As a result of hard work in practice and in games, the Marlin bas- ketball team earned the right to compete in the Eastern District tournament. This was the first year Bayside was eligible for this competition. Six veterans, including Junior standouts Phil Law- son and Richard Poole, rcjurned to the court this year. The team was predominantly Juniors, but Sen- ior co-captains Petie Withers and Tom Solomon pro- vided the leadership. Marlin determination triumphed early in the sea- son. After dropping the season opener to Cox, the Marlins rebounded by beating Kempsville 83-59. Princess Anne beat Bayside, but was faced with stubborn opposition throughout the game. Close games were characteristic of the season. ln its first encounter with Bayside, First Colonial squeezed past the Mighty Big Red by the narrow margin of 3 points. In defeating Kellam 82-64, Bay- side had five players scoring double figures, led by Petie Withers U9 pointsl, Phil Lawson fl7i, and Bruce Humphries ULU. I 1 77
