatever we pleased. So what do we do? Go right back to school, natchl The Senior dance brings down the cur- tain on one of the most memorable occasions of my high school career. It is our big mo- ment and one that will last in my memory forever. Then comes that breath-taking moment we've waited twelve years for. Our diplomas. As I glance down at my last page, l begin remembering all the fun as well as the dis- appointments in our last and mOsf wonderful year. . Two was the charmed number for Coach Ernie Johnson's boys this season as they won two, tied two, and lost two. Their record hardly does the team justice for al- though they ended with a fifty-fifty season, they outplayed their opponents in every game. Their greatest trouble was hanging on to the ball and each game lost or tied was due to a fumble. Monaca Junior High took advantage of two fumbles within the 20 and 5 yard lines and beat the Bobcats 20-13. Mid- land, profiting by two Beaver fumbles, downed the Bobcats in a night game at Mid- land. While the Junior Bobcat line was con- sistently strong on both defense and otifense, opening large holes in the opponents' lines, several of the players stood out for their fine team spirit. Sparking the team was An- thony Taormina at quarterback. Equally valu- able to the team were Joe Rini, a consistent ground gainer, John Grad, Paul Dappenbrook, and Bob Salterelli at the halfback positions, and Charles Weyand and Tom Clark, the ends, playing top notch defensive ball.
