we sf . X , . '15, ' ..' ' .li-Y Fai'-V . Doug Digs Out. XYillie'i Snags One for B. H. jimmy jets Away. 'Wave Tying North Augusta, a AAA powerhouse, 0-0, and breaking their record of 25 straight wins was a moral victory for the Beaufort Tidal Xllave. lt was mostly a defensive battle as both teams were weak on of- fense. The game was played in drizzling rain which made passing and ball-handling difficult. lnvading the Beaufort field, the Berkeley Stags were set hack 25-12. The Tidal XVave showed strength both offensively and defensively and the linemen were outstanding. A good start and a game well-played gave us our first Conference victory. Defeating the XValterboro XVildcats, 25-12, gave the Wave their second win of the season. The XVildcats had one of the heaviest lines our team came up against this year, but it wasnlt enough to stop the de- termined Tidal NVave. This was our sixth victory over XYalterhoro in the last seven years. After two victories and a scoreless tie, the Tidal XVave was over-confident. In a thrilling game, XVade Hampton beat the XVave for the first time in history. The final score: 7-6. The XVave,s first defeat of the season dropped them into third place in the Lower Coastal Conference. Leaving our home field and journeying to Summerville, the Tidal XVave handed the Green XVave its seventh defeat of the season. By determination and hard play, with one T.D. called back, our team de- feated both the opposition and the officials. witli a fighting spirit, the Tidal XYave held the St. Andrews Rocks to a 14-14 tie throughout the home- coming game. Fired by a 14-6 defeat last season, the determined XVave gave a strong show on the cle- fensive line and offense in this grudge game. The Rocks' tying points came in the last few minutes of the game when our substitutes were on the field. Although the Tidal XVave was weakened by the flu, they marched to a 26-6 victory over the Nloultrie Cenerals. The XVave began the game with a touchdown on the first play from the line of scrimmage. The YVavels secondary played most of the second half, holding the Generals scoreless until late in the fourth quarter. Victory was the foremost thought of every B. H. S. player as they invaded the Dust Bowl .of the Con- ference, james Island. XVinning this game meant Beaufort had a crack at the championship. The game got off to a slow start, but the battle ended 13-6, our favor. Ending the 1957 season, the Tidal XVave took on Bamburg on home ground for a battle long awaited by php Beaufort grid-stars. By beating the Bed Raiders 19-6, the Tidal XVave finished with 6 wins, 3 ties, and oss. The Montana Play-off System decided the winners of the Conference as Beaufort met NVade Hampton on neutral grounds at NYalterboro. A penalty in the closing minutes of the play-off staved our last chance for the Conference title. XVade Hampton T.D.- Scrambled Legs Touchdown Bound The beginning of the end

The 1957 Beaufort Tidal Wave football team ended the season with a record of six wins, one loss, and three ties. The loss was a 7-6 affair to VVade Hampton during the season, and in a con- ference playoff the Tidal Wave and Wade Hampton tied 6-6, but the Red Devils won on the Montana System. The game goes in the record books as a tie. This Beaufort team had no really large boys, but almost all of the starters were about the same size. Team speed was good and the team de- fense was exceptionally good. Only one team. Summerville. managed to gain as much as 100 yards on the ground. On the other hand, the Beaufort offense rolled up more than 100 yards rushing in every game except the first, a 0-0 tie with North Augusta. A strong mnning game was the feature of the VVave,s offense with passing used only sparingly. Doug Cappelmann and Butch Polk .led the way on the ground with Shorty McAlhaney and Ray Williams hitting a good percentage of the few passes they needed to throw. The forward wall, although not exceptionally large, was exceptionally fast, and downfield blocking was good. The ends were not great pass receivers but were good blockers and did a fine job on defense. Beaufortls football record for the last seven years now stands at 48 wins, 22 losses, and three ties with three conference championships. Dur- ing this seven-year period the Tidal XVave has never finished below second in its district or con- ference. joofdaf geauforf
