'TlQ.l:x.t -K 95' ,W ty WQKQX Mr. Randel, You know that you have ranked high in our esteem and admiration since you came to Beaufort as principal of Beaufort High School when we were in the eighth grade. You endeared yourself to us immediately and that very year you received the yearbook dedication, which read in part: You have worked hard for us at Beaufort High School. We are deeply indebted to you for the high standards you have set for us and for the challenge you have presented to us to continually better ourselves and our school. You understand us and will always treat us Fair and Square. Through the years we have continued to respect you for your understanding and loyalty. It was with great pride that we learned of your new position as district superintendent of Beaufort Schools. Your background had prepared you for this iob. You had received the B.S. degree in English and Economics from Newberry College in 1942 and the Master of Education degree in edu- cational administration from the University of South Carolina in 1952. You had served variously as English, mathematics, and history teacher, then as principal and coach at Olanta High School from 1946 to 1948, as principal and subsequently as deputy superintendent for secondary schools in Beaufort District 1 from 1955 until last fall. You had served four years with the U. S. Navy during World War ll, leaving service as a lieutenant, senior grade. You later served as com- manding officer of Barrery B of the 248th F.A.Bn. with the rank of captain. You are married to the former Julia F. Smith of Newberry, and have two sons, plus a little daughter born last November. You hold membership in the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the American Association of School Administrators on both the state and national levels, the county, state, and national education as- sociations. You are past president of the Beaufort County Education As- sociation and you are a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church. We appreciate the contributions you are making to the life of your community, and we especially appreciate the education -in our schools. We shall continue to grow under your leadership. We hope we hold a spot as special in your heart as you will always hold in ours. We consider ourselves fortunate to know you, privileged to work with you, and proud to call you friend. Affectionately, The Yearbook Staff .fdclminidfraford fkinl' hrdf of .gjfuclenfa MR. WILLIAM E. DUFFORD, Principal is-'M 4614 l fl vm, NX.. MR. J. M. RANDEI., JR., Superintendent Mr. Dufford, We welcome you as our principal at Beaufort High School. We feel that you have the interest of young people at heart and that you know what makes us tick. We appreciate the fact that you love us in spite of our shortcomings and that you are generous with your pats on the back when we have done well. We have found you to be firm but fair and respect you for your consistency, your ideals, and your efforts to encourage the best in us. In looking over newspaper accounts and yearbooks, we have found that this is your life, Mr. Dufford: Your college career at Newberry was interrupted by your service in the Navy during World War Il. You returned from the Pacific to receive your B.S., in Math and Science in 1949. To say that your record in college activities was outstanding is an understatement. You were president of the student body, editor of the year- book, captain of the basketball team, and president of your fraternity. This is an inspiration to us. You have since devoted'your life to young people and education. You received your Master's Degree in Education at the University of South Carolina. You taught algebra and trigonometry at Winyah High School in Georgetown where you were also athletic coach. Then you came to Beaufort as principal of Beaufort Junior High in its first year of operation, 1957-58. While in Beaufort you coached the Midget football league and a church basketball team. Last year you taught and coached at Newberry. Such has been your life, Mr. Dufford. Again we welcome you. Now you realize why thank you is inadequate in expressing our appreciation for your launching us smoothly and successfully in our new school. Sincerely, The Yearbook Staff ff Q ,i.f'7 Fans MRS. This year BHS students participated in a large-scale testing program conducted by the guidance department. Shown here taking tests to determine natural ability in mechanical rea- soning are Lyn Huntley, Ann Donaldson, Donna Austin, and Diana Greco. Standardized IQ, aptitude, educational progress tests CSCAT, STEP, and DATI were administered to the var- ious grades. The guidance department helps students de- termine their course in life-what job is best for them, where, and if they should go to college. Below left, guidance counselor Mrs. Gray helps Carolyn Fant and Bruce Patterson decide which college is best for them. American and English literature are stud- ied in the high school English classes. Above Dennis Smith gives an oral report on Beowulf in Mrs. Zeigler's English IV class. Beowulf, an epic poem, is the first written piece of English literature. Also stressed are outside reading, crea- tive writing, book reports and research papers. Left we find Susan Rogers of English III deeply involved in a paperback edition of SCARLET LETTER. Paperback editions of many of the classics are available to the English students. The Student Council saw the first year in our new high school as a year of challenge. '59-'60 was cited as the year in which the foundations and programs of a good and successful student gvernment and high school should and must be laid. Therefore, the programs of the Council were keyed to reach not an immediate goal, but establish a clearcut path to greater achievements. It is with pride that we look back over the year. Handbooks were published, activity cards distributed, and National Education Week reached new heights under the direction of Student Council. By for the most successful school dance of the year was the Big Ape affair which the student council sponsored. ounci . . . 0-olaerafion 'KL 2 QMW 'fi s Bill Hendricks, Vice-President f'S 'ff-.J ...fs .1 K i -V ' ' A b ., ,K iunrir 14 . ,.. f' M4 sf fir! vw., s2 v,- HIFI SBIIIN. Our successes have been due we feel, to the co-operation between the entire student body and the faculty. Our President, Dennis Smith, was elected district chairman of the Student Council: he appointed .Ioan Gantt secretary. This is the first time Beaufort High has been so honored. Dennis proved himself an ex- cellent leader, inspiring us with his perserverance and hard work. Howdy McTeer, Jerry Smoak, Bruce Whitney, Paul Schwartz. eauforf jlzin 644615 The Beaufort Tidal Wave Track Team raced to its third consecutive state track championship at the University of South Carolina, May 16, 1959. The Wave, improved greatly since the Post Relays, won the AA title by taking five first places and placing in six other events. During the early season the Wave managed to keep its regular season winning streak going, but looked like anything but a state championship squad. Heavy losses through graduation, plus three other un- expected losses when Jim Whelan moved away, Bill Peterson went to college a year early and Larry Rogers dropped out with a knee iniury caused Beaufort to struggle. The Evening Post Relays came early last year and the Wave looked very mediocre showing very little balance and depth. But since the Post Relays a tremendous change took place. Beaufort still continued to win during the regular season and ran its winning streak to 39 straight. The young boys on the squad were gradually getting ex- Page Seventy perience and they began to realize they could do things they didn't know they could. So the Wave worked very hard and came back from the early season mediocrity to grab its sixth straight conference title, fourth straight lower state crown, and finally its third straight state championship. Carl Hendricks came off his crutches to win the high hurdles and place third in the low hurdles. Paul Schwartz throwing against a stiff wind heaved the discus 145 feet 10 inches to take that event. Lenny Taylor fought off a pack of upper-staters with a strong finish to win the 440 yard run in 53.6. Bruce Whitney came through when the chips were down and won the broad jump at 19 feet 3.5 inches. The Wave mile relay team of Lenny Taylor, Bruce Whit- ney, Ray Williams, and Ricky Miller defeated favored Laurens by running a 3:43.7 breaking a new BHS record which the same foursome established in the lower State meet. Team scores were: Beaufort, 36, Rivers of Charleston, 24, Darlington, 17, Laurens, 14.5. I-K. -ff :fi ,, ,Nga .1 f ,, .fvfawf WT' - PAQL gcgwARTz,,. ,W J. J. Feeling that Christmas Spirit should last all year long, these imaginative young people held a Christ- mas Hop in July as the first of many proiects. Not wanting to waste a moment of their valuable time, they set out to become door-to-door salesmen cluring the annual magazine drive. This cleared over one thousand dollars. To keep in trend with this modern age the unique Juniors traded their books for dark glasses and in- troduced a Beatnik Dance . Powder fiew and pageboys became pigtails as the girls donned clungarees, and the fellows, skirts, Page Eighty Six for the Power Bowl Game. The date of the Beauty Contest soon arrived, and was followed by the Junior Carnival. Anxiety grew as the night of the Junior-Senior drew near. Long hours spent in decorating were well worth while . . . this Junior-Senior was spectacular, the climax to a perfect year. Although jubilant over their successes they felt a moment of sadness when they realized that some of their classmates had earned the right to graduate with the Seniors. The Junior Class is eagerly looking forward to its new horizons as Seniors of 61. What a small scope our horizon took in on that breathless, exciting day in September 1948 when 118 of us took a closer look at the new horizons that loomed ahead of us-school! The word school cast the air of eager anticipation around us each ti.me it was mentioned, but twelve years seemed as if a million would be closer and easier to obtain. DOTTIE EAKIN ln the next six years, the horizon broadened as we learn- ed the 3 R's and even more important how to get along with others. Teacher-she must have had the patience of a saint-was a second mother to us, or in our rambunctious moments, the overbearing dictator. Our scope of knowledge increased with daily homework assignments, plays, and oral book reports which brought out the ham in us. Socially, our friendship circle widened to include the opposite sex. The days of whispered giggles, passed love notes, and boy-girl chasing at recess were upon us! The sixth grade was the climax of our elementary school career. How we worked on our graduation exercises, wasn't it fun being the Senior ? Finally we received some of the respect elders expect to receive. We had spent six long years achieving this great station in life and were terrified by the reports of the school we would next attend. Why, it was like . . . like going into barbaric lands! They even changed classes and had a study hall every day. Proudly, yet sadly, we said farewell to grade school. We came to junior high with such high hopes of power and importance. Alas, only to come down to rock bottom again-seventh grade. Our horizons were broadening to in- clude change of classes and teachers. We were pulled off our sixth grade pedestals and put in our places. Although we were going around in a fog for a while, we finally took different classes and teachers in our stride. Little did we realize that after a while it would be hard for us to remember how it was like not changing classes. How we liked the idea of having a little time between classes to stretch our legs and to tell our best friend some- thing that we just could not ever write in a note. We were given even more liberty by being allowed to join clubs and the B.H.S. Band. This made us feel even more grown-up, even if those stuck-up upperclassmen did have the opinion that we were just babies. Why, the nerve of 'eml Lipstick and grown-up clothes became a part of our everyday experiences. We entered the dating world, that special world of sudden joy and pathos. Some began taking driving lessons-most of us had a chance to drive the car dur- ing these lessons. This brought the coveted Driver's license within our grasp, also we began, about this same time, that never-ending plaintive pleading to our parents for the use of the car. These long-awaited rewards made life exciting-as if being able to say we went to the high school wasn't enough. Yes, we were growing up. Ninth grade-How exciting it was to us to enter the wonderful whirl of high school activities! Alas, we found that we were low men on the totem pole, although some of our boys were able to take part in sports. This year for the first time we were able to choose two subjects on our own. We now began thinking of our future life-what we would be doing after we graduated. College, business school, nursing, finding a job, service-all had to be planned, and our sub- jects chosen accordingly. Our teachers, parents, and friends gave us a helping hand in trying to decide all of these Page One Hundred Fourteen very important questions which puzzled us. lt was hard getting settled down and placing each opportunity offered us in its proper prospective. One of our classmates was select- ed Sweetheart of B.H.S., one of our first honors as a class. Tenth grade-Silly sophomores fa word meaning wise fooli! Now we really felt as if we belonged. Many of us worked on the various school organizations and publications. Many of our classmates became full-fledged members of the varsity teams. At the end of the year, some of our group were honored by being asked to serve at the Junior-Senior. Eleventh grade Jolly Juniors-Just call us busy-bees. We had truly come into our own at school. lt was wonderful to be able to lead instead of follow. What class spirit we had! We were the first class to win the Powder Bowl as juniors. Then there was the Junior Carnival, and-was there ever another one like it?-our Junior-Senior, the culmination of months of planning and even more difficult, adapting these dreams to practical application. Class Day arrived, SENIORS at last! Twelfth grade-Then before we knew it, our last won- derful year at Beaufort High School began in a brand-new school. iOnly 33 of the original 'l'l8 members of the Class of T960 remained to graduate at Beaufort High School.J How proud we are to be the first class to graduate from a school like ours, with its superior physical plant, classroom equip- ment, language lab, and most of all dedicated teachers- how grateful we are for their guidance. The pace has not slowed down for a minute for us. As the saying goes, it takes work to stay on top, and we were at last on the very top rung of the extra-curricular ladder. We had privileges- rings,,the fabulous trip to New York, and Washington, the play on which we worked so hard, and conventions-what memories! Honors were heaped on our class-another Powder Bowl victory, beauty queens, honor students, the glory of effective team work in sports. Today we need to look back, not with sadness on all those fabulous times we have had during our school days, but with happiness that we have had these years to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. We have had much help along the way, for we've had friends going along the same rough road of growing, teachers willing to spend hours guiding us, and parents who gave us love, assistance, un- derstanding, and millions of little intangibles that are so es- sential, yet taken for granted. True we are losing something we'll never be able to regain, but we are also obtaining something we'll never be able to lose: we have a general background in many subjects, memories, precious now, but even more as we advance in years, we know how to work with people and how to give and receive help. All of this from just a few years of school, the most important years we'll ever spend. Although the sun has set on our high school days, the real landscapes are just opening up. Going forth into new horizons, often we'll look back with pride on you, Beaufort High, and hope that you will also be proud of us in our past accomplishments as well as in our future under- takings.
