FOB the fifth time in l1er century of service, the hallowed sod of Baylor echoed the thunder el'LA'ro of distant cannon, beckoning another generation of gallant youths to lay aside the cap and gown for the khaki and the gun. Five times the four horsemen of the Apocalypse-War, Famine, Fire and Pestilence- have ridden across the ravaged earth and cast their eerie shadows over the spires of Baylor. Successively, the Mexican, Civil and Spanish-American wars prepared the way for the war to end wars in 1918, and now the global conflict which has been called VVorld VVar ll. Now, as then, the gallant sons of Baylor, like those of Oxford: H. . . left the peaceful river, The cricket field, the quad, The shaven lawns of Oxford, To seek a bloody sod- They gave their merry youth away For country and for God. While the slender, adventurous vanguard held forth in Europels lead-ridden skies, chal- lenged watery graves on the seven seas or crouched in tl1e foxholes of Bataan and North Africa, there were those who remained behind-who also served. These other sons of Baylor-the Army, Navy and Marine reservists-are destined to fill the posts of fallen Baylor men. ln wind-swept cockpits, upon the bridges of fresh-launched warships, in the growing armada of strength which rallies to hurl back the forces of darkness, they will soon serve-and perhaps die.
