Yianitsas, Marjorie Wright, Ed Frost, Martha W 01320 illiarns, Vlllht Ht YIHHH The Voice of Youth Club, an organization of Beaumont High School sponsored by Miss Anna du Perier, makes it possible for our top history students to meet and discuss current questions both foreign and domestic. Meetings are held each Friday during fifth period. A regular procedure is followed. At the beginning of the discussion a vote is taken to determine the opinion of the group. Then four members of the group, who have been given a month's time in which to prepare their talks, present different views. After each speaker has given his three minute address, he is in turn asked questions by the group. A general discussion of the question follows. Toward the end of the period, a final vote is recorded to see if the opinion of the group has changed. Topics for discussion are selected by students who present suggestions to the program committee. The vice-president is the presiding officer of this committee. Other active committees include historian, public relations, membership, social, typing, and pub- licity. Some topics discussed during the current year were: l. Should the Wagner Act be abolished? 2. Would a Republican victory benefit the coun- try? 3. The United States versus Iohn L. Lewis! 4. Should the government maintain price control? The Voice of Youth, in addition to regular meet- ings, takes an active interest in matters pertaining to our school and city. Don Greenberg gave a talk over the public address in commemoration of Navy Day, and Ioe Fort read the Gettysburg address on the an- niversary of the battle of Gettysburg. A group of Students from the Voice of Youth took part in a forum discussion of the proposed charter for the City of Beaumont at a meeting sponsored by the Beaumont City Council of the Parent Teacher's Association. These students were: Lanora Morton, Evelyn Lorbeer, Bill Rush, Ioe Fort, Murray Paker, and O. D. This is a nationwide organization of the Latin students of the country. Texas has a federated league of which the Beaumont High School chapter is a member, having been duly and formally installed at an assembly program in October of this year by our sister league of the Robert E. Lee High School of Goose Creek. The purpose of the organization is to promote interest in the study of Latin in the high school and to cultivate a good fellowship with the students of other schools. The league is also by nature a service club and has for its yearly plan the helping of others in its program at Christmas time and at other seasons in the giving of its services. Its programs tend to be not too serious but wholesome. As an incentive for work and a reward for effort, the league sponsors the awarding of honors and trophies to winning students at the end of Latin week which is proclaimed by the state federation each year, usually in the month of April. The officers of the league are Dorothy Chitwood, senior consul, Annita Sibley, junior consulg Shirley Bennen, corresponding scribe, Emilie kylie, recording scribe, Margaret Ann Beehle, Aedileg Ross Wilder, quaestor. Other members are Mike Baine, Iohn Ellis, Dimitri George, lean Giddings, Evelyn Guidry, Carolyn Hart, Nancy Mace, Penelope McClurkin, Iim McFaddin, Iames Parker, Donald Sanders, Robert Scott, David Stuart, Ieanne Tyrrell, Billie Iean Vandever, Virginia Winfrey, Sam Yanitsas. ia. . T , 01450 Life of the Party is a lively, understanding study of modern youth. The Hughes family mOVeS to Butterfield and begins to choose friends. Mr. Hughes is to set up a branch office for his firm: flighty, funny Mrs. Hughes, Helen Klein, has high social ambitions. Oldest daughter, Mildred, Alexine Moss, fancies her- self in love with the snooty son of a bank president. Imagine what happens to their aspirations when stu- clious daughter lean, Mary Gambrell, under the illu- sion that she is in love with smoth-talking Mike Tisdale, Lee Folse, flings off her reticences and be- comes the life of the party. And what a party! Dapper Teddy, Lindsay Boykin, her brother, gets into a merry mix-up juggling four dates at once. And youngest daughter Amy, Betty Coop- er, a rowdy cheer-leader, falls in love with Snazzy, Bill Threadgill, for the first time. Neighbors object to the noise-to the extent of punching bewildered Mr. Hughes, Kyle Wheelus, in the nose. The police arrive, lean is in for a hard awak- ening, and so are the others, including both her parents. They all become aware of the serious im- plications of what had seemed funny, and, of course, everything turns out all right. Others playing parts in the play were as follows: Thelma Lou Avant, Evelyn Lorbeer, Dolores Crews, Ruby Nell Barclay, Billie lean Wroten, Don Canute- son, Dean Grant and Don- nie Thompson.
