Track Team was short on experi- ence, but long on enthusiasm as they faced what promised to be rough competition in their '57 season. The Tidal Wave has chalked up an envia- ble record of 25 straight wins in regular season competition over the past 4 years. The Tidal Wave lads, without exception, were well-coached, strictly disciplined track men, hun- gry with intent on winning, and superbly con- ditioned both mentally and physically for the spring sport. The Wave began the season with a one-point victory over Summerville in a guadrangular track meet. Beaufort tallied 66 points to 65 for Sum- merville, 20 for Wade Hampton and 7 for St. Paul's. The strong Beaufort team tagged itself as a squad to watch in the Evening Post Relays, as they trampled Wade Hampton High School 95- 34. The Beaufort team swept all but 3 places in the 440, 220, shot put, discus, and broad jump. The Tidal Wave won all three relay races and managed to score points in each of the 15 events. Coach Shelton's young but maturing thin clads .SZ-.fe amlaiona The power-packed Tidal XVave tracksters chalk- ed up 111 points to swamp Wade Hampton which had 30, and St. Andrews with 15, to win the District 8, Class A title. The WVave racked up 13 1st places on the 15-event program to win easily. Only one mark was broken at the meet. Beaufort's Larry Rogers bettered the existing Class A broad jump mark as he leaped 20 ft. 5 inches to take that event. The Evening Post Relays was the longest two- day track meet in history. Beaufort's light cavalry severed the newspaper from its coveted bronze medals with alarming ease. The Wave forces notched five first places and four seconds to win going away. In the relays preliminaries five re- cords were set, three of these by Tidal VV ave per- formers. 100 yd Dash-Dan Upton 10.5, Low Hurdles-Butch Polk 22.7, Broad lump-Bill Elliott 20 ft. 592 in. In the finals, Dan Upton became the first boy in the two-year history of the Charleston Even- ing Post Relays to capture three 1st-place medals in individual competition. He raced to new re- cords in the 100 yd dash C10.3j and the 220 yd scored a whopping 106 points to 4731 for Moultrie X 1 dash f22.9j and missed tying the 440 yd record High and 15 3X4 for james Island as they racked gag: 'l by one tenth of a second.
