Upon your shoulders will in the near future rest the burden of your city, county, state, and nation and we herewith present and pass to you the great commission of our American Democracy and trust that you will ever be loyal to the great men who founded this good country and when you have passed from the scene of action it can be said of you that you have made the world better by having lived in it. Sincerely, Your Board of Education, A. J. Cole, President. It is a privilege to offer congratulations to each member of the class of '39, and it is the hope of the writer that all of your worthy ambitions may be attained. Sincerely yours, C. H. Archer, Superintendent. May you ever be prepared for the duties that lie ahead of you in your life's work. Edward Markham expressed it in this little stanza: For all your days prepare, And meet them ever alike: When you are the anvil, bear- When you are the hammer, strike. JACKSON, Principal The Beaver Stai, the Senior Class, the entire Student Body4all realize that what success Beaver has attained during the last two decades has been due to the successful administration of Mr. Jackson, a man of wide interests and experience. He is not only responsible for keeping the machinery of Beaver High School oiled, but his responsibilities include the county, the state, and the nation as the follow- ing bit of data will show: President, Mercer County Teachers' Association, 1934-35. President, Mercer County Principals' Association, 1935-36. President, West Virginia High School Athletic Association since 1931. First Life Member, West Virginia State Education Association, Jan., 1931. President, High School Division, State Education Association, 1922-23. Member Legislative Committee, State Education Association, 1923-24. Radio Speaker on Problems of the Child and the Teacher. Life Member, National Education Association. Member State Commission of North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools since 1929. Our principal is not only a member of the National Education Association, but he is an active one, having served on important committees since 1931. At present he is a member of the committee on Tenure. For the past ten years Mr. Jackson has served as a member of the State Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. This high honor carries with it great responsibility as it is the duty of this com- mission to inspect the high schools of the state and when they have met the requirements, take them into the Association, they must continue to inspect first class schools to see that they are keeping their standards, if not, they are first Warned and the second time dropped from the Association. His Alma Mater is Ohio State University, from which he took his Masters Degree in 1912. Since then he has studied in several American Universities and abroad. His five summers of extensive travel abroad include England, Italy, France, Germany, and Holland. He is now a member of the National Travel Club of America. During our stay in Beaver we have all found in our beloved principal, a most versatile and likeable man. We appreciate the staunch, loyal support that he has given the Class of 1939. Page Lf! Now that it is done, we feel like sitting back and giving out a great big sigh. In a way, we like to think of our job as being done--well done-we hope. Can we ever forget the pleasant association .... Wharton's maintaining that We just must have the theme, Our Circus Duyx on Benz'f:r, and his designing that went suc- cessfully on .... Bobby Fuqua, sports editor, rushing hither and thither with copy for football, basketball and track .... Alex Mahood and his co-worker, Bill Jones . . taking pictures of everybody and everything that came their way .... Arlene graduating with honors in january and leaving Randolph at the typewritier .... Randolph just typing and typinig . . . why the boy must have typewriter ribbons for veins .... jen and ber committee changing the advertising goal which made possible the addition of sixteen pages to the book .... The crying of the mil- lions .... When will the Beaver be out? .... That day seemed so far off' .... Mrs. Rice going mildly insane trying to get the Business Staff to finish the adevtising' .... ,Seniors rushing in at the most inopportune times to ask if they could add this honor or that .... That hnal ecstatic dreamed of, moment when the copy finally went to press .,.. Nothing to worry about! The Staff is proud that it has had Mrs. Rice and Miss Easley to guide it through the myster- ious maze of annual publishing, and many thanks do we owe to them. May you enjoy this book through the years as much as the day you Hrst grab it, eagerly Hip through it, and strike out for signatures! The Business Staff will long remember things that happened here this year while working on The Beaver . . . Our worried faces when the Editorial Stalf became so hold as to ask for an additional sixteen pages .... Oh! Would that put us in the red! ll ,... No, for these girls came across with plenty of advertising from the generous business people clown town ..., Photo- graphy .... Oh, that photography .... Poor Mr. Chandler sufliered so trying to make those Hi-Y boys stand still .... Miss Bartlett and Miss Shelton took hours getting their kiddies ready .... The Faculty .... how they almost hit our heads off for interrupting classes while tests were un! .... Irvin Bondurant, .... how he trimmed those pictures far into the night . . . . Staff meetings .... here and there between times .... Frank O'Brien the Junior Memher .... how he rushed around doing his part and keeping up with his numerous Love Affairs at the same time .... Pee Wee Rhoades .... the fight she had to put up to get those popularity contest pictures .... Kathryn Shupe .... how she hrought in subscriptions from Sophumores as well as upper classmen and then she was off to town to help with the advertising or to perform any of the various duties .... To be eligible for election to the society a student must be in the upper third of the class scholastically. Fifteen percent of the class are then elected from this group by the faculty who base their consideration on the four essential characteristics. It is the goal of the National Honor Society to shape its members into well-balanced students, willing and able to take leadership in any activity where they may be of service. Students work not toward outstanding bril- liance in one phase of school activity but toward a well-balanced school life of leadership, scholarship, character, and service. The Beaver Chapter of the National Forensic League was established in 1930. The local chapter has been very active in forensic work this season. The A team debaters have lost only one debate out of a total of twenty- four in which they have participated. Dur- ing the intervening years the organization has worked out many projects, two of which have become annual events. A medal is presented to both the June and January graduating senior with the highest average in English for his three years in Beaver High School. Every spring the club sponsors a Laural Day Program in General Assembly when the students' original com- positions, gleaned from all the English classes, are read, and later bound in a volume, Laural Leaves. Inter-society contests were held each year. As years went by Beaver Students began to enter mo1'e and more contests outside the school and interest in inter-scholastic contests was at a minimum. The two societies merged, calling themselves the Alps whose aim is to stimulate interest in public speaking and to give those interested a chance to appear before a large audience. Climaxed by wins over Princeton and Welch, the local football team closed a successful season. Under the skillful guidance of Coach W. E. Dole and assistant Coach Bill Davidson an inexperienced team was molded into a smooth working machine that gave a splendid account of itself. The Beavers opened the season by whalloping Elkhorn and Big Creek but took it on the chin from Gary to the tune of 13-7, despite a last minute rally. Richlands was the next victim of the Beavers but Oak Hill and Mullens were too strong for the local grid forces and the Beavers went down fighting. October 21, will be a date long remembered by Beaver for from that day showing' great offensive strength the Beaver crushed Welch to the tune of 34-21 in an exciting battle. Beavers then suifered a let down and succumed to Graham 6-0. The Beckley game was a nightmare for Beaver fans as Beckley won easily. However, the Dolemen came back on Armistice day to crush Princeton 20-O in a last half rally. The season came to a close with Huntington, who seemed to enjoy the muddy field and won 34-0. Dole, brought to a close a mediocre season by losing to Princeton in the opening round of the regional basketball tournament. The season's record shows 9 wins and 10 losses, exclusive of the tournament. The season opened against Elkhorn and the green and inexperienced lads from Beaver lost 32-27. However in a later game, the local boys whalloped the Indians 44-18. The Alumni was the first outfit to fall before the local hoopsters, losing 42-40. Charleston then invaded the lair of the Beavers and emerged victor- ious by a 37-34 count. The cagers then returned to the winning side of the ledger by taking Graham over the hurdles 44-27, but lost 30-29 in a second contest with G-Men. Mullens was the next foe and fell 27-23, but turned the tables on our quintet in the second game. The Dolemen then rang up 'two victories over Oak Hill, 38-20, and 47-35. Huntington, one of the most powerful teams in the state, invaded the Beaver gym on January 13, and returned home with a 42-21 victory. Beckley followed closely on the heels of Huntington and aided by some fine long dis- tance shooting won the first encounter 38-27, and also took the second game 42-31. On February 10, the cagemen opposed Welch, and romped home with a 54-37 decision. This game was the top one of the season, and the Beavers really went to town. In a second game Welch won 52-27. The cagemen then journeyed to Princeton, who edged their boys out 34-31. However, in the second game it was a different story, as the local lads pinned back the ears of the Princeton-Tigers 42-30. On February 3 a towering Clendennin team invaded Beaver gym, but returned home on the short end of a 32-29 score. The season closed with Gary, sectional champions, mauling the Beavers by a 60-46 score. For the first time in the history of the local school, Beaver was repre- sented by an eight man track team at the state track meet held at Morgan- town last spring. Coached by 'William Dole and Richard Frantz, this 1938 squad although handicapped by lack of experience and a small squad finished second in the Bluefield College invitational meet winning several first places. Beaver also finished second in the sectional meet, Big Creek taking this affair. In this meet Beaver qualified Douglas, Lenoir, Phillips, Gray, Lilly, Fuqua, Flynn, and Spencer for the state track meet. The local cinder team scored one point against a strong field in this meet. Track at Beaver seems to be in the upgrade because of increasing in- terest in the sport and the prospect for this year's team is brighter than usual due to the large number of lettermen returning. THE FOLAND PRINTING CQ. PRINTERS AND LITHGGRAPHERS BLUEFIELD, WEST VIRGINIA CLASS HISTORY After a final year in Junior High as mighty seniors we entered the portals of Beaver as rats and felt terribly insigniicant about the whole thing. We had little hope of ever becoming an outstanding class. It would be all we could do to get accustomed to the labyrinth of halls and rooms. At our first class meeting Anne Lilly was chosen as our president. Our motto was, There is no prize without a struggle. The class flower was the yellow roseg blue and gold were decided upon as the class colors. Toward the end of our first year in Beaver High School we began to feel that perhaps the place wasn't so bad after allg perhaps in time we might even grow to like it. In our Junior year we began to come out of our shells and let the rest of the school know that we existed. Bill Davis was elected president. When the first Stunt Program came along, we Juniors upset predictions by taking the trophy right out from under the noses of' the Sophomores and Seniors. At the Annual Banquet given by the Juniors for the Seniors we outdid our- selves. It was held on Friday, May 13, and the theme was Superstitions. We finally decided on our class rings after many arguments and as our second year in Beaver came to a close we felt that we definitely did like Beaver. Our Senior year started off in a burst of excitement and kept up that way all year. In a closely contested election at the beginning of the year William Walters was elected president, Jennie Clark French and Eileen Godsey, the first and second vice-presidents, and Anne Lilly, secretary. Again, in the Stunt Program We won the trophy. In the annual carnival we crowned Anne Lilly and Don Taylor as our queen and kingj For the Senior 'Play we presented Daddies In the last weeks there was the Junior-Senior Banquet, the Senior Reception, Baccalaureate Sermon, and finally, graduation. When we walked out with our diplomas we all felt pretty bad about leaving. We had our diplomas and behind us we had three of the grandest years in our whole life, our years in Beaver High! 80 TUAW MQQMMQW7 'dy kgjffzfggigfa E4 mf V .
