American and English literature are stud- ied in the high school English classes. Above Dennis Smith gives an oral report on Beowulf in Mrs. Zeigler's English IV class. Beowulf, an epic poem, is the first written piece of English literature. Also stressed are outside reading, crea- tive writing, book reports and research papers. Left we find Susan Rogers of English III deeply involved in a paperback edition of SCARLET LETTER. Paperback editions of many of the classics are available to the English students. Below, reading in class is an essential part of the Latin I class. Latin students learn about Roman history, customs, and mythology as well as to read and translate Latin. H57

FOSTER American History English I was - Psychology, the study of human behavior, helps students to understand people better. Right, group study is important in Mr. Norris' phychology class, as are field trips and talks by visiting authorities in the field. Below left, the second period economics class follows in the book as Mr. Guinn talks. Economics and government are new requir- ed subjects for seniors. Economics famili- arizes students with economic concepts and terminology including the basic fundamen- tals of money and banking, the stock mar- ket, taxation, and business organizations. Government classes study local, state and national government in the light of a chang- ing Constitution, economy, and society. Below right, World History students take notes as Mrs. Pearson lectures on ancient Italy. This required course provides a back- ground of understanding for today's in- stitutions and societies.
