USS BEAUFORT (ATS-2) MISSIONS AND MILESTONES NAMED IN HONOR OF THE CITIES OF BEAUFORT, NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA, THE USS BEAUFORT IS THE SECOND OF A NEW CLASS OF RESCUE AND SALVAGE SHIPS TO BE COMMISSIONED INTO ACTIVE SERVICE IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY. SHE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THE FLEET WITH THE LATEST AND MOST ADVANCED SALVAGE/DIVING CAPABILITIES THE USS BEAUFORT IS HOMEPORTED IN PEARL HARBOR, HAWAII AND ASSIGNED DUTY WITH THE U.S. PACIFIC FLEET. BEAUFORT ' S PROPULSION, AUXILIARY AND DECK MACHINERY IS LARGER, MORE POWERFUL AND MORE SOPHI.STICATEI) THAN THAT PREV10US1,Y FOUND ON I ' .S. NAVY SALVAGE VESSELS, HER DIVING CAI ' AHII.ITIES KXCEKI) PHOSK OF OLDER SAIAAGK SHIPS AND ARE COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF SL ' BMAHINE RESCUE SHIPS. SHE HAS SELF TENSIONING TOWINCi WINCHES WITH 70-TON STATIC PULL CAPABILITY, HER FORWARD AND AFTER DECK CRANP:S HAVE LIFTING CAPABILITIES OF ID AND 20 TONS RESPECTIVELY. SHE IS EQIIIPPED WITH A BOW THRUSTER UNIT TO IMPROVE MANEUVERABILITY AT THE LOW SPEEDS NECESSITATED BY MANY SALVAGE OPERATIONS, HER BOW ROLLERS ENABLE BEAUFORT TO PROVIDE A HOO-TON BALLAST/TIDAL LIP ' T AND A l. ' 50-TON DYNAMIC LIFT. BEAUFORT HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO RECEIVE THE PORTABLE MARK I DEEP DIVING SYSTEM WHICH WILL SUPPORT DIVING OPERATIONS TO DEPTHS OF 850 FEET. THE DESIGN OF THE USS BEAUFORT REFLECTS THE NAVY ' S INCREASED EMPHASIS ON HABITABILITY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INDIVIDUAL. THE BERTHING SPACES ARE LARGER THAN THOSE OF OLDER SHIPS AND MUCH OF THE SHIPS IS AIR-CONDITIONED. THE GALLEY AND MESSING ACCOMODATIONS ARE AMONG THE MOST MODERN IN THE NAVY AND CONTAIN THE LATEST CONVENIENCES. THE USS BEAUFORT IS A SHIP OF NEW DESIGN, WITH A UNIQUE AND ALREADY PROUD HERITAGE. FOUR YEARS OF PROVEN SERVICE AND AN EXTENSIVE REGULAR OVERHAUL HAVE PLACED THE USS BEAUFORT WELL AHEAD IN HER SALVAGE ROLE IN THE PACIFIC.
