USS BEAUFORT (ATS-2) MISSIONS AND MILESTONES NAMED IN HONOR OF THE CITIES OF BEAUFORT, NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA, THE USS BEAUFORT IS THE SECOND OF A NEW CLASS OF RESCUE AND SALVAGE SHIPS TO BE COMMISSIONED INTO ACTIVE SERVICE IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY. SHE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THE FLEET WITH THE LATEST AND MOST ADVANCED SALVAGE DIVING CAPABILITIES. THE USS BEAUFORT IS HOMEPORTED IN PEARL HARBOR, HAWAII AND ASSIGNED DUTY WITH THE U.S. PACIFIC FLEET. BEAUFORT ' S PROPULSION, AUXIL- LIARY AND DECK MACHINERY IS LARGER, MORE POWERFUL, AND MORE SOPHISTICAT- ED THAN THAT PREVIOUSLY FOUND ON U.S. NAVY SALVAGE VESSELS. HER DIVING CAPABILITIES EXCEED THOSE OF OLDER SALVAGE SHIPS AND ARE COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF SUBMARINE RESCUE SHIPS. SHE HAS SELF TENSIONING TOWING WINCHES WITH 70-TON STATIC PULL CAPABILITY. HER FORWARD AND AFTER CRANES HAVE LIFTING CAPABILITIES OF 10 AND 20 TON RESPECTIVELY. SHE IS EQUIPPED WITH A BOW THRUSTER UNIT TO IMPROVE MANEUVERABILITY AT THE LOW SPEEDS NECESSI- TATED BY MANY SALVAGE OPERATIONS. HER BOW ROLLERS ENABLE BEAUFORT TO PROVIDE A 300-TON BALLAST TIDAL LIFT AND A 150-TON DYNAMIC LIFT. BEAUFORT HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO RECEIVE THE PORTABLE MARK 1 DEEP DIVING SYSTEM WHICH WILL SUPPORT DIVING OPERATIONS TO DEPTHS OF 300 FEET. THE DESIGN OF THE USS BEAUFORT REFLECTS THE NAVY ' S INCREASED EMPHASIS ON HABITABILITY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INDIVIDUAL. THE BERTHING SPACES ARE LARGER THAN THOSE OF OLDER SHIPS AND MUCH OF THE SHIP IS AIR CONDITIONED. THE GALLEY AND MESSING ACCOMMODATIONS ARE AMONG THE MOST MODERN IN THE NAVY AND CON- TAIN THE LATEST CONVENIENCES. THE USS BEAUFORT IS A SHIP OF NEW DESIGN, WITH A UNIQUE AND ALREADY PROUD HERITAGE. SEVEN YEARS OF PROVEN SERVICE AND AN EXTENSIVE REGULAR OVERHAUL HAVE PLACED BEAUFORT WELL AHEAD IN HER SALVAGE ROLE IN THE PACIFIC.
