We were looking at what has happened this year to us, to others. We were Wondering about the moon shot, ot Snoopy, the landing vehicle and the astronauts in their sophisticated tlying machineg and lite and death and mere existence. We wondered about our lite and what it will mean to others. The 1969 Pine Burr is our contribution to lite. We wonder it it will be remem- bered and not iust exist. We hope that it will not be an anticlimax to this year ot innovation. When we consider that the average picture in this book was ex- posed at l fl O0 ot a second, we realize that only l4 seconds ot time are re- corded here. . . but what a time that is. Miraculously the year- book, conceived in inspiration and born in chaos, springs forth from Taylor Publishing Company each September into the hands ot eager students. Mem- bers ot the Pine Burr statt, known tor their sporadic bursts of activity, may suddenly materialize - at dances, assemblies, and club meetings - carry- ing the omniscient and ubiquitous cam- era. Less dramatic is their work behind the scenes such as designing layouts, typing, and selling ads. But whatever they do, their motto remains caveat emptor. Pam Dibrell, Broocks Osborne, Janet Goetz, and Mona Thomas consult the Ouiia board abou their futures. La Petite Adds Culture fi sm W? Katie Butler prepares the stage for an interesting meeting. To The BHS Girls i Katie and some of the other officers conduct the meeting. La Petite is a cultural organization, which seeks to make its young ladies good club members. It not only sold T.B. Bangles this year, but it also helped a needy family at Christmas. Officers represent the different Beaumont schools. Katie Butler, president, is from Beaumont High School, the vice- president, Michele Smith, is from Forest Park High School, the secretary is Susan McDaniels of French High School, and the treasurer, Kathleen Dooley, is from Kelly High School. The sponsor of the club is Mrs. Herbert Smelker, of the Womans Club. There are approxi- mately 25O girls in the club, from all of the Beaumont High Schools. These girls are chosen by the Woman's Club of which La Petite is a branch, and by the girls who are already members. 'fi' N! Four Junior girls, Niki Gish, Eileen Quick, Carolyn Hubner, and Shelley Rupp take advantage of the refreshments. Speech Clul: Atter a decade of dormancy, the Speech and Drama Department at Beaumont High cracked open its shell and produced a batch ot eggheads. The pride and ioy ot the Speech and Drama Club were the sponsors, Mr. Sodders and Mr. Riley. The club had its own special mascot, a pickle. The meetings were noted for their orderly business procedure because everyone knows that speech students never like to talk. On the serious side, the Speech and Drama Club made vast strides in establishing a sound forensic and thespian program at BHS. Students traveled to six tournaments and produced two plays, Blithe Spirit lremembered for its ghosts, gray grease paint, and rosesl and Gammar Gur- ton's Needle which received a second place trophy in UIL competition. Speaking ot trophies, the club won thirteen at various tournaments to grace the dusty trophy cases ot BHS. All in all, a good foundation had been laid tor tu- ture speech achievements. The primary aim of the Future Farmers of America is the development of agricultural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship that may be helpful in later life. These aims are carried out by use of their forestry plot and farm facilities. The quality cattle and poultry raised by the members are entered in the South Texas State Fair. Also, trips are made to large cattle shows such as the Houston Fat Stock Show. All students that are interested in pursu- ing studies in the field of agriculture sign up for membership.
