TRACK FIRST ROW: Johnny Gatch, Dick Vogt, Buddy luckey, Jimmy Logan, Bill Elliott, Dennis Smith, Larry Rogers, Lenny Taylor. The 1958 Beaufort High School track team continued to sweep aside all opposition as it ran its victory string to 33 straight and captured its 5th straight conference championship, 3rd straight lower-state crown, 2nd straight Evening Post Relays title, and 2nd straight State Championship. The Wave thinclads have not lost a track-meet in five years! The Wave had to muster all its power to down a tough Moultrie squad along with Summerville and James Island in a quadrangular affair at Mt. Pleasant to open the 1958 season. The final score was Beaufort 65, Moultrie 59W, James Island 21, Summerville 20M. Next the Wave routed Wade Hampton and Berkeley. ln its first home meet Beaufort easily defeated Summerville and Wade Hampton 101W - 43 1f2. The Ridgeland Tigers be- came the 33rd straight victim as the Wave swamped them 96-21. Beaufort captured the conference crown for the fifth Page Ninety-Four SECOND ROW: Jim Whelan, Paul Schwartz, Roy Butler, Bill Petersen, Clark Rider, lionel Cabaness, Carl Hendricks. straight time at Summerville. Final scores were: Beaufort 66, Moultrie 52, Summerville 19, James Island 8. The Tidal Wave captured the Evening Post Relay for the second year in a run at the Citadel. Scores were Beaufort 32, Moultrie 31, Cooper River 21 113, Summerville 17. Greeleyville was the site of the Lower-State meet and the Wave took home the cake for the third straight year. Beaufort 47, Moultrie 32, Summerville 21, Bishopville 19. Again Daniel provided Beaufort with lots of competition in the state meet and Moultrie made it doubly tough but the Wave brought home the state crown for the 2nd year in a row. Scores were Beaufort 28, Daniel 23W, Moultrie 22. All this was accomplished after its two best track per- formers were forbidden to compete for disciplinary reasons and others that were counted on were lost by iniuries. A truly outstanding feat against what the weak at heart would have considered too much to overcome!
