Today's youth and older generations express themselves in many ways: riots, sit-ins, speeches, editorials, etc. More often than not the speeches and editorials are ignored and the protests and anti-establishment movements result in lawlessness and rash police action. Why can’t these protests and peaceful movements for liberal changes be understood by all generations? As editor I intend to keep a liberal mind concerning the contents of the annual, and I challenge you to examine the material accordingly. In former years I feel Bearden students have been less aware of current problems and situations in our country. However, this year there is a handful of students who are helping their fellow students to realize that there is a world beyond the Knoxville city limits. We are living in an economically impoverished area where funds are scarce for education. We may think this lack of educational resources is outweighed by the fact that Bearden is one of the highest-rated schools in Tennessee. But when our state has one of the poorest ratings in education in the nation, how do Bearden High School students compare with students from top-ranked states? Will you be able to enter the career of your choice? Yes. The opportunity for self-expression and higher education is available at Bearden if one chooses to become involved. This year the Class of '69 is fast becoming the most aware and most involved class Bearden High School has ever had. My role in this change consists of recording the separate stories of concern, involvement, and expression truthfully and completely. David Anderson, Editor Life at Bearden Takes Many Faces Echo Bearden Knoxville Table of Contents Activities ..................................... 11 Athletics ...................................... 63 Personalities....................................83 Advertising.................................... 161 1969 High School Tennessee I am youth and I am a paradox. I cloak my emotions in the garb of unconcern. If I seem indifferent, it is because I feel too deeply. If I seem boastful, it is to cover my shortcomings. My exuberance is a shield of my limitations. I am a youth and I long to be different, stronger, more honest, more feeling, more alive than other men. I am youth and I long to be a conformist ... to dress, act and talk like the crowd. I am a realist. Be honest with me; I can sense hypocrisy and I loathe it. I cannot con-, done a leader who does not know the way, show the way, go the way. I am an idealist. I will act on principle for its sake alone. I am a child. Sixteen does not make me too old to climb on my father's lap when my castles in the sky come tumbling down. I am an age of mountainous love and deep despair. I am unaware of any real indifference. The pain of all creatures is personal to me. I burn with a rising tide of fury at a restroom sign, 'White Only'. I feel needed and though the cynic says I am too precious a gift to waste on the young, who else would accept my turbulent, bittersweet, dreaming ways? Yes, I am youth and I am a paradox; a contradiction to myself; an enigma to others; and yet, I am the eternal hope of the world. I am the key to the future . . . cherish me! 4 A school lives on; but a school with spirit and pride prospers. Perhaps a stick represents an enthusiasm; but there is greater meaning. When we strive with our last ounce of courage and do our best, then no more can be asked of us and the fulfillment of life will be ours. 5 t I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed . . . that all men are created equal. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true. So let freedom ring. And when this happens, when we let it ring, we will speed that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: Free at last, free at last Thank God Almighty, we're free at last. Yes, it is we that will make this dream a reality. When we put aside our petty prejudices and trivial thoughts, perhaps the black man and the Indian will gain equal opportunities, and all men will have economic and social equality. Let us seek a newer world. 6 APPEAR fo «t ,tMBLlE.S 7 Cogitare est vivere Cicero To think is to live, said the grand orator, yet in the frenzied life at Bearden, in the course of early morning club meetings, themes for Mrs. Counts, chemistry tests, how many of us have the time to really think? Or to rephrase the question, how many of us have the time to really live? 8 We, as individuals, walk through the doors of this school and are molded into one body. Yet we remain individuals, comparing thoughts, ideas, experiences . . . and changing. We the students and teachers change, but the school is constant. Perhaps it seems ugly and impersonal to us when we first come, but as we work and play and grow here, we begin to cheer for its teams, to fight for its reputation, and to cry in its losses. When we walk through its doors for the last time, we look back upon it, for we have spent part of our lives here. The doors close, we are gone, but the impressions we have left will never disappear. Spirit reached an all-time high at BHS this year. There is spirit in each individual to support various teams and clubs. There is spirit to help others. There is spirit to let others know yours is the best class . There is spirit to achieve a closer faculty-student relationship. There is spirit to make suggestions and compromises. Probably most important, however, there is spirit to better oneself through all phases of high school life. 9 sru o “ 0 0 '-bJU4 1 Oft JLuJ, u -M ’ 0 fuJUl 1 t C uD pen u-mJlK 4 cud • k 4 w£ Kj o£ 4ome ciUJUU fe cXHc0 •xu-f uu . aV $ With guidance, whatever a student experiences is educational. ■H M n Activities A highlight of every Bearden High school year is the Junior-Senior Prom. The Class of ’69 raised an unsurpassed sum of money from the sale of candy and calendars to bring the Esquires” to the prom. By the work of Junior Class officers, committees, sponsors, and parents, An Evening in Venice proved to be truly magnificent. Mrs. Luton Well, how would you hang pigeons from the ceiling? 12 Junior girls display their unique ability to make gondolas. Standing room only Each year as prom time rolls around, the Junior Class selects five girls who they believe deserve the honor of becoming Prom Queen. Last year the Prom Court consisted of Janella Pennington, Nancy Barrow, Peggy Sexton, and Sue Huskisson. The evening was made complete by the crowning of DiAnne Young. Nothing now is left but Majestic Memory Longfellow 13 Graduation 1968 The 1969 graduation marks the close of the 1967-68 school year. With the coming of September, Bearden High School rejuvenates with an even larger freshman class and new leadership from the Class of '69. Registration 14 French Contest Winners A proud school is one whose students take pride in what they do. Whether it is a homeroom which worked for the school, a pair of girls who gained national honors in French achievement, seven Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, or recognition for superior work in the fine arts, the students deserve a great deal of credit and the school, through them, rises to fame. 15 Mrs. Williams Homeroom of the Year 16 Awards Day Winners, Juniors and Seniors Mrs. Aslinger Teacher of the Year Miss and Mr. Freshman Deborah Bush and Alan Robertson Art, Chorus, Language, Home Economics, and Highest Sophomore Average Awards. The Ad Managers, Karen Drew and Betsy Gouffon, are responsible for managing and recording the sales of ads . Very few people realize what it takes to publish an annual. There are two main jobs over the course of the year; publishing the annual and financing the printing and the photography. Composing the annual is the creative side of the staff's work. Each page must be designed and drawn with patience and accuracy or it takes extra production time and money to publish the page. Each annual actually costs more than five dollars to print. For this reason, the staff must raise approximately one thousand dollars from ads and patrons. Since the annual must be completed in half a year, it can easily be seen that the first semester is a hectic one. 53 David Anderson, Editor Math Club The purpose of the Math Club is to increase knowledge and interest in the various fields of mathematics . To fulfill this purpose, the Math Club invites speakers throughout the year to lecture on certain areas of math. Robert cook exhibits leadership by example. The team swept to eight wins and a tie in ten games, losing only to Oak Ridge. As a result of this fine record, they were invited to play in the Optimist Bowl against Doyle High School. Both Danny Moon and Tommy Hammett made various All-State teams. Captain Jim Anker, Len Pilkington, and Tim Townes also became well-known around the area for their exceptional play.
