f Wi 'I lfi? ttf FIRST ROW: Horace Hawkins, Johnny Norton, Dick Vogt, Ricky Miller, Buddy Luckey. SECOND ROW: Carl Hendricks, Harold Holmes, Ray Williams, W 'ff' Ld . Howdy McTeer, Jerry Smoak, Bruce Whitney, Paul Schwartz. eauforf jlzin 644615 The Beaufort Tidal Wave Track Team raced to its third consecutive state track championship at the University of South Carolina, May 16, 1959. The Wave, improved greatly since the Post Relays, won the AA title by taking five first places and placing in six other events. During the early season the Wave managed to keep its regular season winning streak going, but looked like anything but a state championship squad. Heavy losses through graduation, plus three other un- expected losses when Jim Whelan moved away, Bill Peterson went to college a year early and Larry Rogers dropped out with a knee iniury caused Beaufort to struggle. The Evening Post Relays came early last year and the Wave looked very mediocre showing very little balance and depth. But since the Post Relays a tremendous change took place. Beaufort still continued to win during the regular season and ran its winning streak to 39 straight. The young boys on the squad were gradually getting ex- Page Seventy perience and they began to realize they could do things they didn't know they could. So the Wave worked very hard and came back from the early season mediocrity to grab its sixth straight conference title, fourth straight lower state crown, and finally its third straight state championship. Carl Hendricks came off his crutches to win the high hurdles and place third in the low hurdles. Paul Schwartz throwing against a stiff wind heaved the discus 145 feet 10 inches to take that event. Lenny Taylor fought off a pack of upper-staters with a strong finish to win the 440 yard run in 53.6. Bruce Whitney came through when the chips were down and won the broad jump at 19 feet 3.5 inches. The Wave mile relay team of Lenny Taylor, Bruce Whit- ney, Ray Williams, and Ricky Miller defeated favored Laurens by running a 3:43.7 breaking a new BHS record which the same foursome established in the lower State meet. Team scores were: Beaufort, 36, Rivers of Charleston, 24, Darlington, 17, Laurens, 14.5.
