'43 L SHARON LEVINE Cfadd Aafory We are a part of all that we have met. What a small scope our horizon took in on that breathless, exciting day in September 1948 when 118 of us took a closer look at the new horizons that loomed ahead of us-school! The word school cast the air of eager anticipation around us each ti.me it was mentioned, but twelve years seemed as if a million would be closer and easier to obtain. DOTTIE EAKIN ln the next six years, the horizon broadened as we learn- ed the 3 R's and even more important how to get along with others. Teacher-she must have had the patience of a saint-was a second mother to us, or in our rambunctious moments, the overbearing dictator. Our scope of knowledge increased with daily homework assignments, plays, and oral book reports which brought out the ham in us. Socially, our friendship circle widened to include the opposite sex. The days of whispered giggles, passed love notes, and boy-girl chasing at recess were upon us! The sixth grade was the climax of our elementary school career. How we worked on our graduation exercises, wasn't it fun being the Senior ? Finally we received some of the respect elders expect to receive. We had spent six long years achieving this great station in life and were terrified by the reports of the school we would next attend. Why, it was like . . . like going into barbaric lands! They even changed classes and had a study hall every day. Proudly, yet sadly, we said farewell to grade school. We came to junior high with such high hopes of power and importance. Alas, only to come down to rock bottom again-seventh grade. Our horizons were broadening to in- clude change of classes and teachers. We were pulled off our sixth grade pedestals and put in our places. Although we were going around in a fog for a while, we finally took different classes and teachers in our stride. Little did we realize that after a while it would be hard for us to remember how it was like not changing classes. How we liked the idea of having a little time between classes to stretch our legs and to tell our best friend some- thing that we just could not ever write in a note. We were given even more liberty by being allowed to join clubs and the B.H.S. Band. This made us feel even more grown-up, even if those stuck-up upperclassmen did have the opinion that we were just babies. Why, the nerve of 'eml Lipstick and grown-up clothes became a part of our everyday experiences. We entered the dating world, that special world of sudden joy and pathos. Some began taking driving lessons-most of us had a chance to drive the car dur- ing these lessons. This brought the coveted Driver's license within our grasp, also we began, about this same time, that never-ending plaintive pleading to our parents for the use of the car. These long-awaited rewards made life exciting-as if being able to say we went to the high school wasn't enough. Yes, we were growing up. Ninth grade-How exciting it was to us to enter the wonderful whirl of high school activities! Alas, we found that we were low men on the totem pole, although some of our boys were able to take part in sports. This year for the first time we were able to choose two subjects on our own. We now began thinking of our future life-what we would be doing after we graduated. College, business school, nursing, finding a job, service-all had to be planned, and our sub- jects chosen accordingly. Our teachers, parents, and friends gave us a helping hand in trying to decide all of these Page One Hundred Fourteen very important questions which puzzled us. lt was hard getting settled down and placing each opportunity offered us in its proper prospective. One of our classmates was select- ed Sweetheart of B.H.S., one of our first honors as a class. Tenth grade-Silly sophomores fa word meaning wise fooli! Now we really felt as if we belonged. Many of us worked on the various school organizations and publications. Many of our classmates became full-fledged members of the varsity teams. At the end of the year, some of our group were honored by being asked to serve at the Junior-Senior. Eleventh grade Jolly Juniors-Just call us busy-bees. We had truly come into our own at school. lt was wonderful to be able to lead instead of follow. What class spirit we had! We were the first class to win the Powder Bowl as juniors. Then there was the Junior Carnival, and-was there ever another one like it?-our Junior-Senior, the culmination of months of planning and even more difficult, adapting these dreams to practical application. Class Day arrived, SENIORS at last! Twelfth grade-Then before we knew it, our last won- derful year at Beaufort High School began in a brand-new school. iOnly 33 of the original 'l'l8 members of the Class of T960 remained to graduate at Beaufort High School.J How proud we are to be the first class to graduate from a school like ours, with its superior physical plant, classroom equip- ment, language lab, and most of all dedicated teachers- how grateful we are for their guidance. The pace has not slowed down for a minute for us. As the saying goes, it takes work to stay on top, and we were at last on the very top rung of the extra-curricular ladder. We had privileges- rings,,the fabulous trip to New York, and Washington, the play on which we worked so hard, and conventions-what memories! Honors were heaped on our class-another Powder Bowl victory, beauty queens, honor students, the glory of effective team work in sports. Today we need to look back, not with sadness on all those fabulous times we have had during our school days, but with happiness that we have had these years to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. We have had much help along the way, for we've had friends going along the same rough road of growing, teachers willing to spend hours guiding us, and parents who gave us love, assistance, un- derstanding, and millions of little intangibles that are so es- sential, yet taken for granted. True we are losing something we'll never be able to regain, but we are also obtaining something we'll never be able to lose: we have a general background in many subjects, memories, precious now, but even more as we advance in years, we know how to work with people and how to give and receive help. All of this from just a few years of school, the most important years we'll ever spend. Although the sun has set on our high school days, the real landscapes are just opening up. Going forth into new horizons, often we'll look back with pride on you, Beaufort High, and hope that you will also be proud of us in our past accomplishments as well as in our future under- takings.
