Petree Kicks Area's First Field Goal The Homecoming game was characteristic of many Marlin contests in that the team chalked up another victory. The scoreless first half was a result of a strong Kellam ground defense and a mighty Marlin pass defense. Tom Chipok's 40-yard bomb to Eddie McCullough broke the deadlock in the third quarter. Bayside scored again when defensive guard Gene Limbaugh recovered a Kellam fumble and dashed ll yards to paydirt, shutting out the Knights l4-O. Billy Petree's toe spelled the difference between victory and deadlock when the unbeaten Marlins clashed with the Hornets of Deep Creek. The end of the half found the Marlins on top 7-6. Lance Platz's 35-yard interception-run set up Bayside's second score early in the fourth quarter. Deep Creek then tied the game and left the Marlins 58 seconds to do or die. Billy Petree kicked the ball between the uprights as time ran out. The first field goal of the Tidewater scholastic season secured a T7-T4 victory for the Marlins. Bayside, trying to crack Maury's stranglehold on the state title, lost in a valiant effort 42-13. Bayside breezed to a touchdown on its first series of downs, then picked up another when John .lelley recovered a fumble on the Commodore IO. However, the tide changedlin the second half. Bayside could do little to stop the Maury onslaught. g The game with Lake Taylor did nothing to the Marlin spirit despite Bayside's loss. Down T3-0 after one quarter of play, Bayside picked up 2 touch- downs in the second and third quarters, but failed to convert each time.
